Earthquakes often occur anytime near the Philippines in the Pacific coast, where a tectonic

subduction zone is located. And is known to be the second deepest ocean trench in the world

known as the Philippine Deep or the Philippine Trench. A strong magnitude 6.0 earthquake

occurred in Luzon, Philippines on May 5, 2018. Locals had been warned to the aftershocks as it

was reported as a ‘tectonic’ quake. Thankfully there was no reports of casualties or damage

from the earthquake which hit a depth of 18 miles on the island of Catanduanes. Earthquakes

occur regularly in the Philippines greater than a magnitude of 2.5 in which most people are

completely unaware of them. Between 2008 to 2015 only three earthquakes were slightly felt

due to the result from seismic activity with no greater magnitude of 6.0. The last destructive

quake occurred on October 15,2013 in the west coast of Bohol Island. The earthquake was

measured as a 7.2 magnitude that caused damage throughout the island and building structure

that resulted in 222 fatalities. None of the earthquakes resulted in a tsunami as they are

extremely rare.
