Recycling and Reducing Waste

We know this is important to our customers, to us and for our planet. In fact, we get more customer
comments about recycling than any other environmental issue - especially when it comes to our
cups.

By 2015 we plan to have recycling available in all of our stores where we control waste collection
and serve 25% of beverages in reusable cups.

Environmental Stewardship
In the last few years, environment has emerged as a one of the most talked topic. Starbucks realized
the value and took lot of initiatives to reduce the waste generated by stores especially when it comes
to recycling. Few of them are in:

1. Energy Conservation: Starbucks has installed energy management system to optimize the
heating and cooling in approximately 4000 stores. Starbucks is also investing in the
renewable energy, as per the stats, Starbucks remained one of the Environmental Protection
Agency’s top ten purchasers of renewable energy in the U.S.
2. Recycling and Reducing Waste: Starbucks is committed to reducing the waste generated by
its store. From 2015, recycling is available at all stores, where Starbucks control waste
collection and also serves 25 percent of beverages in reusable cups

3. Water: Starbucks has implemented alternatives like mechanical dishwashers to clean

utensils that will reduce the water usage across the world.

4. Green Building: Starbucks is using US Green Building Council’s LEED® certification

programme as a benchmark for success. Few of initiatives are conserving energy by
allowing AC stores to reach 24°C instead of 22°C on warm days, using high-blast nozzles to
clean jugs helping in reducing the water usage,

5. Climate Change
