Increasing demands on network bandwidth

Wireless Technology and Jargon … in very simple terms

❑ Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11n

A wireless standard released in 2007 and updated in 2009. It can run on 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands. It supports data rates
from 54 Mbit/s to 600 Mbit/s. Given the passage of time, most devices with a wireless interface now support .11n wireless.

❑ Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11ac

A wireless standard released in 2014. It only operates on the 5GHz frequency band. It supports data rates from 433 Mbit/s up to
1.7Gbit/s. As this is a recent standard, there are not as many compatible client devices but the numbers are regularly increasing.
802.11ac devices are generally backward compatible with 802.11n devices.

❑ 3:3x3 vs 3:3x2 vs 2:2x2 etc.

– The first two numbers refer to the number of antennas for upstream and downstream communication.
– The third number refers to the number of spatial streams. More special streams allow for more devices and for better performance per
device.

❑ Clustering
a capability allowing for common configuration of multiple APs within a network. Controllers are not required for this.

IEEE 802.11n versus 802.11ac
Which technology is best for your business needs?

IEEE 802.11n IEEE 802.11ac

– Almost universal compatibility with today’s install base of – Higher data throughput but only most recent laptops and
laptops and smart phones. smart phones support 802.11ac.
– Most cost effective solution for wireless LAN – 802.11ac APs are priced a bit higher than 802.11n APs .
deployments.
– Higher data rates for most demanding data intensive
– Meets the need of basic business application data applications.
throughput needs.
– Good choice if looking for investment protection.

Technology Basics
– Wireless Access Point:
– Provide wireless networking for laptops, PCs, smart phones, tablets, and more;
connects to your existing wired LAN.
– Supports IEEE 802.11n:
– Certified compliant with this popular high-speed Wi-Fi wireless standard.
Backward compatible with older Wi-Fi standards.
– Dual Band operation: HP M210 and HP M220 802.11n Access Points
– Supports wireless connections at 2.4GHz or 5GHz. Most devices support 2.4GHz
but that spectrum can get crowded impacting performance. If your client devices support 802.11n and can operate in the
5Ghz frequency you will experience the highest performance since there is less interference in this frequency band.
– Single radio:
– The radio wirelessly connects to your devices. Depending on your settings, this radio will be operating at 2.4GHz or 5GHz.
Single radio devices make the most affordable APs.
– Simplified administration through clustering
– When a single AP cannot cover your small business or site location
– M220 up to 16 APs
– M210 up to four APs

What Is Clustering?

What is clustering?

Simplified administration of multiple Access Points

• Often small businesses need more than one AP to provide good
PoE/PoE+ gigabit switch
Network network wireless LAN coverage. But multiple APs can be hard
Administrator to administer.
• With clustering technology, when you change the settings of one
access point, other APs in the cluster automatically get updated.
This eliminates the need to individually configure each AP.
– Clustering simplifies set up and ongoing administration
– Clustering enhances security by eliminating errors through multiple
entries
Clustered APs
– Clustering APs work together to automatically adjust channel usage to
minimize impact of interference between AP to AP and environmental
interference

• No additional hardware is required; this is “controller-less”

What is clustering?

Primary use case Clustering

• A cluster must exist on the same subnet
• Multiple clusters can exist on the same network
• Examples of configuration parameters:
– SSID (wireless network name)
– VLAN configuration
1 cluster with many Aps (up to 16 APs) – Wireless encryption – security, passphrase
– Radio configuration
Secondary use case
– RADIUS server configuration

Cluster A Cluster B
Multiple clustered AP groups in either the same
network or separate networks/locations
Captive portal feature
Requires user verification for network access

Additional Access Point features
Main office area Warehouse – Rogue AP detection
