SOLUTION 3 – CIRCUIT ANALYSIS
Given the figure below, what is the line voltage , ? Assume a balanced 3 phase load.

The first step is to find the current at AN. This is possible because you know both the voltage
drop and the impedance between A and N.

120 120
22.3∠ 21.8°
5 2 5.39∠21.8°

Since the circuit is wye configured, the phase current is equal to the line current. Then you can
use line current to find the voltage drop due to Z and Z_ph_AN. The impedances can be added
since they are in series.

22.3∠ 21.8° ∗ 5 2 0.5 0.1

22.3∠ 21.8° ∗ 5.5 2.1 22.3∠ 21.8° ∗ 5.89∠20.9°

131.4∠ .9°

This voltage drop is equal to the phase voltage. In order to get the line to line voltage, you need
to multiply this term by the root 3 term and account for the 30 degree phase shift.

, √3 ∗ 131.4∠ 30 .9° 227.6∠29.1°

The correct answer is most nearly, (C) 228 V.

SOLUTION 23 – ROTATING MACHINES
A 3 phase, 60 HZ, 480 V, 16-pole induction motor has a slip of 5%. If the voltage supplied to
the motor is reduced to 400 V, then what will be the actual motor speed? Assume the change in
motor slip is negligible.

First calculate the synchronous speed.

120 ∗ 60

120 ∗ 60
450
16

Next use the slip to calculate the actual speed. In a practical application, the reduction in
voltage will cause the slip % to decrease as well. However, for this problem, you can assume
the slip % remains the same.

1 ∗

1 .05 ∗ 450 428

The reduction in voltage will not affect the motor speed. The motor speed is only affected by
the frequency of the power.

The correct answer is most nearly, (C) 428 RPM.

QUESTION 40 – TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION
The secondary of a three phase, delta-wye transformer is being converted from an ungrounded
system to an intentionally grounded neutral system. A low-resistance grounding system will be
used. In which of the fault conditions, will the fault current most likely be increased? Assume
the location of the fault is the same in these two conditions: (1) condition prior to grounding and
(2) condition after grounding.

(A) Phase to Phase fault.

(B) Phase to ground fault.

(C) Three phase fault.

(D) None of the above.

SOLUTION 40 – TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION
The secondary of a three phase, delta-wye transformer is being converted from an ungrounded
system to an intentionally grounded neutral system. A low-resistance grounding system will be
used. In which of the fault conditions, will the fault current most likely be increased? Assume
the location of the fault is the same in these two conditions: (1) condition prior to grounding and
(2) condition after grounding.

(A) Phase to Phase fault.

(B) Phase to ground fault.

(C) Three phase fault.

(D) None of the above.

The fault current will be increased in (B) Phase to ground fault. In an ungrounded system the
fault current will be close to zero, since there is no return path. In a grounded system, the fault
current will travel from the phase and through the grounding system back to the source, which
will cause an increase in fault current. The other faults, phase to phase and three phase fault
will not change whether the system is grounded or not grounded.

The correct answer is (B).

QUESTION 54 - PROTECTION
If a phase A to phase B fault occurs at Bus 2, what will be the short circuit current in phase A at
Bus 2? Assume the positive and negative sequence impedances are equal for all components.

Assume a base of 1 MVA and 13.8 KV.

Since the generator and transformer have the same power values, the impedances are on the
same power base and the same voltage base.

0.15

0.08

Now find the base current on the 1 KV side.

1 ∗ 1,000
577.4
√3 ∗ 1

Next find the per unit current by dividing the per unit voltage by the sum of the per unit
impedances, since all the impedances are in series from the power source to the fault location.
Also since the base voltage is 13.8 KV and the actual voltage is 13.8 KV, then the per unit
voltage is 1.0.Remember you also need to add the negative sequence impedances which are
the same as the positive sequence impedances.
