Coding, Analysis and Reflections

I thought that speaking to two individuals at different schools in low SES contexts who were
involved in developing and implementing school-wide homework policies would illuminate
the factors that are most relevant to schools in our localized context. In my research,
homework policies functioned as evidence for how these two respective schools responded to
their localized challenges. What I discovered, however, were more challenges than effective
responses, and a genuine desire from both interview participants to find effective solutions in
this particular area of schooling. Choosing the format of a semi-structured interviews
respected the time of my participants, directed the interview and ensured that I had the
opportunity to cover a broad scope of ideas. Both teachers reported that their schools revised
their homework policies recently (within the last two years) based on current, evidence-based
research, but these policies have not, at this point, been formally evaluated. In their
professional opinions, the primary challenge for effective homework policies in their contexts
was the lack of parental engagement and support and both were at odds as to how to rectify
this on a whole school level. Both of their experiences as classroom teachers led them to
argue that teachers must be communicating with parents, but both expressed that in their
contexts, this was a great challenge. Tellingly, one of the teachers listed an additional
challenge; the lack of resources by which they referred to the lack of internet connection at
home. For the other teacher, this was indeed an issue, but their school has a BYOD policy
where all students are required to own their own computer. Whilst the lack of internet
connection was still an issue impacting on homework planning and completion for some
households, devices enabled students to complete work efficiently, especially rectified if they
participated in homework club. Homework club was a strategy that both school used to
respond to these challenges, yet research has not yet been localised.

Dear Potential Participant:

I am working on a project titled How effective is Homework as a Learning Strategy? for the
class, ‘Researching Teaching and Learning 2,’ at Western Sydney University. As part of the
project, I am collecting information to help inform the design of a teacher research proposal.

Through this semi-structured interview, I hope to ascertain what you deem to be the main
factors that impact the efficacy of homework as a learning strategy in schools in low SES
areas based on your personal experience and expertise. The research question is as follows:
What are the main factors that impact the efficacy of homework as a learning strategy in
schools in low SES areas?

By signing this form, I acknowledge that:

• I have read the project information and have been given the opportunity to discuss the
information and my involvement in the project with the researcher.
• The procedures required for the project and the time involved have been explained to
me, and any questions I have about the project have been answered to my satisfaction.
• I consent to responding to the questions of this semi-structured interview.
• I understand that my involvement is confidential and that the information gained
during this data collection experience will only be reported within the confines of the
‘Researching Teaching and Learning 2’ unit, and that all personal details will be de-
identified from the data.
• I understand that I can withdraw from the project at any time, without affecting my
relationship with the researcher, now or in the future.

By signing below, I acknowledge that I am 18 years of age or older, or I am a full-time

university student who is 17 years old.

Group Contribution Name: Renee Evans

Explain your contribution to the group:

How did you contribute to:

• Identifying group and individual topics?

I initiated the sharing of our Literature Reviews and created a Google Drive for us to use a
working document for ideas and for us all to upload our individual work for ease of
collaboration. I also suggested our central themes: parental involvement and resourcing and
their relationship to the efficacy of homework.

• Developing and implementing the intervention?

I devised the text of the inquiry question of our action research project. I also suggested ways
that we should opt for a diversity of topics and data collection methods to utilize what we’ve
learnt throughout our unit, and test for the purposes of directing a future action research
project.

• Collecting and analyzing preliminary data?

I collected and analysed my own data using coding. I coded the common themes of both my
interviews and shared my results and analyses with my group members via the Google
Document that we had shared. I also contributed towards and gave my own analyses of a
number of other data collections from within the group and gave advice about how they
would lead to the development of the larger action research project we would propose.

• Developing the research presentation?

I personally created and uploaded the video, with contributions from my group members.
This meant that I personally edited the finished product as well as contributed to the
development of the content. I advised on the breakdown of the Script and wrote ¼ of it, along
with my group members.

How did you interact with the other group members?

Well. Communication was strong and we were all willing to work collaboratively to build
this project conceptually.
