Introduction

A team consisting of seven members from the course Bachelor in International Business
conducted a career workshop in conjunction with the SOMB Carnival 2018. The workshop was
Ill attended by University lectures as Ill as students from the Bachelor program and around
twenty-seven were present. The first module was led by Miss Siti Mazmi Niza Binti Ahmad
Zawawi on the topic of Personal Branding while the second module was on Job interview which
was presented by Miss Lailatul Zuraidah.

Many students have very little experience in being interviewed for positions when they begin
seeking for jobs. Despite possessing excellent resumes, students may fail to secure a placement
if they perform poorly during the job interview. This is where a seminar is of great importance as
it is a great opportunity to develop a wide range of skills as Ill as giving exposure to prepare the
students to face the working environment. The career workshop that took place on the 11 th and
18th April did just that. Thus, it is essential that universities invest resources into services that
optimize success for students seeking jobs, while also providing graduates with marketing and
transferable skills which will enable them to manage their careers.

The objectives for module one was to enable the candidates to identify their unique skills,
interest, values and personality traits and qualities that can direct the candidates towards
preparing a sound personal branding. The exercises that was conducted in the first module helps
the students to gain their confidence by having the knowledge about their strengths and
weaknesses. One of the objectives of the second module was to understand the importance of job
interview and by attending a seminar on job interview, it enabled the students to gain an
understanding of the type of question they would encounter in a formal interview. Besides Miss
Lailatul guide the candidates whether or not their responses are suitable, along with providing
them the most appropriate set of response they should practice for the interview.

The purpose of this seminar was to enhance the student’s skills, expand their knowledge, identify
their strength and apply it to excel in the interview and by conducting these two seminar I
believe I Ire able to do so.

3. Discussion

As a part of Entrepreneurship Skills and Business Ethics & Human Resources Management
subject I was required to conduct two main event in order to fulfil the subject’s requirement.
Prior to that, each and every one in my class assigned with a position together with a task. I was
assigned to be the project director (Shaminy Suresh) where I needed to work with the advisors
and speakers with the event flow and make sure the event goes on track without any problems. I
was also assigned to observe my other team mates work and make sure they doing their work on
time.

As one of the main event we organized, was the career workshop for our university students. The
career workshop held for two days, first day on 11th of April and second on 18th of April at
Manipal International University. The main purpose of this workshop is to nurture
entrepreneurship and leadership skills, to apply theoretical Leadership, Human Resource and
Entrepreneurship knowledge into practice; and to acquire the skills related to career planning.

Furthermore, this workshop was organized to give students the confident to attend their work
interview in future with proper knowledge about the work interview. The targeted participants for
the workshop is 50 and the entry fee for each participants is RM20.00 which includes tea break,
goodie bags that includes file, pen, seminar brochure, water bottle, sweets to avoid sleepiness
and also certificate of participants.

The pre-preparations for the event took place for one week where I organized the decoration,
book the location for workshop, prepared the workshop kits, prepared the refreshment and on the
day Rajarajeswari & Hemahvathi were the emcee for the second day workshop. As the project
directors basically I Ire the runners where I had to take care of each departments progress and
update our lecturer about the progress. I also had weekly meeting in order to keep on track with
the event updates.

5
The first workshop on 11th of April conducted by Siti Mazmi Niza, where she is a HRDF
Malaysian certified trainer since 2015 and passionate in sharing and educating young adults. The
event started with registration of participants and 30 participants joined this carrier workshop.

The objective of first day workshop is to enable the students to identity our unique skills,
interest, values and personality traits and quality that can be direct us towards preparing sound
personal branding. Prior to that objective, as a first session the speaker talked about personal
branding and exercises.

The workshop held on the 18th of April was regarding resume writing and ways to tackle an
interview. This session was conducted by Ms Lailatul Zuraidah. Ms Lailatul has vast experience
in the management side of an industry and is Ill versed in conducting seminars and workshops.
She is also one of the most reputable Senior Lecturer of Manipal International University

This session was conducted to equip students on ways how to carry themselves and perform in
interviews to secure jobs.

4. Lessons Learned

There were a lot of information that Ire shared during the second workshop by the speaker. The
first half of the talk, Ms Lailatul went through on the importance of writing a resume and the
information that are crucial in writing a resume. She also briefed us on what letters should go
along with the resume itself.

The second half of the workshop was the most attention-grabbing session, during the Ms
Lailatul’s session when she mentioned about how an interviewee should always carry him or
herself during an interview and how one should dress up for an interview. The key points that she
mentioned Ire, must put on a closed shoe, the way a person should walk, dressing sense of an
individual and body language. She also updated us on ways to answer questions during an
interview. It is very important for the interviewee to know if the questions asked are within the
context of the job requirement. I also had the privilege to spectate a few demonstrations done by
our speakers on ways to walk and to address the interviewer.

5. Recommendation

Based on our Career Workshop, there were two events was held which known as personal
branding and job interview session. As an organizer of the event, I have prepared feedback form
for participants to improve our overall performances. According to the feedback forms, I have
made consideration upon participants’ feedback to gain more experience. Besides, there are good
and also bad comments regarding our career workshop yet I believe that was the best opportunity
for us to conduct more events. Among all the feedback by participants’ I have choose the best
five feedbacks to evaluate our progressed.

Firstly, as mentioned in the feedback form, universities should conduct more day campaign to
train students for their face working life in future. Based on this issue, universities must come out
with a compulsory campaign for all the faculty of students for each month in order to explore
students to more knowledge and activities. These solutions definitely can make all the students to
be alert towards their education, career, and also future. By conducting this kind of campaign can
help students to polish their skills yet to be outdated.

Furthermore, “I would suggest more interaction between participants such as interview session
for every participant in order to enhance their practical skills”, as stated in the feedback form.
This suggestion showed that each and every student really needs lectures couching, guidance and
also lessons to enhance their learning skills. Related to this issue, universities should come out
with this “Mentor and Mentee” program which means divided twenty students into a group and
appoint two lectures for each group of students. In this case, mentor is known as lectures and
mentee is known as students. Followed by, all the lectures should identify their group of students
to play their roles effectively so each of every month these groups of mentor and mentee should
conduct a day campaign in related topics to enhance the interaction between lectures and
students.

This program can make all the students to interact with their lectures more conveniently because
there are small numbers of students in a group with two lectures. In fact, universities should add
this as a subject in the timetable of school to make students to be more knowledgeable, proactive
and up-to-date. For example, if this concept is applied lectures may interact with each and every
student and not only choose one volunteer in a group because this makes lack of experience for
students.

7
Lectures should interact with each and one students regarding resume writing and interview
session in order to enhance their practical skills, on how to prepare good resume, and improved
ethics on interview session.

Thirdly, “In both sessions there are too wordy and lack of visual things”, stated in the feedback
form. This feedback showed that participants’ felt boring in between of sessions it’s because
there are too many words and lack of visual such as videos related to the topics. Based on this
feedback, lectures should come up with short videos, or turn up slides with attractive images
which are related with the topics of the day rather than turn up with too many wordings. Despite,
the impact of too many wordings are loss consideration upon the messages are given by lectures
because participants’ may feel sleepy, boring, and dissatisfied with the workshops.

In this case, lectures should prepare slides with the clip that will put participants’ in the right
mood and that reinforces lectures story because videos are a great tool when it comes to giving
an engaging presentation and videos can evoke emotions in an audience that could be
otherwise quite difficult to elicit. Besides, one of the best ways to get participants to stay focused
is to make them feel like they’re a part of the story. There are a few simple things lectures can do
to get participants to participate in the presentation to making it more interactive.

Furthermore, “More real experiences workshop could be more useful”, stated in the feedback
form. Therefore, university should imply more hands-on approach workshop to expose students
to the real working environment. For example, university should invite an established
entrepreneur or business speaker to conduct a session with the students.

In addition, there was an issue regarding student being afraid to voice out their questions and
opinions regarding the session. Based on this issue, the university should make all the students
feel comfortable to provide their input and suggestions boldly. For example, the speaker should
try to identify the introvert students and to remember their names so that while conducting the
session, the speaker can encourage those students to speak out which will indirectly boost their
confidence.

6. Conclusion

The main purpose of this workshop is to nurture entrepreneurship and leadership skills, to apply
