LESSON PLAN : MAGNETIC FIELD

I. Objective

1. Knowledge:

- Define magnet, describe the interaction between like and unlike magnetic
poles.

- Show connection between electricity and magnetism.

- Define magnetic field; state the convention direction of magnetic field.

- Define, describe, statethe features of magnetic field lines.

2. Skill:
- Recognize magnetic things in the real life.
- Distinguish Magnetic field from Electric field.
- Draw magnetic field lines around a single magnet, a straight current
- Draw the combined fields created when like and unlike magnetic poles
interact.
II. Preparation for teaching equipments
1. Teacher
- Some kinds of pernament magnet
- Set of experiments of interaction between a magnet and a current ; between
two currents
- Slides should be prepared.

- Projector to present lectures, questions and answers.

- For each group of students : 2 Bar Magnets; a U magnet; compass needles; salt
shaker of Iron filings; Wax paper.

2. Students

Review knowledge of electric field.

III. Teaching Methods

- Teacher presents keyterms, definition and organize activities

- Students work on problem in individual or group.

IV. Teaching and learning process.

what’s the force between the two wires?
Students: When the current flows through
both in the same direction, the wires attract.
* Teacher: We combine the wires so that the
current flows through the two different directions.
Switch on, what’s the force between the two wires?
Students: When the current flows through
both in the opposite direction, the wires repel.
* Summary: * Magnetic Interaction:
Interactions between two
magnets, between a
magnet and a current or

exert on them are called
magnetic forces.

* Teacher: Do the poles of a horseshoe magnet
attract each other? If you bend the magnet so that
the poles get closer together, what happens to the
force between the poles?
Students: Think and answer the question.
Suggetion: Is each pole of magnet on the
magnetic field? If so, does that field exert a
magnetic force on it?

MAGNETIC FIELD LINES

ACTIVITES CONTENT
Teacher: Gives pupils the experiment
materials The direction of magnetic field lines
- We have some materials: a magnet bar, are represented by the alignment of
iron filings, a rigid paper. I’m going give iron filings sprinkling on the paper
them to you and you will try to do an placed above the bar magnet.
experiment in groups.
As you know, the magnetic field
surrounds a magnet bar. We can create a
pattern by placing a piece of paper over a
magnet and sprinkling the paper with iron
filings.
After you do that, please look at the
paper and tell me about the image you
see.
Student: Work in group placing a piece
of paper over a magnet and sprinkling the
paper with iron filings. Then, they may
give these comments:
- The alignment of iron filling is the
curves. The density of iron filings near
the poles is greater than that in the place
far from the poles.
- The magnet can attract iron so the iron
filing is put on the direction of magnetic
field.

proportional to the closeness of the
another? lines. It is exactly proportional to
the number of lines per unit area
A3: No, they can’t, because we only draw perpendicular to the lines (called
one line at each point. the areal density). Field strength is
proportional to the line density.
Q4: How are magnetic field lines
formed?

A4: They flow from the south pole to the

north pole within a material and north pole
to south pole in the air.

Q5: Comment on the line density and the

strength of the field at other points?

A5: Field strength is proportional to the

line density.

Teacher corrects the pupils’ answers and

states exactly the properties of magnetic
field lines:
