ABOUT THIS COURSE

INTRODUCTION
Online educational methodology, and flipped-classrooms with associated pedagogy of active
learning, have quickly emerged as the mainstay of effective education in this century.
However, most of our teachers lack skills and competencies for proper and effective use of
ICT in education. It is thus an urgent national requirement that all our teachers, at least
those teaching in our professional colleges, are empowered to use technology effectively, to
enhance the quality of education.
To meet this requirement, IIT Bombay has specially designed a Faculty Development
Program (FDP) on "Use of ICT in Education for Online and Blended Learning". A pilot
implementation of this course was done during May-July, 2016. A total of 2193 participants
had successfully completed this FDP and had obtained the certificate. The top performers
from the FDP will be joining this course (FDP101x) as “Associate Faculty” and will assist the
course team in mentoring the current participants.

Based on the inputs of the participants and course team, this year the course is being
offered as a two-part FDP so as to focus on both the Technology and Pedagogy. The first
course under this FDP, with a focus on technology, is titled “Foundation Program in ICT for
Education” and is designed as a Blended/Hybrid MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) –
FDP101x. There will be one-weekend face-to-face sessions at the Remote Centers. The
course will be offered from 03 August to 07 September 2017. The second part of this FDP is
scheduled from 14 September to 12 October 2017.

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:
i. Identify various ICT devices and applications useful in teaching-learning
ii. Develop awareness towards ethical practices for use of ICT in education
iii. Make use of best practices for information dissemination using ICT

Module 1. Information Capture, Storage, and Display

Module 2. The World of Internet and Web

o Best practices for exploration

Module 3. Use of ICT for Resource Creation and Management

 Digital Content Creation using common productivity tools
o Document Editors

 Audio-Video Resource Creation: Spoken Tutorial Methodology
 Content Management Systems
 Learning Management Systems

Module 4. Best Practices for Information dissemination with ICT

 Best Practices for Visual Communication

o ICT as a facilitator for academic ethics and integrity
o Creative Commons Licensing
o Netiquettes for effective email communication
o Practices for engaging in healthy discussion
Facilitating collaborative resource creation and evaluation for online usage

ACTIVITIES
The course will have Learning Dialogue Videos (LeD Videos) by Instructors that familiarize
you with the course content. Most of these videos will have Reflection Spots, where you are
supposed to pause the video and then think, reflect and write (in your course journal) how
the discussed content will be applicable in your own context. The LeD videos also will have
Learning by Doing (LbD) activities, that are small activities aimed at giving you practice in
the content discussed within LeD video. The course will also have Discussion Forums for
Learning experience Interactions that are driven by guiding questions. We expect that all
participants will take part in the discussion forum to advance their learning by discussing the
course content and sharing their own experiences with others. We will also be providing
Learning Extension Resources for advancing the learning.
GRADING
This is a course where you are informed and trained about technology affordances that can
be utilized in regular teaching-learning. And we consider collaboration and practice to be as
important as knowledge acquisition. Hence we have the following six types of graded
activities:
a. Knowledge Quizzes (30% weightage towards overall grade) – These will be based on the
regular content released every week
b. Resource Creation Assignments (15% weightage towards overall grade) on teaching-
learning activity design using technology
c. Reflection quizzes (10% weightage to overall grade) based on your participation in the
discussion forum each week
d. Assimilation quizzes (10% weightage to overall grade) tied to learning extension
resources each week
e. Lab Assignments (10% weightage to overall grade) that will be provided during A-VIEW
Interactions scheduled on 19th and 20th
f. Summative Assessment (25% weightage to overall grade) that will be provided
in the final week

The first four activities are present every week in this course and forms the “Weekly
Assessment Activities”. The Lab assignments are available only on the days of Synchronous
Interactions. The Summative Assessment will be released in the final week.

The due dates of weekly assessment will be 10 days from their release (except in the final
week). i.e. a weekly assessment released on Aug 3 will have to be submitted by Aug 13.
There will not be any relaxation in the due dates.

MENTORSHIP IN THE FDP

From week 2 onwards, each participant will be allotted a mentor. The mentors will be
providing both asynchronous (through emails, discussion forums etc.) and synchronous
(through A-VIEW/Skype/Hangout etc) interactions with the participants.

ESTIMATED EFFORT
A good teacher at this level needs to spend about to 6 to 8 hours each week (including
interactions) for getting full benefits from this FDP. You will also need to put in a similar
effort, and activities in this course will ensure that it gets reflected in your practice without
any additional cost. This course is not very hard, but not a walk- through either!
