your whole life under the burden of racism. Racism is the biggest blot to the mankind. It should be
eradicated then and there itself before it expands to the global level. It is one of the unaccepted
behavior throughout the world And Nelson Mandela determined to get rid of the racism from his
country and the world. He spent his whole life for this purpose.

“Mr. Mandela has spent 67 years making the world a better place. We’re asking you for 67
minutes.”

This is what Nelson Mandela has shown to the whole world by eradicating apartheid in South Africa
which once use to be seemed impossible. In those days South Africa was going through a lot of
racism and many other problems.

Mandela Day is an annual international day in honor of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each year on 18
July, Mandela’s birthday. On His 90th birthday celebration in London’s Hyde Park in 2008, he said: “It
is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now.” Since then it was officially
declared by the United Nation to celebrate the day 18 July as International Mandela Day to show the
world the contribution he made to the culture of peace and freedom. This day is also observed as
the public holiday in South Africa. The celebration of Mandela Day aims to serve as a global call to
action for people to “recognize their individual power to make an imprint and help change the
world around them for the better”, as said the Nelson Mandela Foundation. It is celebrated all over
the globe by dedicating 67 minutes of their time to perform acts of kindness for others. Volunteers
carry out a wide variety of tasks and activities like doing good to the mankind, feeding the poor and
cleaning schools etc. The ideas and importance behind this are to encourage people to help others in
any kind of way possible.

The message Mandela Day campaign is:

“Nelson Mandela has fought for social justice for 67 years. We’re asking you to start with 67
minutes.” and “We would be honored if such a day can serve to bring together people
around the world to fight poverty and promote peace, reconciliation and cultural diversity.”

So on this occasion, let’s know more about Nelson Mandela.

Early Age of Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela is one of the famous personality not only known in South Africa but also in the
whole world, this was because of his life struggle against apartheid. Rolihlahla Mandela was born on
the 18th day of July in the year 1918 and was named Nelson after his teacher in his school days.
Mandela grew up in a joint family and later his father died when he was just 9 years old.

Apartheid Era and Nelson Mandela’s Struggle

There was a time when all the facilities were given according to the color of the humans. The whites
had the better facilities whereas the black had the poor facilities. This type of racism was seen all
over the world but the condition in the South Africa was the worst. The South Africas population
consisted more of Blacks than the whites. While the whole countries economy was fully depended
on the Blacks and still the Whites used to get all the major facilities.

In 1948 National party made the rule that blacks and whites will live in different places, there was
racism spread everywhere. Mandela didn’t like this, so he raised his voice against the discrimination
and racism.

It is truly said that “Good always triumphs over the evil”, this is what Nelson Mandela proved. He
struggled a lot for removing the racism from his country. He made sure that everybody gets the
equal rights whether he is white or black.

For this change he suffered a lot, he even went to the jail for almost 28 years, because he disobeyed
the government laws of racism that time. He was the strict follower of Mohandas Karamchand
Gandhi’s and his weapon of Non-Violence. He spent all his 28 years in jail. Later when the South
Africas government changed F. W Clarke became the president of South Africa, who then gave bail
to the Nelson and his followers on 1st February 1990.

Life of Mandela After Jail & His Achievements

After coming out of the jail he thought of joining politics when the blacks were also allowed to stand
for the elections so he joined African National Congress and won the elections with the large
number. And on April 27th, 1994, he was elected as the first apartheid President of South Africa.

Nelson’s bravery was known to the whole world. For this bravery, he was also awarded as the Bharat
Ratna in 1990 from India, which is one of the biggest awards. Later he was also awarded the Nobel
Prize for Peace in 1993 and also received 250 other honours.

Unfortunately, Mr. Mandela has passed away on 5th of December,2013. He was a courageous and
uncompromising hero. Mandela was a man of principles, strength, integrity, and inspiration. To
honor his selfless contribution to the society a song was made and dedicated to him on his 70th
birthday named “Mandela song” by the popular band Simple Minds which was loved all over the
world.

Conclusion

Nelson Mandela was the hero, he always inspired us he showed us that nothing is impossible in this
world. He was a brave world leader, who fought for equal rights even when no one else would not
only in South Africa but in the whole globe.

Tips for Speech on International Mandela Day 2017

1. Never mug up the speech script as it is. That sounds like a robot, your audience will not
connect with it.
2. Rather than reciting the complete script, note down only important bullet points and speak
from your heart. When you speak from the heart you might fumble once or twice but it
connects with your audience. We are humans after all we all make mistakes.
3. Rather than words focus more on the emotions behind the word.
4. If you are confident enough try to be interactive with your listeners. Ask them questions.
5. If you are speaking in public for the first time then you better try a speech in front of
parents, siblings or friends. Ask them feedback and revisit the script. Or else at least try
speech in front of the mirror.

Competitions:

Competition is the whetstone of talent.

-- Proverb

Of all human powers operating on the affairs of mankind, none is greater than that of competition.
-- Henry Clay

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.

-- Muhammad Ali

It’s the competition

And you’ve already won
The competition lasts but moments
Though the training’s taken years
It wasn’t the winning alone
That was worth the work and tears
The applause will be forgotten
The prize will be misplaced
But the long hard hours of practice
Will never be a waste
For in trying to win you build a skill
You learn that winning depends on will
You never grow by how much you win
You only grow by how much you put in
So any challenge you’ve just begun
Put forth your best effort.
