“There’ll be a big number of people
there with tables and all kinds of foun-
tain pens,” said Leichliter. “I think most
of them are probably like me. They have
some particular pen they collect but
they buy and sell others. It’s an outlet to
move the ones you don’t want and pick
up the ones you do. There’s always
somebody else collecting what you
aren’t.”
Among the St. Louis Pen Show’s
many sponsors is St. Louisan David
Oscarson, who designs pens that retail
starting at $4,500. Oscarson contacted
Morgan upon hearing about the show
and said he is excited for the “hodge-
podge” of different pen fans expected to
attend.
“I made the decision to call Anne and
said, ‘we don’t know each other yet but I
want to be a part of it.’ This is a first for
St. Louis. You can get a pen for $5 or you
can spend upwards of $10,000. You’ve
got a lot of vintage people but then
you’ve got some new manufacturers like
myself. I’m there to support the dealers
Morgan said she and her husband
kept prices low for the show; admission
is $5 for one day and $10 for a three-day
pass. All proceeds will go to a charity to
teach adults and children how to read
and write cursive, a mission which
Morgan said is important to decipher-
ing historical records.
“In the schools, they’re teaching
(children) how to write their name but
they’re not teaching how to connect let-
ters and words. I have friends whose
grandchildren cannot read cursive,”
said Morgan. “It’s kind of a problem. You
can’t do research on your genealogy
because everything before 1886 is back
in church records. If you don’t know
cursive, you don’t have a prayer of know-
ing what it says.”
Morgan expects a crowd somewhere
between 500 and 600 attendees.
Vendors are coming from as far away as
Europe and China. She has already put
down a deposit for next year’s show.
Leichliter said the show seems like it
will be successful. He plans to spend the

“This is the first occasion we’ve had
to do anything home-centered,” said
Oscarson. “I’m hoping everyone will
have fun there.”

Ed Magee, a spokesman and stand-in
for McCulloch, said the incumbent
county prosecutor has far more experi-
ence in law enforcement than his oppo-
nent. McCulloch has been county prose-
cutor since 1991. He is the son of a police
officer killed in the line of duty.
“Mr. McCulloch has a strong record
of working with the state legislature to
get good laws passed,” said Magee. He
cited the Good Samaritan Law that pro-
tects medical professionals when aid is
given in emergency or accident situa-
tions that occur outside of a health care
setting.
