JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Staff Nurse Cardiac Catheter Lab

GRADE: Band 5

QUALIFICATIONS: First Level Registered Nurse

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Director of Nursing

RESPONSIBLE TO: Ward/Department Sister/Charge Nurse or Deputy

ROLE SUMMARY: To work as a skilled member of the angiography nursing team


in all areas of the department (recovery, cath lab area and pre-
assessment)
Planning, assessment, implementation and evaluation of
patients care following agreed care pathways
Develop and maintain good unit management experience and
organisational skills
Assist with the provision of an environment conducive to the
education of staff
Duties also to include cleaning and safe handling of equipment

Communication & Leadership

Acts as a role model to develop and encourage harmonious working relationships and
professional rapport within the department and with other disciplines, departments and
external agencies.

Adopts a leadership style that motivates and empowers junior staff in attaining and
developing high standards of patient care and professional development.

Uses clinical expertise and places the patient at the centre of all decision making

Ensures that the ward communication system flows with current information to and from link
nurses forums and benchmarking groups for all ward staff.

Ensures a safe environment is maintained for staff, patients and visitors.

Clinical Risk Management

Uses risk assessment tools to inform the plan of care and evaluate its effectiveness.

Participates in setting and implementing evidenced based standards of care within the ward
in co-operation with the appropriate senior nurse

Participates actively in clinical benchmarking and organisational audit, to improve standards


of care

Patient Experience
Adopts a customer service approach to maintain an excellent communication system with
patients, relatives and other visitors and participates in a review of adverse patient
experiences within the team in order to improve the service.

Maintains the safe custody of patient’s property where appropriate according to hospital
policy.

Initiates investigations and participates in changes to nursing practice following complaints


and/or clinic incidents.

Seek out users views on ward issues in keeping with the Trust’s statutory responsible to
seek the views of public

Practice Development

Ensures that patient experience informs practice development.

Supports a culture whereby staff research and review systems of working and approaches to
care.

Networks closely with the practice development and clinical skills nurses to ensure clinical
competence in self and others

Undertake extended role competences to ensure patient care is delivered in a timely and
manner by the most appropriate person

Professional Development

Assists the ward/department sister/charge nurse and team to develop ward objectives which
compliment and support the Trust’s Nursing and Midwifery Strategy. Ensures that these
objectives are embedded in turn within individual professional development plans.

Organises and appraises the performance of junior nursing staff in liaison with senior ward
staff to ensure the provision of relevant training and development with the aim of achieving
the highest standard of professional and personal contribution to the nursing team.

Participates in identifying ward training requirements.

Assist junior staff in the attainment of Core and Stage 1 competences and actively pursue
own professional competences

Ensures that the ward provides an appropriate learning environment for all staff groups.

Retention & Recruitment

Participates in the interviewing and selection of new junior staff as part of own development.

Assists in the orientation and induction of all new staff.

Attends all mandatory training.

Resource Management

Brings deficits in ward resources to the attention of senior staff.


Utilises all resources and manpower effectively.

Ensures that all pharmaceutical supplies are ordered and administered and controlled drugs
checked in accordance with the policy of the Trust.

Use ward stores to economical levels to ensure costs remain within budgets and that repairs
and replacement of equipment are undertaken in accordance with the Trust Policy.

When in charge of a shift, assumes responsibility, as delegated by the ward/department


sister/charge nurse, for the management of both human and financial resources within the
ward in an effective and efficient manner, liaising with appropriate personnel.

Maintains an awareness of professional developments in nursing and allied disciplines as


appropriate.

Responds positively to advice and criticism and impact of behaviour on others.

Identifies, any personal underlying issues, critically analysing and forming solutions.

Health and Safety

at Work etc Act (1974) to ensure that the agreed safety procedure is carried out to maintain
a safe environment for themselves, other employees and visitors.
AMENDING THE JOB DESCRIPTION: It is expected that as the organisation develops and
changes, it may be necessary to vary the tasks and/or the responsibilities of the post holder.
This will be done in consultation with the post holder and it is hoped that agreement can be
reached to any reasonable changes.

CONFIDENTIALITY: The post holder must at all times maintain complete confidentiality of
the material and information that they handle. Any matters of a confidential nature, or in
particular, information relating to diagnoses and treatment of patients and individual staff
records must not, under any circumstances, be divulged or passed on to any unauthorised
person or persons. The post holder must respect patient named confidentiality in keeping
with “Caldicott principles”.

DATA PROTECTION: The post holder must at all times respect the confidentiality of
information in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act. This includes, if required
to do so, obtaining, processing and/or using information held on a computer in a fair and
lawful way, holding data only for the specified registered purposes and using or disclosing
data only to authorised persons or organisations as instructed.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES: The post holder will be expected to comply with all
statutory legislation, Trust Financial Framework Guidance and approved national and local
policy. The post holder is also expected to be aware of the Trust’s Risk Management
Strategy which includes the responsibilities placed on them by the Health & Safety at Work
etc Act (1974) and the Clinical Governance Framework. All employees are expected to
comply with all Trust Policies and Procedures.

GENERAL: The post holder will be expected to be responsible for his/her continuing
professional development and to take a proactive approach to maintaining personal and
professional effectiveness in an evolving role.

SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN
Everyone employed by the Trust regardless of the work they do has a statutory duty to
safeguard and promote the welfare of children. When children and/or their carers use our
services it is essential that all child protection concerns are both recognised and acted on
appropriately. You have a responsibility to ensure you are familiar with and follow the
Colchester Hospital (CHUFT) child protection procedures and the Trust's supplementary
child protection guidance which is accessed electronically on the Trust's website. To ensure
you are equipped to carry out your duties effectively, you must also attend mandatory child
protection training and updates at the competency level appropriate to the work you do and
in accordance with the Trust's safeguarding children training guidance.
