THE VIRGIN OF FATIMA
The Virgin of Fatima - formally
Our Lady of the Rosary of
Fatima - is an advocation with
which the Virgin Mary is
venerated in Catholicism. In the
same vein as other Marian
apparitions, it had its origin in
the testimonies of three
pastors, called Lucía dos Santos,
Jacinta and Francisco Marto.
FIRST PERIOD: APARITIONS OF
THE ANGEL (1916)
According to the testimony of its
protagonists, in 1916, three
children, witnessed in 1916 an
angelic presence while
shepherding their sheep, twice in
the cave Loca do Cabeço, in
Valinhos, and another in Pozo del
Arneiro, in Lucia's house, in
Aljustrel. This Angel of Portugal, or
Angel of Peace, as they called him,
had taught them to pray for the
conversion of sinners, had advised
them how to practice daily
sacrifice and adoration of God
through the Eucharist.
SECOND PERIOD:
APPARITIONS OF THE
VIRGIN MARY (1917
On Sunday, May 13, 1917, the
three children went to graze
their sheep as usual, to a place
known as Cova da Iria, near
their hometown of Fatima in
Portugal. Lucia described having
seen, on an oak tree, a woman
"brighter than the sun", dressed
in white, with a mantle with
gold edges and a rosary in her
hands, who asked them to
return the same day and at the
same time for five consecutive
months, entrusting them with
the recitation of the rosary.
