1. INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this document is to specify the location, the quality and the quantity of
effluents that can flow out from the process units.

This document is divided by units and by type of emissions.

For the waste water from sewers a buffer tank is foreseen at the inlet of the waste
water treatment unit in order to manage the possible peaks of effluents flows.

2. LIQUEFACTION AND FERMENTATION UNITS (03 and 04)

2.1. Liquid effluents

The only liquid effluents that will be emitted from these units are the waste water from
sewers. They come from cleaning operations (equipment’s drains / flushing) or when
samples are collected or in case of abnormal operations (leakage, tank foaming ...).

These effluents will be collected from sewers network to a waste water retention
dedicated for the liquefaction and fermentation units (see “drain pit” on drawing n°
P999-03-PI-15-001-RevA- Liquefaction and fermentation layout plan view).

2.2. Gaseous effluents

No significant gaseous effluents will be emitted from liquefaction unit. Only a small
amount of water vapors from liquefaction tanks vents are to be expected because of the
temperature (90°C)

Gaseous effluents will be emitted from fermentation unit. Washing columns will allow
reducing the quantity of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) that will be emitted. The
following estimated characteristics are to be considered at washing columns vents:

C0410 (washing column for prefermentation) vent:

Parameter Value Unit

Flow 1200 to 1350 Nm3/h
CO2 700 to 800 kg/h
VOC 100 to 200 mgC/ Nm3

C0420 (washing column for fermentation) vent:

Parameter Value Unit

Flow 4500 to 4900 Nm3/h
CO2 5400 to 5900 kg/h
VOC 300 to 500 mgC/ Nm3

3. DISTILLATION AND DEHYDRATION UNITS (05 and 06)

3.1. Liquid effluents

Liquids effluents emitted from these units are:
- Spent feints: clear liquid flowing from lutter column basement that can be recycled
in fermentation washing column or for CIP solutions preparation (unit-13)
- Waste water from sewers. They come from cleaning operations (equipment’s
drains) or when samples are collected or in case of abnormal operations
(leakages...)
- Process condensate: clear liquid from R0514 tank that can be recycled for CIP
solutions preparation. The amount of process condensate produced will depend on
the quantity of thin stillage recycled in liquefaction unit.

Spent feints characteristics:

Parameter Value Unit

B Maxi flow (*) 10.5 m3/h
[ COD 3000 mg O2/kg
pH 5 pH
T
Temperature 60 – 70 °C

t
a Process condensate and spent feints can be treated in water treatment unit to be
recycled as make-up water for cooling tower and boiler in order to optimize city water
t consumption.

3.2. Gaseous effluents

Gaseous effluents will be emitted from distillation and dehydration units at vacuum
pumps discharge. A washing column will allow reducing the quantity of Volatile
Organic Compounds (VOC) that will be emitted. The following estimated characteristics
are to be considered at washing column vent:

C0500 vent:

Parameter Value Unit

Flow 800 to 1300 Nm3/h
VOC 500 to 800 mgC/ Nm3

4. SEPARATION AND CONCENTRATION UNITS (07 and 08)

No gaseous effluents will be emitted from these units. Only a small amount of water
vapors from stillage and syrup tanks vents are to be expected because of the
temperature.

4.1. Liquid effluents

The only liquid effluents that will be emitted from these units are the waste water from
sewers. They come from cleaning operations (equipment’s drains / flushing) or when
samples are collected or in case of abnormal operations (tank overflows ...).

Waste water will be collected from sewers network to a waste water retention
dedicated for the separation and concentration units (see “drain pit” on drawing n°
B P999-08-CV-52-001-RevA- Concentration and Separation unit civil works guidelines).
