Slayers is an enormously successful
anime and 111a11ga franchise in Japan that
has gained wide popularity in the United
States and Canada. It began in 1990 as a
series of short stories written by Hajin1e
Kanzaka and illustrated by Rui Araizumi,
which were followed by novels. The success
of the mauga lead to the first television
series, The Slayers in 1995. Videotape and
DVD versions were released in the United
States by Software Sculptors and Enoki
Films. This book coves the third series. The
first series, The Slayers and the second series
The Slayers: Next are the subjects of previous
Fan Guides from Guardians ofOrder.

The final season ofTilt Slayers series, Slayers Try. reunites the friends in a
port city where an assembly of Kings plans to send a Oeet to explore the Outer
World. The barrier created by the Mazoku that has separated their lands
from the rest of the world has fallen after 1000 years. Lina and her friends are
recruited by Filia, a priestess of the Fire Dragon King. to come to the Outer
World to prevent a prophecy of great evil from coming to pass. The Slayers
join the fleet, but it is destroyed in a tidal wave and they are the only ones to
reach port in the Outer World.
Lina, Gourry, Amelia, Zelgadis, and Filia are joined in the new land by
XeUos, who has his own mysterious reasons for being there. On the journey
to the Temple of the Fire Dragon King, they learn two valuable things: a
tormented Mazoku named Valgaav wants to kill Lina in revenge for the death
of Lord Gaav, and he is allied with Almayce, a being of immense power from
the Overworld who wants to take Gourry's Sword of Light.

Lina has also come to fully accept the responsibilities that come with great
power. At first motivated by fear of her sister and the promise of grl'al reward, Lina
defies Mazoku, Dragon, and an invading Dark Lord to do what she thinks is right.
Unable to stand by and see others hurt and her world destroyed, she organises the
battle against Darkstar. In the end, she becomes the fulfilment of the prophecy as
the "power between light and darkness,"' representing all of humanity. Accepting and
beating this ultimate challenge. Lina lnmse crosses from adolescence to adulthood.
Gourry has become Lina·s boyfriend, and the two ha\'e settled into a
comfortable relationship. While, at first, she thought of him as a big dope who was
useful as a protector. hr is now her trusted parlnl'r and best friend ... albeit still a big
dope. lie accepts her leadership implicitly. and often knows what she has planned
without her \'Crbalising it. especially in a fight. They are now a natural couple, and
another sign of her growth is her amptance of her need ofGourry in her life.
Lina and Zelgadis first met as enemies. but now she thinks of him as a loyal
ally and friend. Usually cheerful herself, his fatalistic and taciturn nature makes
theirs an odd relationship. She once worried about his habit of wandering off on
his own, but now accepts that as the way he is, though she is still concerned about
him and wants to help find a cmc for his curse. Amelia fills the role of the annoying
little sister for Lina. In the past, she has caused problems by being o\'er·eager, and
her unrealistic ideas about justice and fighting evil often prevent Lina from doing
what seems sensible. Amelia, howerer. has proved usefol in the battles against many
enemies, and the two have bonded like sisters- especially when teasing Gourry.
Filia annoys Lina, becau~e ~he i~ prim and proper. while Lina comes from
commoner stock. Lina enjoys doing things to irritate the thin-skinned Filia, such
as eating everything on the menu, knowing Filia will have to pay. Lina sympathises
with Filia's plight. though, especially alier she learns the secr~t oft.he fate of the
Ancient Dragons. By the end of Slt~1w Try. the two are reconciled with each other
and have become friends.
Xellos and Lina have a special relationship. As she puts it in J\11 ExplosiPe
Sit11ntio11! The One IVho Holds 711e Key!, she knows he will try to betray her and
she thmfore can use him as "a convenience item:· While it would perhaps go
too far to call their relationship ..friendship.· it is based on a mutual respect and a
recognition ofeach other's usefulness. Lina, meanwhile, always knows that Xellos's
presence indicates an especially dangerous quest.

If Gourry had a fault besides his forgetfulness, it is pride. Ile is a superior
sword~man and it is hard for him to refuse a challenge to duel. Perhaps pride in
his family is a factor, too. since his sword is an heirloom handed do1111 from the
legendary Swordsman of Light. He seems to have partially grown past that in Thr
Slayers Try; while he initially opposes giving up the Sword of Light, he willingly
relinquishes it at the end to send Lord Darkstar back to the Ovemorld. He is
content with a good normal sword and his relationship with Lina.
Lina is Gourry's best friend in the series, and she is now his girlfriend. Their
relationship began with him thinking of her merely as a liule girl, growing through
his becoming her protector and friend, and evolving to the point where each
realised they were in love with the other. They have become asmoothly functioning
team, largely because Gourry absolutely trusts Lina's judgement in a crisis. Even if
he cannot understand why she chooses a particular course of action, that Lina has
chosen it is enough for him.
Why Gourry puts up with Lina's abuse is hard to fathom. Perhaps he
tolerates it because he is so easy-going and realises that much of what she says
is true: he is an idiot. Also, despite her irascibility, he knows she trusts him and
values his companionship. Their closeness is shown at the end of the series; when
all the other heroes go their separate ways, Lina and Gourry walk off together, arm
in arm.
Amelia's hero-worship often has driven Gourry to distraction, since it often
landed the group in hot water. Now that she does that less, Gourry has to put up
with her increasing bossiness. She arranges for him to be tied to the rocks as bait.

also orders him about as she trains him to be awarrior ofjustice in The Right Person

As with Lina, Gourry began his relationship with Zelgadis on difficult terms,
yet he slowly came to trust him. While Gourry does not wholly understand the
taciturn chimera-swordsman, Zelgadis becomes a friend and welcome comrade
in arms.
Filia and X<'llos confuse Gourry. The latter is a demon who should be
his enemy, yet he has saved his friends many times and has always acted like a
pleasant fellow to him. Gourry likely takes his lead from Lina; if she trusts him,
he will. Filia and Gourry get off to a rocky start when he looks up her dress to see
why she has a dragon's tail. but, after that, they become allies in the fight to sa\•e
the universe. While never close to each other, Gourry de1•elops a sympathy for
Filia's plight, especially when she is confronted with the truth of what happened
to the Ancient Dragons.

Amelia's world is a simple melodrama, in which one is either a pure-hearted
servant of justice or a villainous blackguard. To her credit. her loyalty to her allies
is absolute and if they serve justice. she is with them until the end. 1Ier faith in the
cause of justice also makes her eternally optimistic. Even in the worst of times. her
friends can count on her "never say die· attitude. It is this strength ofcharacter that
helps them put up with her frequent preaching and hero-worship.
In the past. Amelia's inexperience and na'ivete in the service of justice has
landed her and her friends in trouble. She has been prone to believe whatever
anyone tells her about another person being an agent of good or evil. In prior
years, she fell for the tricks of bounty-hunters working for an evil sorceress. and
momentarily believed she. hersdf. was evil when Lord Gaav confused her. By
the time of 7/ie Slayers Try. however. Amelia is beginning to grow out of this with
experience. She is becoming more perceptive and wise, as seen when she figures
out Honar's secret in /111111t'dia11• Rl'Sl1lts! LoPr Is 111 The Tiny Dij'erences! By the end
of the series, she has assumed a role in the daily government ofSeyruun.
Lina Inverse is like a big sister to Amelia - someone to look up to and
somrone to fear. Amelia also has the little sibling's talent for exasperating her
"big sister." Jn 1111• Slayers Try, Amelia continues the trend established last season
of becoming more and more like Lina - particularly her bad habits. She gobbles
down food as fast as Lina and Gourry and is just as anxious as Lina to find their
next big meal. She is also showing signs of developing a temper and a willingness
to brawl. perhaps again due to Lina's influence.
Gourry is like a big. dumb, reliable brother to her. While she does not do
it as much as Lina, she does boss Gourry around and intimidate him, as in The
Right Person /11 111r Right Place! t\mrlia In Thr Village Offustier! In her 01111 mind,
Amelia is certain that Gourry needs occasional reminders that they serve the cause
of justice.
Amelia has a crush on the mysterious swordsman. Zelgadis. Although he
is a man offew words. his quest for a cure for his tragic curse and his dedication
to whatever cause he champions captures her heart. She does not yet understand
her feelings, however. Amelia is jealous of Lina when the sorceress is paired with
Zelgadis in Thr Hurdle's Cleared? ji/las's llidden Poim!, but cannot understand
why. By the end of the series, she comes to terms with her feelings, as shown when
she asks Zelgadis to come to Seyruun and when she gi\'es him a gift. one of her
medallions lo remember her, after he left the group al the end ofrhe Slayers T(v.
Amelia cannot quite figure out how she should react to Xellos. On the one
hand. he has lied to them. deceived them. manipulated them and used them for
his own ends ... and he is a Mazoku! By all rights. she should be his dire enemy. Yet,
he has also saved their lives many times and proved himself valiant in the ultimate
fight to save the universe. In the end. what is impor~ant lo Amelia. is th~ cause
one serves. As long as Xellos se1ws the cause of JUSllce - even umntenllonally
-Amelia will regard him as an ally and friend.
Filia turns from an employer to a friend over the course of Thr Slayers
Try. Though they never become as close as Amelia and Lina, Amelia no doubt
feels sympathy for Filia's pain and shame when she learns the dark secret of
her people.

Zelgadis's personality is a study in contrast to those of his friends. While CHARACTERS
Gourry and Lina eat like hogs at a trough, he is abstemious: a cup of tea and a small
bit to eat are enough for him. When they whine about their hunger, he quietly
carries on. While they yearn for a soft bed and a warm fire, he quietly endures hard
nights in the wilderness in pursuit of his goals. He says only as much as is necessary
and disapproves offoolishness. In his view, one should always act with dignity and
focus. Paradoxically. this makes him a natural leader, and his resolve in the face
ofdanger has been known to inspire others. He also has a philosophical or poetic
bent, although a rather bleak one. He once describes himself as "An unfortunate
chimera, who wanders the wastelands of his own soul."
While he does not initially have the dose bonds offriendship with the others
that Lina, Amelia, and Gourry share. he is nonetheless loyal to comrades in arms.
even when his self-interest might dictate ignoring them. Although he comes to the
Outer World to find a cure, he joins the quest to defeat Valgaav and Darkstar. Even
when Filia irritates him by being vague about prophecy, and even when the cause
seems lost. he does not abandon his friends or his promise.
Tiu· Slayers Try presents an interesting change in Zelgadis's personality.
During a confrontation in a port in the Outer World. a citizen calls Zelgadis
a "mysterious. heartless swordsman." lie likes the description and takes to
the role with relish, although Filia later makes him pay. He also dramatically
faces-down Jillas and his gunmen in Rmdy for Exile! fs11 '1 Tiro Pt'opk loi•t' s
Etemal?, using his inhuman nature to terrify them by withstanding their
hail of bullets. It is as if he is coming to terms with himself, almost accepting
what he has become. Thm is also a vindictive clement, though, perhaps
saying, "You think of me as a monster, then 1 will show you a monster."
Lina Inverse is a puzzle to Zelgadis. Awoman of immense talent, she seems to
have no self-control and regularly wastes time and energy on creature comforts. She
also tries his patience with her flippant attitudes. He does, however, respect her fierce
determination and skill in a fight. By the time of the confrontation with Darkstar. he
has seen her possessed by the Lord of Nightmares, sun•ive. and win. Although her
temper frightens him, he trusts her judgement in a tight spot implicitly.
Gourry and Zelgadis become friends over the years, swordsmen who trust
each other completely in a pinch. They have little in common intellectually
- Zelgadis may wonder if Gourry even has an intellect - but they both relish a
good fight and appreciate each other's skill.
Amelia makes Zelgadis uncomfortable. When they first met, she was an
annoying. hero-worshipping little kid. Now there are hints she is romantically
attracted to him. His obsession with a cure leads him to deny himself. for the
moment at least. her affections, even though she clearly cares for him in spite of his
monstrous looks. His ascetic, melancholy nature allows him only to carry a token
of her after he leaves the group at the end of Slayers Try.
Xellos greatly annoys Zelgadis. because the mysterious.priest ha.d co~stant~y
fed them false leads about the location of the Claire Bible, winch Zelgad1s
desperately hoped would cure his curse. Zelgadis is a realist, however, and
eventually, albeit grudgingly, accepted the Mazoku as part of the group because of
the power he brings to a fight and the knowledge he has. For Zelgadis, Xellos is an
ally of convenience, and not a friend.
Zelgadis sympathises with the burden Filia carries. but is dumsy in his
attempts to cheer her up. While allies. they never become close.

like a liule girl. In The Hurdle's Cleared? jillas's Hidden Power!, she stays behind aller

Xellos takes special joy in puncturing her fragile sense of dignity. In A Wild

loses control and destroys the town. Indeed. the mere presence of a Mazoku can
send her into a towering rage.
Nevertheless, Filia is a caring, loving. and perceptive person who grows
through the challenges she faces. In A Peace Confiw1ce? This Is The Dragon Shrine?,
she obsen•es that, because humans live shorter lives than dragons, they also live
fuller ones. She is a gentle soul who loves puppies and wants to open an antique jar
and mace store. She even reforms Jillas, whom she takes under her wing after he
tries to kill them all in No font• For Arguing! /lead For 1111· Showdown!
Her growth into a confident, adult woman comes as she learns the truth
behind the near-extinction of the race of Ancient Dragons - that her people had
massacred them because they would not surrender Galvayra, the fifth Oarkstar
weapon. 'vVith her illusions shattered, she takes on the burden of their sin and tries
to rescue \lalgaav from his self.destructive path, though he will have none of it,
even when she offers herself as a sacrifice to save the world. In the end she is given
her chance to make amends for the whole Gold Dragon race. Jn Try Again! Whm
All Retums To White!, a small egg floats down from the sk'}' after the destruction
of Darkstar. It contains an embryonic Ancient Dragon - Valgaav reborn. Filia
accepts the responsibility and becomes mother to the renewed race of Ancient
Dragons. The final symbol of her passage to adulthood comes in the final credits,
where she is shown running her shop and wearing glasses. The unsure teenager
grown into a confident. mature woman.
Filia and Lina are opposites in temperament. or, at least, Filia tries to be
the opposite by maintaining her poise and dignity. When she loses her temper,
though. the two resemble each other more than Filia would like. They begin their
relationship by mutually gelling under each other's skin. united only by Filia's
need to accomplish her mission and Lina's need to avoid her sister's punishment.
She gains respect for Lina as the crisis grows. and Lina develops a great deal of
sympathy for Filia. By the end of the series, Filia and Lina have become friends.
Filia's relationship with Xellos cannot be described so much as "love·hate"
as "hate-tolerate." The Mazoku are her racial enemies, and Xellos especially so.
Once they are joined in the mission. she regularly insults and angers him. and
often refuses Lo co-operate with hin1 in any way. Their adventures together,
however. build a grudging respect between them and perhaps even some degree of
friendliness. though neither would ever admit it to the other.
I!er relationship with \lalgaav is the most important, for he is the vehicle
of her growth. Through the revelations at the Temple of the Ancient Dragons in
Sm•age And Unexplored! History Sealed All'ay!. she lear_ns of his t~rtured past and
the massacre of his people by hers. Already sympathetic toward Ins pam. her he~rt
breaks and she makes a heroic effort to heal his soul. Although she cannot save him
from death in the final batlle with Lina, she becomes the guardian of his egg and,
through his rebirth and healing. Filia finally finds her place in life.

Xellos often cannot operate openly, for many Mazoku would recognise him
on sight. Xellos must therefore use others as his pawns to achieve his masters'
goals. He sets them difficult tests to see if they are up to the real challenges ahead,
and he has a talent for picking the right people. Ha,fog earlier satisfied himself of
the abilities of Lina and her friends, he has no doubts about using them as bait to
draw out Valgaav.
Betrayal is one ofXellos's weapons. and he respects alliances only while they
are useful. If an easier means of achieving a goal presents itself. then the alliance
is expendable. His masters have tasked Xellos to bring Valgaav bark to the ranks
of the Mazoku. and he oilers to kill Lina if\lalgaav agrees in An ExplosiPe Situation!
The One Who Holds The KcJ•!
Xellos is also ruthless. He is uncaring about the plight of others if it does
not affect his mission and he even is willing to kill allies to gain his way. In On thr
Mon•!. he dismisses the destruction oft he Sand People's village as unimportant to
him, since Valgaav is not there any longer. In Etmml DeaJh. Final Farewells! A Cry
To The Fa/Im!. he is prepared to kill Filia and the Supreme Elder in order to get his
hands on the final Darkstar weapon.
Cruelty is a part ofXellos's personality. too. He admits to letting people get in
trouble in A Wild Rumour? }~11 Can't Hart' Smoke Without Fire? because this makes
pursuing a goal more fun. lie dearly takes pleasure in torturing Valgaav in An
Explosfre Situation! The One Who I folds Tiu K1y!
Finally. one cannot forget that ewrything Xellos does is aimed toward one
goal: victory for the Mazoku and the return of the world to pure Chaos. He gives this
as his reason for opposing Valgaa,,.s plan to let Oarkstar do it. for only the Mazoku
of this world should have the pri\•ilege ofdestroying it. Even here his sense ofironic
humour shows; it amuses him that the Mazoku is forced into sa\ing the world.
llis relationship with Lina Inverse is an odd one. On the one hand. he uses
her as a decoy to trap Valgaav: on the other. he dearly respects her ability and
power. which 1ivals that of a Mazoku. Xellos also knows that Lina is aware he
will try to double-cross her. so his deceptions will not work with the sorceress.
Perhaps the best way to describe their relationship is that of friendly enemies who
enjoy each other's company while recognising they may eYentually have Lo cross
swords and spells. Unexplained. however. is why Xellos, one of the most powerful
beings in the universe. lets himself be intimidated by a mortal sorceress. It must
be a secret.
His other significant relationship is with Filia. The Mazoku and the Gold
Dragons are .ancient and mortal enemies. and t~eir ~arty encoun~ers threa~en. to
erupt into violence at any time. Xellos cannot resist pnckmg her pnde and d1gmty.
while Filia insults him al almost every opportunity. By the end of Slayers T(J". they
have set aside their differences long enough to co·operate against the threat of
Darkstar and even develop a grudging regard for each other.
The other major characters - Gourry. Amelia. and Zelgadis - have no
significant relationship \\'ith Xellos other than being friends of Lina ... although he
does enjoy irritating Zelgadis, too.

some of the water that is growing so short. Anna is also an optimist, believing her

to take the form of a jar and spend eternity watching the vengeful spirits of his
crew breaking his beloved jars over and over again. When Filia finally breaks the
curse and lays his ghost to rest. his human forn1 is revealed as that of a portly and
elderly sea captain.

A cool double-sword fencer, at least in his own words, Gen the Wolf is a
member of the Peaceman group. a band of elderly villagers pretending to be
Warriors ofjuslice. He wears blue armour and seems to be close to Reika. Amelia
and Gourf)' meet him in The Right Person !11 Thr Right Place! Amdia In The Village
Ofjustice!

Gravos
Agreen beaslman, Gravos is the loyal servant of Valgaav. He is seven or
eight feet tall. green. and shaped like a hulking h.umanoid ~1·ith a long, th.ick lai.I.
Gravos is immensely strong. and this is one of his two savmg graces. besides Ins
total loyalty to anyone who treats him fairly. Gravos was mistreated years ago when
others of his own kind put out his right eye and left him for dead. Valgaav saved
him and made him the chiefof his beastman servants. While strong. Gmos is not
very intelligent and cannot master the power of Almayce's weapon when he tries
to use it in ballle with Lina. An explosion launches him into orbit. where he stays
until rescued by Filia. True to his character, he becomes her loyal henchman with
his friend Jillas after the defeat of Darkstar.

Marco to share them. When they are at last together, she learns the truth and they
fall to squabbling-just like their parents.

Sirius

in a desperate attempt to destroy the Dark Lord of their universe. Darkstar. Their
plan is to summon Darkstar through aspecial gate, trap it there, then cut it into five

and he agrees to fight Oarkstar, rather than trap him in Lina's universe. In the end
he does justify her faith, sa\•ing not only her town, but both their worlds. Sirius is

Slayers is medieval at its core. Principalities
are ruled by kings, princes, and lesser
nobility. While their role is to provide good
government, justice, and peace to their
people, reality often differs from the ideal.
Democratic government is mostly absent,

advisors. Feudal ties to the land seem weak;
many people hold part-time jobs and are
free to travel where they wish.

Overworld faces destruction after
Darkstar defeats Volphied and absorbs

people on the verge of annihilation.

the chief god of Lina's universe, one of
a pair of beings created by the lord of
Nightmares to do battle for control of the

wounded in the battle in which he defeated
Shabranigdo thousands of years ago, but
his spirit lives on in a form that can be
worshipped and, presumably, contacted.
The prophecy Filia relates to Lina in
Doubiful? A letter From Home! most likely
sent by Ceiphied himself.

The sorcerer quickly changes the parameters ofa spell designed as a Special Attack, thus tailoring it to specific
situations. By expending four times the Energy Point cost to cast a spell, the attacker may add or delete one Ability
or Disability, which will also alter the damage done by the spell Asorcerer may also swap one Ability or Disability
for another ofeither kind. Ifthe added Ability or Disability counts for more than one "slot," then the cost to cast the
spell is further increased by four Energy Points for each past the first. Finally, desperate sorcerers may customise a
spell designed as a Special Attack by spending five times the usual Energy Point cost per Level to improve it one or
more Levels, thus increasing the damage inflicted.

This ratty old cloak was a gift of Lord Valgaav to Jillas, whose love of explosives amused him. The cloak is
actually an extra-dimensional closet that holds as many weapons as Jillas can stuffinto it. He merely has to hang the
weapons from the loops inside his cloak, wrap it around himself, will them into the closet, and open the cloak again.
They are now gone, stored in the extra-dimensional space. To draw out weapons, he doses the cloak again and thinks
of the items he wants. When he opens his cloak, they are hanging from its inside. Items too large to hang from the
cloak will tear it, thus ruining it.

AND WHAT OF THE HEROES?


The animation accompanying the final theme shows what became of the heroes after the defeat of Darkstar.
Filia has opened her antique maces and jars shop in a small town, perhaps the same seaport where she parted from
her friends. Her helpers are Jillas and Gravos, who was rescued from orbit. In a nearby basket, Valgaav's egg lays
amidst blankets. Filia has become his adoptive mother.
In Seyruun, Amelia signs documents brought to her by a long ~e of couns~llors: She has becom~ her father's
partner in ruling Seyruun with justice. Tired, she looks out the wmdow at flying buds, perhaps w1Stful for her
adventures and thinking of her friends, Zelgadis in particular.
Zelgadis again wanders alone, forever looking for a cure for his curse. When he stops to rest, we see he carries
one of Amelia's amulets, a remembrance and token of her affection. Xellos returns to plotting, and is last seen
nervously trying to explain things to his superior, Lord Beastmaster. Lina and Gourry are doin~ what they most
enjoy, hanging out together and stuffing themselves with food until the next adventure comes thelf way.

COSMOLOGY AND MAGIC


The Slaym Try provides more infonnation about the nature of the universe. While previous seasons hinted at
the nature of the universe and magic, this final season dives directly into the meaning of existence.
In the previous seasons, Lina explained to Gourry that their world is like a dish spinning on a pole, and t~at
it was one among many such dishes, each on its own pole. Each dish presumably represented not only the physical
world, but that world's associated Astral Plane and the realm of the afterlife. In The Slayers Try, it is revealed that
travel between these worlds is possible when the Ovenvorlders arrive in Lina's universe. We also learn that each
universe has its own chief God and Dark Lord, the equivalents of Ceiphied and Volphied on the one hand, and
Shabranigdo and Dugradigdo/Darkstar on the other.
The Gods and Dark Lords each have their own servants, who carry out their will. In Lina's universe, these are
the Dragon Race and the Mazoku. In the Ovenvorld, Volphied was served by the God Race, while the servants of
Dugracligdo were eaten when he went insane and became Darkstar. The two sides are normally bitterest enemies,
but, in The Slayers Try, the Mazoku side with the Dragons and the God Race to stop Darkstar. Servants of the Gods
and the Dark Lords will continue to advance their masters' interests, even ifthe master is defeated, as do the Mazoku
for Shabranigdo.
Magic has certain rules in the setting of The Slayers, which are only revealed piecemeal through the three series:
• Black Magic spells are really prayers to Shabranigdo and his minions to use their powers to harm others,
including their own minions or even themselves. The only spells that may hurt a Mazoku without its permission
are those permitted by a higher Mazoku. Thus, Shabranigdo could let the Gaav Flare hurt Lord Gaav, even though
Gaav designed the spell himself and denies permission. This rule, however does not apply to interactions between
fellow Mazoku.
• For a spell to harm a being directly, the target must have an astral body in the Astral Plane of the universe in
which the spell is cast. For example, the Overworlders are immune to the magic of Lina's universe because their astral
bodies are still on the Astral Plane of their universe.
• The magic of the Lord of Nightmares trumps all. As the creator of all the universes, the Lord ofNightmares
is superior to all beings: Gods, Mazoku, and mortal. When invoked, its power easily overwhelms that of its lesser
creations, as it showed when it destroyed Hellrnaster Phibrizzo. This is why the Ragna Blade works against powerful
Mazoku, for it summons the Lord of Nightmare's power, while the Giga-Slave risks summoning the Lord directly.
Of the other forms of magic, White Magic is wasted on the Mazoku, since it is a magic of healing. Holy Magic
has some spells that may be effective against them, while powerful astral spells, such as Ra Tilt, can hurt them by
attacking their astral form, unless they are ovenvhelmingly powerful like the lieutenants ofShabranigdo.
