The Road
McCarthy Cormac

What would you do if you were in a post-apocalyptic world and you had to take care of
your child? Resources are null, hunger has made humans become cannibals and you only
have a couple of bullets. The anguish, the despair, the fear, the helplessness, all these
emotions are transmitted by the author in this book and makes the reader run out of
breath. McCarthy instead sounds the limits of imaginable love and despair between a
diligent father and his timid young son, "each other's world entire”. What choice would you
make? Kill your child or you teach all to learn to survive in a world where hope no longer
exists.

It’s the first McCarthy´s novel that I have read and I enjoyed it more than I expected.
Though, it is not something to pick up for light entertainment. Cormac McCarthy sets this
novel in a post-apocalyptic smudgy, grey sky, in the world where the whole ground is
covered with ash, a world in which all animals, birds and plants are extinct. The only
remaining is misery, agony and starvation. The main focus of the novel is not the
apocalypse that is central to the novel, but the relationship between father and son.
McCarthy uses this strongest of relationships to ponder some important questions about
humanity. The vision of world after a global disaster is the background for the relationship
of an unnamed boy and his father. Our two main characters, the man and his son, have
chosen to journey on without the knowledge of where their next meal will come from,
always paranoid of the constant threat of what they may encounter on The Road. Although
the possibility that they reach a place where life is still for living is minimal, the two have no
more possibilities. The only two things they still possess are affection and hope. There are,
of course, survivors, and that is where the real fear comes in. Here we see the traditional
transmuting of people who in utterly ultimate situation become monstrous cannibals.

Throughout the novel there is a strong focus on the bond between father and son. The
man sees his son as the only remaining sign of God's existence; without his son, the man
has no hope for the future. Their mutual desires to live and die depend solely on one
another. Another theme that emerges at the start of the story is that of frames, or skeletal
shapes. In the city and along the road, all that the father and boy see are the shapes of the
old world. They see the frames of cars, barns, and houses, and they see the physical
remains of dried and decaying human bodies. At the end of the story you can see a shift in
roles between the boy and the father. It’s now the boy who carries the revolver and leaves
in search of food. The man knows that it's time for the boy to go ahead of him, to be a part
of a future that doesn't involve him.

About Characters:

The father, goes unnamed throughout the story; He is the boy's father, his papa,
and believes that he has been entrusted by God to keep the boy safe and to protect him
from harm and the evils in the world — even if that means killing him before the bad guys
can get to him. The connection that the man feels with his son is sacred, almost holy, and
throughout the novel the man makes great sacrifices to allow his son to live on and have a
future. He shows his son how to carry the fire, first with his help, and then, later, without
him.
The son, unnamed too, is the only source of light in his father's life. Similarly, the
man is all that the boy has, and the boy doesn't want to live unless his father remains with
him. The boy is strong and resilient, but also sensitive and compassionate. It is the boy
who is able to get the man to show kindness to others on the road, however begrudgingly
such kindness is given. One of the boy's top priorities is to be a good guy.
