Lesson Idea Name: Elements of a Story- Review Game

Content Area: English Language Arts
Grade Level(s): 1st Grade
Content Standard Addressed:

ELAGSE1RL3 Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.

ELAGSE1RL7 Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.

Technology Standard Addressed:

1. Empowered Learner
c. use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their
learning in a variety of ways.

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Kahoot! offers color coded answer choices that have one-to-one
correspondence to the answers offered for each question. This can help students who might have trouble
matching the answer choice they see on the screen with the answer that they think is right in their head (easy
to read and understand). It also offers anonymity, which encourages all students to participate and answer
the questions, regardless of how shy or outgoing they are in class.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Before the activity begins, the teacher will start off by having a small class discussion about some of the things
students remember in regards to the elements of a story that they previously learned about. Once the
opening discussion ends, the teacher will open up the Kahoot! website on the interactive board in the front of
the classroom and refresh students’ memory about how to use Kahoot! (this tool has been used in class
before so students should be familiar with how to enter the class code and navigate through the activity).
Next, the teacher will instruct table leaders to get enough iPads for each person at their table and distribute
them to their tablemates.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: The only materials that are needed for this
activity are WiFi and access to devices for students to access Kahoot! on (in this case, I am using a class set of
iPads). The teacher will facilitate the activity as students go through the questions and answer them
individually to show what they know. The teacher will be there for help if students have any questions or
need assistance/clarification. The entire activity will take about 10-15 minutes to complete.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
The questions for this activity are in the Kahoot! game that is linked above.

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
The teacher will go over each question and have a discussion with the class about why the correct answer is
better than the other answer choices offered. This will be done in hopes of clearing up any misconceptions
that students might have had before the test. This will also be a good way to end the activity, as the students
will leave class all on the same page about the information they will be assessed on.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the SRT activity, the teacher will discuss the answers and ask students if they have any questions. This
will be a very open-floor type of discussion, where students can state the ideas behind their thinking, bounce
ideas off of one another, and engage in meaningful and authentic conversation that relates to the standard
being addressed. Because this is a review game, the teacher’s goal is to make sure that all of the questions
that their students had have been answered so they feel confident and prepared going into the test.

How will the data be used?

At the end of the activity, the students’ scores/results will be emailed to the teacher, so that they can use
them to discuss any common misconceptions or clarify anything that the students showed confusion on. The
teacher will be the only one with access to these results and the identity of the students who gave each
answer will be kept anonymous when discussing the answers as a class. Because this is a review activity, there
will not be a grade assigned. If students are still curious to see how they did on the questions after going over
the answers in class, they can ask the teacher to see what they got correct/incorrect. Lastly, this data can be
used to differentiate learning if there is time before the assessment to review the material some more. This
could be done by grouping students who showed similar misconceptions into the same center groups and
giving them work that directly relates to what they need more practice on before the test.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

Because I have not tried using an SRT in the classroom, my goal for this activity is to learn how to effectively
incorporate SRTs into my lessons in order to help students learn and engage them in higher levels of thinking.
I hope that this will help my students become more confident in their thinking and encourage them to
respond to questions in class.

Reflective Practice:
I feel that the activity I created will impact student learning by engaging students and preparing them for their
upcoming assessment. It will also help them to apply what they know in a way that is different from the
pencil-and-paper activities that you see in every classroom. In the future, I can use this same SRT, but take it a
step further by having students write and create problems/questions and incorporate those into the review.
