Part I

New Classmates

Joshua watched his new classmates with unabashed curiosity. They were a brother and a sister, refugees from
a neighboring country. Refugees had been coming to Joshua’s country over the previous six months. However,
Joshua lived far in the interior of his country and Jonathan and Jenna, the brother and sister, were the first
refugees to come to his school.

The two seemed to still be getting used to their first week at Joshua’s school. Though Joshua and most of his
classmates did not feel cold, Jonathan and Jenna were bundled up in coats and scarves. They weren’t accustomed
to the cool weather because they were from a warm, coastal region. Also, they seemed to have a little trouble
understanding everything the teacher and other students said. Jonathan and Jenna were bilingual but the primary
language of their country was different than the language most people spoke in Joshua’s country. Joshua was sure
they were not dunces but he wondered how hard it would be for them to catch up on all the work the class had
been doing during the semester. As Joshua thought about his new classmates, he decided that he would offer to
help them in any way possible. They were in a new country and at a school simply because their country was having
political difficulties. He thought about how he would feel if he and his family had to leave home for political reasons.
