Many of the comforts and conveniences of modern life are mainly due to science
and technology. Science refers to the systematized body of knowledge acquired
through various processes such as observation, inference, creation of hypotheses,
experimentation, and conclusions. Technology, on the other hand, applies science
principles in discoveries and inventions made in science. It is the means by which
improvements on existing materials are undertaken.
The world is vast and as a citizen, one must know how things here on earth
come and go. It is very sure that once in our lifetime, especially during our childhood, it
came to an extent that we asks so many questions, why the sun is hot, why there are no
stars during the day time and why does the sun does not rise with the moon, and so
many more. No single person can really explain everything why things are like that but
science, that is why there are already numbers of science and technology related
institutions not only in the other countries but in the Philippines as well that aims to
impart some knowledge not observable by our naked eyes and educate the people.
The La Union Science Centrum and Museum (LUSCM), the first-ever interactive
hands-on discovery museum in the North, provides a practical and exciting alternative
to formal education through interactive exhibits and its portable Planetarium. LUSCM is
a learning center for everyone. It is an environment where science is portrayed as a
dynamic and active process more than just a collection of facts and figures. It
encourages children and adults alike to explore, interact and appreciate science and
technology, culture and environment.

A museum, collections coming from the formerly the 9

also instituted to augment the science interactive exhibits aiming to preserve the rich
local history of La Union.
The LUSCM is humbly and gratefully dedicated to the people of the City of San
Fernando and the Province of La Union. This was constructed in the year 2003 during
the third term of City Mayor Mary Jane C. Ortega, with the assistance of Senator
Francis N. Pangilinan, the Provincial Government of La Union thru Provincial Governor
Victor F. Ortega, Congressman Manuel C. Ortega, First District of La Union and the
Department of Science and Technology (DOST). This is a model of cooperation among

all levels of government to uplift the quality of education through history, archaeology,
science and technology, and culture and arts. It was inaugurated on the 10th day of
February 2006.

The LUSCM is a self-discovery hands-on science museum. Reader-friendly
labels are available for each exhibit for visitors to better understand how they work.
Teacher-guides are at hand to give assistance when needed. Its current system is
manual. As follows are the manual processes done in order to bring a delegate inside
the building:

1. Maximum number of visitors in particular time slot (1 hour) shall be

60persons.
Available timeslots: 9:00-10:00 ± 10:30-11:30
1:00-2:00 ± 2:30-3:30 ± 4:00-5:00

2. Booking and Reservations can be arranged at the centrum. Tour group

Heads are required to write a letter addressed to the City Mayor for approval.

3. Booking must be done a week before the scheduled visit. The management
has the right to cancel the unconfirmed booking and accommodate other tour
groups by default.

 4. Rescheduling of tours must be done not later than one week after the original
schedule.

5. Walk-In tours less than twenty (20) persons can be admitted without prior
booking and can be accommodated together with a booked tour group.

6. On the day of the tour, Tour group Head should coordinate first with the
Centrum Staff/s before letting the group enter the building.

The LUSCM is really a wonderful place to broaden mind about science and
technology, culture and history of La Union. No one can deny its beauty overlooking the
mountain faces with its green canopy and the peculiar fresh scent of air present
touching your body. This also sometimes, in some other ways, a very good place to
relax and unwind. Learning and relaxing at the same time.
But on the other hand, the LUSCM lacksdissemination of information like the
processes mentioned above. These processes are sometimes unforeseen and
sometimes totally do not know by the visitors because they are not aware of it. As a
result, sometimes there are occurring conflicts of time of the date of visit of the visitors.
Another thing is the location of the LUSCM since it is located at Barangay Cadaklan,
City of San Fernando, La Union. It is distant away from the City proper of San
Fernando.With this, sometimesit causes the delay of some visits because they need to
travel for numbers of meters on an inclined road.
Furthermore, this is a very good reason to create and develop an Information
System for the LUSCM to solve its existing problem and for its promotion and
advertisement to the people of La Union.

The La Union Science Centrum and Museum Information System is a computer-
based system that controls the dissemination of information and manages the
arrangement of tours in the organization.It is a self-discovery hands-on science
museum. Reader-friendly labels are available for some of the photo exhibit posted for
visitors to better understand how they work.These tasks are related organizational
processes that are combined and performed into a single system to replace the affliction
with ease and convenience.‘

The current project is designed to improve the unawareness of people about the
organization. And, the project integrates a database to keep records of the scheduling
of tours. Also, it includes image captures of the exhibits inside the La Union Science
Centrum and Museum including the relics (vases, early food processing tools and
weaving tools), preserved animal and technological discoveries to encourage the users
to visit the place. This system will actually serve to give an outlook to the users on what

is all about in the La Union Science Centrum and Museum without getting in to it and;
will serve as an advertisement for the promotion of the organization.

The general objective of the La Union Science Centrum and Museum Information
System is to efficiently provide reliable and accurate information based on the actual
setup in maintaining an orderly organization. The specific objectives of the proposed
system are:
1. To provide the La Union Science Centrum and Museum a system that will
support them in advertising the organization for the broadening of knowledge of
the students.
2. To innovate a computer-based information system that will manage the needs of
the users and the problems of the employees in informing them what is in the
organization.

computerization of the manual system of the organization. The following are the
