I thought of compiling and editing the informations received from various quarters
about my father and his ancestors who were connected with the establishment of Majlisul
Ulema and Jamal Mohamed College in Trichy. They were available in bits and pieces and
found in some books and Magazines. The articles written by eminent Professors reveal the
amount of sacrifice and hard work put in by my father who spent his entire life for the
development of our College and other Institutions in our campus. Therefore I deemed it fit
to bring out a souvenir which he rightly deserves.
I have written articles about my father whom I know from my childhood and about
our Founder Haji Jamal Mohamed Sahib based on the informations given by my father and
my grandfather. I should admit and appreciate the fact that my father has given me a lot of
information about how the College was started and also about his father, grandfather and
great grandfather.
What I know about my ancestors, the present and future generation may or may not
know. My sole intention is to bring to the notice of my family members, about the great
deeds done by my father and his ancestors to give education to the economically backward
and financially weak students of our community and also other communities. They should
be aware of the history and events that have taken place, which should motivate them to
devote their valuable time and energy for the uplift of the society in all fields. That is why I
have taken pains to collect, edit and release this memorable Souvenir.
Hajee M.J.M. Abdul Gafoor Sahib was not only connected with Educational
Institutions run by the Society of Jamal Mohamed College, he was a multi faceted personality
connected with all our family Trusts in Madras. He was connected with the opening of
Jamalia Higher Secondary School in Madras founded by his father. He was the Naazir of
Jamalia Arabic College and he built the new mosque in the Jamalia Arabic College by
collecting more than 25 lacs. He was the Muthavalli of Rahmania Jumma Masjid, Perambur
and played a vital role in developing it, and the present stature of the Masjid owes a lot to him.
He was the Secretary of the South Indian Athletic Association for many years. He was a senior
member of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association and was it's Executive Committee member for
a continuous period of eight years. Syed Abdul Wahab Buhari sahib, the former Principal of
Jamalia Arabic College and The New College, Madras and Former Professor of Presidency
College, Madras once wrote an article “ The three great Jamals” recalling the services
rendered by my first generation Haji. Jamal Mohideen sahib who donated the Jamal
Mohideen buildings of our College and who founded Jamalia Arabic College, Madras in 1898
and also the co-founder of Majlisul Ulama, Trichy along with N. Mohamed Mian Rowther and
about Haji. Jamal Mohamed, Founder of Jamal Mohamed College and M.J. Jamal Mohideen,
Ex-MP founder Secretary of JMC, Trichy which was started in the year 1951.
In my opinion and taking into account the views expressed by various writers about
Gafoor Sahib, I would like to call him as the “Fourth great Jamal”.
I am very happy to know that a souvenir is being broughtout to perpetuate the memory of
Haji. M. J. M. Abdul Gafoor Sahib Our Former Secretary and Correspondent. I had a very long association with him and I
can recall with pride that I was nominated as a member of the Management Committee in 1995 when brother Haji Gafoor
sahib was the Secretary and Correspondent and Haji. K.A. Khaleel Ahamed sahib was the Treasurer. In 2003, I was
nominated as the Assistant Secretary of the College Management Committee to help the Secretary and Correspondent in
all administrative activities. I had the fortune of travelling with him to overseas countries and also to meet our Alumni in
many places in Tamil Nadu. I was fortunate to perform my Umra in the company of our brother Gafoor sahib and he helped
me to touch the sacred stone (Hajrul Aswath). He was very friendly with our N.M. Family and had close association with our
Founder N.M.Khajamian Rowther, Founder Treasurer N.M.Abdul Samad Sahib and my father N.M.Abdul Kader Sahib
who was the Secretary and Correspondent when Gafoor sahib was the Treasurer. He used to visit our house quite often to
meet my parents and my brothers. He was more than a relative to all of us.
In 2011, he stepped down as Secretary and Correspondent and elevated me as the Secretary and Correspondent
and got the confirmation for me as Secretary and Correspondent from the Directorate of Collegiate Education within 3
days by using his good offices and fine rapport with the officials of the DC office, Chennai. He used to depute me to look
after the College work like construction of buildings and other related works and was very helpful to me in my formative
years as Committee Member and Assistant Secretary by guiding and motivating me which enabled me to perform my duty
as the Secretary and Correspondent of the College from 2011 onwards in a very efficient manner. I congratulate my friend
Haji M.J. Jamal Mohamed our present Treasurer and the illustrious son of Haji. M.J.M. Abdul Gafoor sahib and also my
close friend for nearly 4 decades for the initiative taken by him to bring out this souvenir which contains many informations
about him and the long standing service rendered by him to all our educational institutions in general and more particular to
the Jamal Mohamed College for nearly 4 decades. It also contains information regarding the ancestors of Gafoor sahib
who were connected with our institution. May Allah bless our brother Gafoor sahib with Jannath and heavenly abode.
Yours lovingly,
He was a personal friend of mine and an elder brother to me for more than 6 decades and he used to stay in my house only
whenever he visited Trichy from Madras. His father M.J. Jamal Mohideen Ex MP. Fondly known as “Attau” sahib was my father’s
best friend. They are the two personalities who really worked to fulfill the dream of our founders to initiate and start the Jamal
Mohamed College. Mr. Jamal Mohideen was the Founder Secretary and my Father N.M.Abdul Samad was the Founder Treasurer.
All my children were very much attached to him since he always stayed in our house and called him as “Periya Athaa” (Elder
Father). My best wishes to his son for venturing to bring out a souvenir to remember his worthy and glorious service to all our
institutions in the campus and recall with pride his efforts taken to start and commence the Women Section in 1999 and also for
starting the MBA (Jamal Institute of Management) in the year 2000. One more laudable achievement of him is the starting of JMC
Ayesha Girls Matriculation School in 2010. He was also responsible for getting permission from NCTE, Bangalore and started
Jamal Mohamed College of Teacher Education (B.Ed) during his tenure as Secretary and Correspondent.
Let the Almighty shower his choicest blessings on him and provide a place in Jannath. Let us all pray for his Magfirath
and heavenly abode.
Yours lovingly,
My dear “Periyatha” was a simpleton. He chose to travel by Rockfort Express to reach Rock
City from Chennai. Another example for his simplicity was his further travel by bus from
Palakkarai to Tollgate by bus No.21. His legs automatically found way to N.M.Colony, to our house
and my “Periyatha” used to consult my father on all matters related to our College, besides family
matters.
Whenever I went to Chennai during 1985, I used to travel in Chennai with my dear
“Periyatha” by his white coloured “Lambrata” Scooter. The places, the persons, the purchases, the
pleasure – all remain green in my memory even now, though I was just ten years old at that time. To
add grace and gaiety to our relationship his sons and daughters were more intimate with me and
even we attended “Kanduri” festivals held at Dindigul which were dearer to our heart. He was a
strong lover of Cricket game and loved watching matches on Television. The Urdu “Ghazals” were
the sources of enjoyment and feast to his ears for many years.
“We eat to live and not live to eat”. True to this dictum, my “Periyatha” had his food habits
in a good manner right from his early days, I was told by my father. Light and restricted food only he
took avoiding oily items and prawns for having a healthy life. I know he never suffered from any
serious health issues even at his old age only because of his better habits of food.
A man is known by his dress and address, so said scholars. My “Periyatha” used to wear
white shirt and dhoti, symbolic of his pure heart – “Purity” and “Simplicity” are the key words
which lock our heart for a role model royalty.
When my “Periyatha” was the Secretary and Correspondent of our College, I had a unique
chance of being a Jamalian. My father was the Treasurer and Janab. N. Abdul Samad was the
Principal at that time. I was given B.Com., Admission in 1995 by my “Periyatha” with a smiling
face. How lucky I was! During my College days he gave me valuable inputs to uplift my care and
career for a potential and successful goal of life.
I joined as a Lecturer in Jamal Institute of Management in 2001 and elevated as the Director
of Jamal Institute of Management in 2011. Another incident that occurred in Chennai rolls in my
memory. Whenever I went to Chennai my “Periyatha” used to take me to the Secretariat and AICTE
Office to get things done systematically sincerely and superbly. I learnt the art of getting things
done from officials outside. How nicely, catchingly and diplomatically he spoke to the persons
concerned in the AICTE office and Government Officials!
During a Summer Vacation in 2015, I was at Kanyakumari residence with members and
relatives of my family. I never had such a shock in my life. The news of my Periyatha's sickness and
admission at Ramachandra Hospital, Porur, Chennai, pierced my heart and ears sadly. Mr.
Jamaludeen, his younger son confirmed the news of the sudden death of my “Periyatha” due to a
rd
massive heart attack on 3 May 2015 at 1.30 p.m. I rushed to the hospital to see the sad demise of a
super giant. Then I attended his funeral with all my in laws and relatives in Chennai. A great
Jambavan of Jamal died decently. But his giant actions for the growth and glory of our institution
will live in the hearts of everyone in this holy soil.
Haji.Janab.M.J.M.Abdul Gafoor sahib was a gem of human being. His majestic look
always inspires everyone. He was very calm at the same time resolute in his decisions. His
charismatic appearance easily attracted everyone's respect and affection which naturally arise on
seeing such a great personality.
The welfare of the college was the sole aim of his every breath. It is a divine gift for me to
associate myself with such a matchless personality in my life. Though he was our employer, he
never treated me like an employee. He always treated every staff member of this great institution
with much respect and maintained a piously-nice relationship. He used to say, “We own the staff
and the staff own this college”.
Personally I was much grateful to the great humanitarian Janab. Abdul Gafoor Sahib.
When the then Principal Janab. Dr. M.Sheik Mohamed and Hostel Co-ordinator
Dr. R. Khader Mohideen approached him to consult for making me as the next Co-ordinator of
Hostels, he politely disclosed his association with my Father in Law Dr. P. Shahul Hameed and told
me that he stayed in his house in Chidambaram long back. On several occasions, he reminded the
incident. Such was the generosity of this great personality.
When I was a Deputy Warden in our College Hostel, an unforgettable incident occurred.
An intimate relative of our Gafoor sahib was an inmate who involved himself in a mischievous
matter, resulted in disciplinary case. This problem was taken to the ears of Mr. Gafoor Sahib. What
a great surprise! “Send him out of hostel” was the quick response, consequently that student was
sent out. Can anyone imagine such a fair and honest administrative decision anywhere? Such
things can happen only in Jamal. When I took charge as the Co-ordinator of the Hostels, he
insisted me to give contract only to those tenders who quote the least amount for any project. He
was very careful in honestly maintaining justification in every matter.
Here I wish to share another incident which proves his helping tendency irrespective of
any difference. In the year 2010, I wished to go for Haj pilgrimage. Only one day was there to start
my pilgrimage. But there were some problems in getting clearance from the Office of the Directorate
of Collegiate Education.
Our former Secretary and Correspondent stepped in and directly went to the DCE office
and solved all the issues. The Very next day, he gave me the orders in Chennai and gave send off to
me with his blessings. I felt humble when he requested me to buy a new Musalla and offer prayer in
the same in front of Kaaba and Madina and return it to him so that he could do his regular prayer in
the same Musalla. I abided by his words and he was also equally happy on receiving it. What else
can give me more pleasure?
I realized his duty consciousness and sincerity when myself and my Father in Law visited
him to inquire about his health. He was bedridden and could not walk. Even in such a situation, he
asked us to do dua for him so that he could gain good health and do his sincere and active service to
the college and community.
On several occasions, I got an opportunity to associate myself with our Abdul Gafoor
Sahib. He actively participated in every function conducted in the hostel. He would visit the
function punctually and make his presence majestically with his white attire. He would be sitting
like a lion in the front row. On one occasion, he returned us a shawl as he felt that it was an extra
shawl, may be meant for some other dignitary. Very meticulously, he maintained his character and
became a role model for others.
It was a great opportunity for me to have contact with eminent personalities and Alumni
of our college who have settled all over the world when I was bestowed with the position of Asst.
Secretary and then Secretary of our Alumni Association. I thankfully remember our former
Secretary and all former Principals and Present Management Committee for having good
confidence on me.

I am very pleased to know about the launching of Souvenir on 21st June 2018 about Haji
Abdul Gafoor Sahib.
As on date he was the longest serving Secretary and Correspondent having good 22 years
(1989-2011) of service as Secretary and Correspondent and also as Treasurer for 17 years. I joined
the College in 2002 and completed my MCA in 2008. He was the Secretary at that time and
appointed me as a Lecturer in Computer Science Department in the year 2008. He attended my
wedding on 01.01.2011 and visited my father-in-law's house in Singapore during the month of May
2011 and had lunch and high tea.
He was very affectionate with our family and was an elder brother to my father. He was a very
hard working man and towering personality. When my father was nominated as Assistant Secretary
in 2003, to assist him he and my father along with our Former Treasurer Haji. Khaleel Ahamed
Sahib worked in Tandem for the growth and development of all the educational institution in our
campus. Our College achieved many mile stone during his tenure as Secretary and Correspondent. I
thank our brother Jamal Mohamed for giving me this opportunity to recall my association with
“Periatha” (Elder Father) and I wish all the best for the successful release on 21.06.2018.
I send my best wishes for the successful launching of this souvenir and thank for the
opportunity given to me to recall some of my association with our former Secretary. Let the

was a very sincere and hardworking and was instrumental in developing Jamal
mohamed college trichy and other educational institutions in the campus. He was
connected with all our family trust in madras. He was very loving and attached to all family
members and one of the tallest leaders of jamal family. He earned a big reputation and
fame because of his honesty.
I wish all the best for the smooth release of the souvenir and thank all the
contributors for its success.

This college has been with prosperity named after the late Haji. M. Jamal Mohamed
Sahib, as a token of his services to the country, more particularly, in the educational field and to
the Majlis-ul-Ulema which he was President for more than two decades. When late
N.M.Khajamian Rowther and his colleagues in the Majlis-ul-Ulema decided to name their
venture as Jamal Mohamed College, the suggestion was well received by everyone who knew
the late Haji. M. Jamal Mohamed Sahib and all of them thought that the College would be a fitting
memorial to him. His portrait is here and I request Sri Kamaraj Nadar, our Popular Chief Minister
to unveil it.
