 Explain why the baptismal font is given a special place within the church

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:

 PowerPoint  Have templates of baptismal fonts for students
 Pictures of the baptismal font to colour in so that they can get onto the iPad
 Religion books (save paper) part of the task quicker.
 Templates printed
 Get Ellie to find a picture online of a baptismal
font and get straight into typing the information
into Pic Collage rather than drawing the
picture.
LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)
Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:
Lesson objectives were achievable, and all students showed me they could explain why the baptismal font is special
on their drawing/pic collage work. Each student gave me at least 3 bits of information about why it is special and
some even recording their voice telling me.

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

At this point I am far more relaxed in front of the kids and am firmer on behaviour management when I need to be.

LESSON DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant)
Resources/References
Time Motivation and Introduction:
2:20pm  Begin the lesson by recapping what we have learnt about water and
why it is symbolic. Ask students for to explain why water is symbolic, PowerPoint
particularly in baptism.

 Tell students that we have started to look at baptism and the different
aspects of baptism that make it such a sacred sacrament. Today we
are going to put our focus on one of the most symbolic parts of
baptism: the baptismal font.
2:30pm
 Show students pictures of the baptismal font in different churches and
ask them to tell you anything they notice about the font. Make a list on
the board. Add to the list points about the location, decorations and
why it is so special.

 Next tell students about holy water. This water has been blessed and
is what is filled in the baptismal font to be used during an individual’s Holy Water
baptism.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

 Tell students that in this short lesson each child will draw a picture of
a baptismal font and colour it in. Then they take a picture of their
drawing and use Pic Collage to annotate their picture explaining the Religion
details of why the baptismal font is so special in the Church (we will books/templates
go over this at the start of the lesson, but I will also have a list on the
white board for students to refer to)

2:45pm  For students that finish this activity with time to spare make sure they
can explain to you exactly why the baptismal font is given a special
place within the church and why it is a sacred symbol.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

 Bring students back to the mat and ask three different students to
iPads
give you a piece of information about the baptismal font (symbolism,
what it looks like, why it is special, why it holds a place in the church)

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

 At 2:50pm students will need to stack and pack, put away their
2:50pm materials and return to the front mat ready for the afternoon routine.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
See that all students create a Pic Collage and use direct questioning
(particularly for those that finish with time to spare – but otherwise while
students work) to gauge their understanding of the baptismal font.
