A Power Cut

Un corte de luz

Yesterday there was a power cut.

Ayer hubo un corte de luz.

I was left without electricity for hours.

Me quedé sin electricidad durante horas.

At first I didn't pay much attention but as the day went by

Al principio no le presté mucha atención, pero tal como avanzaba el día

I started to feel a bit worried and panicky.

empecé a sentirme un poco preocupado y empecé a entrar en pánico.

When the electricity had first gone off

I went to switch the telly on to take my mind off it.

But obviously I couldn't switch the telly on.

Then I decided to turn my computer on to look at the Internet

to pass the time until the lights came back on.

But of course I couldn't turn that on either.

At this point I was still fairly calm

So then I picked up the phone to ring my friend

I had left it charging but... obviously it hadn't charged up because of the power cut.

Now I was starting to feel rather agitated and worked up. I couldn't do anything at all.

I said to myself "Come on. Sit down and read a book.

You don't need electricity to read a book."

Then it hit me. Yes! You do need electricity!

It was ten o'clock at night and I couldn't read without light.

In the end I was so fed up of not having any electricity

and so anxious that I decided to heat up some water to make myself a relaxing camomile tea.

I put some water into a cup. ¡Success! Taps don't need electricity to work.

Then I put the cup in the microwave to heat up th... Damn!

The microwave won't work without electricity.

So then I had to turn to a very archaic method,

something almost from the Stone Age. I had to use the gas!

I got a match, turned the gas on and...

there I was like the early humans when they discovered fire.

I stared at the flame for over half an hour,

gazing at it in awe and passing my hand through it to feel the heat.

Then I finally put the pan on and heated up the water.

I was just about to drink my camomile tea and...

the lights came on! Aaahhh!
