ANEMIA / IRON

DEFICIENCY TEST HEALTHY IS HAPPY

Iron & It’s Function:
 Iron is an Important component of Hemoglobin, which is the substance in red blood cells that carries
oxygen from your lungs to transport it throughout your body. Hemoglobin represents about two-
thirds of the body’s iron.
 If you don’t have enough iron, your body can’t make enough healthy oxygen carrying red blood cells.
 Iron is very important in maintaining many body functions, including production of Hemoglobin.
 Hemoglobin is the protein in your Red Blood Cells (RBC) that is responsible for carrying oxygen to
your tissues.
 Iron from the Food you eat is absorbed into the body by the cells that line the gastrointestinal tract.
 The body only absorbs a small fraction of the iron you ingest.
 The iron is then released into the blood stream
 In that Blood stream a protein called transferrin is attached, which delivers the Iron to the Liver.
 Iron is stored in the liver as ferritin and released as needed to make new red blood cells in the bone
marrow.
 When red blood cells are no longer able to function (after about 120 days in circulation), they are
re-absorbed by the spleen. Iron from these old cells can also be recycled by the body
