Anul al III-lea
Having to perform this analysis, I have chosen to extract what I thought was a
representative scene from the movie A quiet place (2018, John Krasinski), one of the best
critically-recieved horror movie yet of this year. In this endeavour, I have chosen to
analyze“the bathtub scene” in order to highlight how the shots, angles and lighting contribute
to our perception of this specific genre.
The scene begins with a rolling close-up shot of a woman in a bathtub. The lighting is
dim, the setting unusual. We can feel that something is not in order. The subject sits in a
bathtub, clothed, with no water in it.
(vertically rolling close-up shot – from head to toe, focusing on the subject’s face)
The expression on her face is one of terror, as we can see in the further shots. The
director alternates the close-up shots with mid close-ups that are being filmed at the same
level as the subject’s face.
(close-up shot)
This may be for the author trying to make us relate more to the character and immerse
us in the dim, terrifying atmosphere. The lighting further resembles some thunders that are
being reflected from outside the room as a mid-close-up shot is being horizontally rolled from
left to right in a panoramic manner. The atmosphere is tense and the music begins to agitate as
we are being prepared for the appearance of the “monster” which comes from behind. Scary!
As to conclude, A quiet place is, in my point of view, one of the better horror movies
of all time, up to date. The directorial approach is a very well-crafted one, the art direction,
the acting, the plot and the soundtrack all contribute to this masterpiece. A truly great movie,
worthy of a 100% rating, as it already has had.
