CAD DESIGN PROJECT

MINI CONSTRUCTION LIFT

BACKGROUND

Figure 1 shows a Mini construction lift. The lift will raise building materials from
ground level to any height up to 40.0 ft (12.2 m). The lift will be at the top of a rigid
scafold that is not a part of the design project. It will raise a load of up to 500 lb
(2.22 kN) at the rate of 1.0 ft/s (0.30 m/s). The load will be on a pallet, 3.0 ft by 4.0
ft (0.91 m X 1.22 m). At the top ofthe lift, means must be provided to bring the load
onto a platform that supports the lift.

SCOPE OF WORKS

Use your Engineering knowledge and CAD skill, you have to solve these tasks:

1. Choose only one component from the crane (i.e winch shaft, motor coupling,
supporting structural etc) and develope a VBA programming that will model
this part. The programming must allow the user to set the parameters.

2. You have to carry a FEA analysis only on the structural part of the crane.

PROJECT METHODOLOGY/REPORT

1. Introduction and Objective - 10 %

2. Research on crane design & Standard Practice/Journal/Catalog/ Crane Design
Standard - 10 %
3. Programming: discuss the algorithm and focuses on the design intent - 20 %
4. FEA method and result: On the FEA model, focuses on the reasoning behind
setting the constraint of the model. On the result focuses on how to interpret
the FEA result for design purposes. - 20 %
5. Discussion and Conclusion - 20%
6. Report Writing Format must follow Standard UGP Writing Format - 10%
7. Engineering drawing - Orthographic and Isometric drawing are required on
the selected part only- 10%

DELIVERABLE

Design details should include, but are not limited to, the following:

(a) Specify material type for all components. Material property data (i.e. elas-
tic modulus, yield strength, ultimate strength, etc.) should be obtained from
appropriate tables.
(b) Structural members should be sized to support the specified load with a
safety factor ranging from 2.0 to 4.0. Factors lower than 2.0 are unsafe,
and factors higher than 4.0 are not optimized.
(h) Create ortographic and isometric drawings of the crane (All drawings should
be generated with a computer).
(i) [IMPORTANT]: All softcopy parts model and report must be submitted ON-
LINE (SolidWorks part and assembly files, Word documents or PDF) to http:/
/www.fkm.utm.my/~khairul/SKMM4513.html and the hardcopy of the
report must be PRINTED and submitted before due date stated.

PROJECT SUBMISSION

15 DISEMBER 2017
LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of this project, students are expected to be able to:

1. Generate designs using modern computer-aided design tools;

2. Predict and evaluate the mechanical performance of their design using a range
of computer-aided tools to compute geometric characteristics, stress and de-
flection properties of the rigid body systems;
3. Show the ability within the context of the subject areas, to formulate and solve
basic design problems;
4. Critically evaluate the sensibility of design outcomes;
5. Present design outcomes both written and orally in a professional manner;
6. Demonstrate the ability to work both autonomously and as a member of a
design team;
7. Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the role of computer-aided design.

REPORT FORMAT

The report should begin with a main page which includes the following:

a) The project TITLE, the course SECTION and group NUMBER, your group
member’s NAME and CLASSID, LECTURER, and the DATE.
b) A team PHOTO with the NAME and EMAIL for each of group members.
c) An abstract for the report (less than 150 words).
d) A Table of Contents with sections 1 through 9.
