Characteristics of Philippine Contemporary Arts (by classification)

1. Dominant/ Mainstream (foreign, influenced, Industry-driven, technology assisted, oriented for


mass-consumption)- ex. Ogie alcasid, Sarah Geronimo, etc.

2. Alternative ( usually social realist and / or advocacy oriented) Individuals (ex . Joey Ayala, Grace
Nono, Kidlat tahimik, etc.) Artist Groups / Collectives (practices are collaborative and interdisciplinary)
ex. 998 COLLABoratory. Ugatlahi Artist Colective, Sipat Lawin Ensemble, Neo- Agono Artists Collective,
Anino Shadowplay Collective, gerilya, Pinikpikan, etc.)

3. Traditional Indigenous( preserves local tradition ) ex. GAMABA awardees – Samaon Sulairnan, Lang
Dulay, etc.

Other Characteristics of Contemporary Art

1. Contemporary arts mirror contemporary culture and society, offering teachers, students, and
general audiences a rich resource through which consider current ideas and rethink familiar.

2. The work of contemporary artists is a dynamic combination of materials, methods, concepts,


and subjects that challenges traditional boundaries and defy easy definition.

3. Contemporary art reflects a wide range of materials, media, and technologies, as well as
opportunities to consider what art is and how it is defined. Artists today explore ideas, concepts,
questions, and practices that examine the past, describe the present, and imagine the future.

What is the difference between HUMANITIES and SCIENCE?

 Refers to the study of the human experience- how people process and record their
thoughts, beliefs, and longings
 Includes philosophy, history literature, art, music, and language as their modes of
expression
 Deals with the expression of the internal world of a person, a world where everything is
subjective. This internal world includes person’s emotions, dreams, and aspirations.

HUMANITIES SCIENCE
- Not accurate/structured - Precise structured
-Subjective( expressing personal views and - Objective
opinions) -Can be measured easy to grade
-More difficult to measure

 Artists imagine ways to make life delightful and pleasing

 CONTEMPORARY ART- is the art that springs out of the present-day events and passion of
the society

CONTEMPORARY ART is produced by the 21’st century artists living in the postmodern age.

> Its functions are culturally diverse and technology oriented

>provides instances for people to reflect and respond to contemporary social concerns and issues
pertinent to themselves and to the world

>combination of mixed styles, materials, techniques, and concepts that challenges tradition

>gone into mainstream and communities

> become collaborative process and the audience plays an active role in reacting and constructing
meaning about the work of art
Contemporary works of art- are the means through which the artists of today communicate their
sentiments

 The history of art is… Modern art emerged in the late 1800’s and continued to grow for
more or less a century then waned in the middle to late 20th century – postmodern came to
light ( gave birth the contemporary art that exists today)
 The difference is…Modern art developed styles and techniques while Contemporary art
refers to the art of the present time.
 The combination is.. Modern art and contemporary art use modern issues for their art
works, bit contemporary art is more socially conscious (e.g. feminism, globalization,
emigration, and environmental concerns ) and never ending originally.
