Ulothrix

Taxonomy

Scientific classification

(unranked): Viridiplantae

Division: Chlorophyta

Class: Ulvophyceae

Order: Ulotrichales

Family: Ulotrichaceae

Genus: Ulothrix

Species Ulothrix Moniliformis

Description

Filamentous , unbrancged, unseriate filaments, they are cylindrical in shape.

Ecological importance

Algae are some of the most primitive life forms found on Earth and have been consumed as
food and medicine for centuries. Human consumption of the blue-green algae called
spirulina actually goes back to the Aztec civilization of the 14th century, and this type,
including spirulina and chlorella, is the edible variety most commonly used in supplements.
In fact, algae benefits are so pronounced — due to their high concentrations of vitamins,
minerals, antioxidants and proteins — that they are commonly referred to as superfoods.
There are actually several more varieties, which have overlapping as well as some
differentiating health benefits.

Significance to human

Ulothrix has been used to for weight loss, cancer, fibromyalgia, arthritis, stress, heart
disease, high cholesterol and an array of other serious health conditions.

Polisiphonia

taxonomy

Scientific classification

(unranked): Archaeplastida

Division: Rhodophyta

Class: Florideophyceae

Order: Ceramiales

Family: Rhodomelaceae

Genus: Polysiphonia

Species: p.breviarticulata

Description

Well branched, reach upto 30 cm, attached through rhizoids or haptors

Ecological importance

Eat as food in coastal areas , source of protein, vitamin, trace elements, show mutalism with
famous fish

Significance to human

Inhibit the growth of harmful algae that pollutes water

Euglena

Taxonomy

Scientific classification

Domain: Eukaryota

(unranked): Excavata

Division: Euglenozoa

Class: Euglenoidea

Order: Euglenales

Family: Euglenaceae

Genus: Euglena

Species: euglena sanguine

Description

Red in color due to presence of astaxanthin. The pigment is used to protect chloroplasts
from too intense light , out as the light level change , the cells can take green color as the
red pigment is move to centre of the cell.

Ecological importance

To test the water toxicity in pollutants and microorganisms

Significance to human
It used as an bio indicator

Spirulina

Taxonomy

Scientific classification

Domain: Bacteria

Kingdom: Eubacteria

Phylum: Cyanobacteria

Order: Spirulinales

Family: Spirulinaceae

Genus: Spirulina

Species: spirulina turpin

Description

Filamentous, filament unbranched, always without sheath, in clusters regularly screw like
coiled along the whole trichome length.

Ecological importance

Sold as an food supliments

Significance to human

Replace the meat supliments to reduce the food scarcity.

Nostoc

Taxonomy

Scientific classification

Domain: Bacteria

Kingdom: Eubacteria

Phylum: Cyanobacteria

Class: unranked

Order: Nostocales

Family: Nostocaceae

Genus: Nostoc

Species: N. Commune

Description

Colonial, forms small hollow gelatinous globule which grows and become leathert, flattened
and convoluted, forming a gelatinous mass inside thin sheath are numerous and unbranched
hair like stricture called trichomes formed of short cell in a string

Ecological importance

Nostoc colony are rich in nitrogenous substances and hence are used as food in chine and
brazil. Nostoc colonies increase nitrogen contents of the soil and are often to use as
fertilizer.

Significance to human

it is widely consumes as a food in china and japan.

Gloecapsa

Taxonomy

Scientific classification

Domain : Bacteria

Phylum: Cyanobacteria

Order: Chroococcales

Genus: Gloeocapsa

Species: G. Magma

Description

g.magma are ancient line of photposynthesizing bacteria which mass resemble algae in that
they are green.

Ecological importance

As previously ,inhibits the roofs of the houses, feeding off of the limestone filler and the
nutrients trapped in the moisture rich shingles.

Significance to humans

Produce large amount of oxygen in the atmosphere through photosynthesis studies

undergoing for cancer treatment.

Frustulia Amosseana
Phylum: Bacillariophyta

Class : Bacillariophyceae

Order: Naviculales

Family : Amphipleuraceae

Genus : Frustulia

Species : Frustulia amosseana Lange-Bert.

Descripition

Unicellular, although can form colonies in shape of the filament.

Ecological importance

It is used as abrasives in polishing powders, tooth powders, etc.

Significance to human

Responsible for 20% of globan carbon fixation and 40% of marine primary productivity

Laminaria
Taxonomy

Scientific classification

Superphylum: Heterokonta

Class: Phaeophyceae

Order: Laminariales

Family: Laminariaceae

Genus: Laminaria

Species: l. Cloustoui

Description

Green in color, leathery, branched rhizoid, the stipe is circular in cross section, rough and
thick at the base and tapering upwards

Ecological importace

Due to the height of the laminaria, they provide protection for creatures that the open ocean
does not often give. Sea snails and other invertebrates feed on the blades of the laminaria.

Significance to human

It is used to treat cancer , muscle relaxant, main sea weeds maintain the biomass.
