Nearly 75 percent of child safety seats aren’t used properly … Is yours?
CARSON CITY — Carson City Hospi-
tal (CCH) is focusing on Child Passenger
Safety Week Sept. 19-25. Year-round, the
hospital offers trained technicians on staff
to instruct parents on the proper way to
install a car seat.
“Nearly 75 percent of child safety
seats aren’t used properly,” said Daniyel
McAlvey, CCH Service Excellence Manag-
er and a certified Child Passenger Safety
technician. “That’s why we offer this ser-
vice to our patients and the community.
We want to be sure that every child seat
is installed securely and properly, so that
our children are safe and protected when
riding in a vehicle.”
McAlvey and her co-worker, CCH O.B.
Department Manager Shelly Betancourt,
successfully completed all of the require-
ments for the technician certification
as part of the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (NHTSA) Nation-
al Standardized Child Passenger Safety
Training program. They attended a week-
long course that included skill-testing ex-
ercises and a series of tests.
“The curriculum was framed with a
‘Learn, Practice, Explain’ paradigm, so
that we are now able to explain installa-
tion procedures to parents and caregivers,
and empower them to confidently install
and re-install child restraints on their own
after we’ve assisted them,” said McAlvey.
According to the U.S. Department of
Transportation’s NHTSA research, 8,959
lives have been saved from 1975 to 2008
by the proper use of child restraints. In
2008 – among children under age 5 in
passenger vehicles – an estimated 244
lives were saved by child restraint use
(child safety seats and adult seat belts).
Research shows that child restraints pro-
vide the best protection for all children up
to age 8.

Michigan and, the Michigan De-
partment of Agriculture (MDA)
is encouraging parents to follow
some basic food safety guidelines
when packing their child’s lunch
ensuring a foodborne illness does
not make its way into a child’s
lunchbox.
How to make sure your lunch
is safe:
n Put something cold in the
lunch box. A fun trick is to freeze
a juice box overnight and put it

success. They urge any one approached by a volun-
teer for a donation to give generously.

$1.7 Million in Federal Aid a ‘Big Boost’ for Grant High School
GRANT – When Grant schools Su-
perintendent Scott Bogner applied for
a federal school improvement grant in
August, he kept his fingers crossed. “We
were under the impression that every
school that applied would receive mon-
ey,” he said, “but you never know.” As it
turned out, Grant’s application was one
of just 28 schools in Michigan to receive
the federal aid designed to boost student
achievement. Eighty-four schools ap-
plied.
The school district will receive $1.7
million spread over three years to help its
high school students upgrade their math
and English skills. “This is a big boost
for our high school, really for our whole
school community,” Bogner said. “We
see this as an opportunity to do things we
knew we were going to do anyway. Now
we have the financial resources.”.
To qualify for a grant, schools had
to be included in a Persistently Lowest
Achieving Schools list released by the
state in June. Michigan’s list was based
on reading and math testing data from
2007-2009. While Grant High School’s
Merit Exam scores were comparable to
other area high schools and were “higher
than many other schools in the state,”
Bogner said the school was placed on
the list because of a modest decline in
its scores. “We would have preferred not
to have been on the state’s list,” Bogner
said. “But we’re looking at this as a posi-
tive, as an opportunity to step up and
do more for our students.” A later, sec-
ond, state list that examined additional
performance measures did not include
Grant High School.
School staff has already begun work
on the reforms outlined in the district’s
school improvement plan, which took
“hundreds of hours” to prepare, states
Bogner. Preparing the plan involved the
efforts of Grant school officials and staff
from the Newaygo County Regional Edu-
cational Services Agency in Fremont.
Grant chose a “transformational
model” of improvement, one of four
choices allowed under federal guide-
lines. It requires replacing the school
principal, implementing comprehensive
instruction reform, and extending learn-
ing and teacher planning time. Because
current high school Principal Dan Simon
was hired before the start of last school
year, he does not have to be replaced,
Bogner noted.
Some of the federal money will be
used to help English and math teachers
develop curriculum and assess student
performance. Some of the aid could be
used on before- and after-school learn-
ing opportunities.
Next school year, the high school will
offer a “freshmen academy” for at-risk
students. “We’re finding that our fresh-
men are the ones who are struggling the
most,” Bogner said.
As programs are put in place, school
administrators will continue to look at
other performance initiatives for the
high school. “Everything we do must be
educationally viable and sustainable,” he
said.
Progress on the school’s improve-
ments will be monitored by the state on a
regular basis, Bogner said.
The school board will host a com-
munity forum on Sept. 29 for parents
and area residents to learn more about
the district’s plans to improve the high
school, he said. The forum will begin at 7
p.m. in the middle school cafeteria.
“We are up to this challenge,” Bogner
said. “The school board and our staff are
committed to improving the high school
and, in fact, all of our schools.”
“It’s important to us that these kids
have every opportunity that’s coming to
them.”

Here are the NHTSA’s 4 Steps for
Kids guidelines that determine which
restraint system is best suited to pro-
tect children based on age and size:
