Planting for tomorrow

Green thumbs are invited to roll up their sleeves and
help plant 5000 new trees at the 13th annual Grow West
Community Planting Day this Sunday 15 July.
The annual planting day is one of the Grow West’s biggest
events and is an important opportunity to rejuvenate and
restore local landscapes. Over the past 15 years, Grow West
has worked with thousands of volunteers and hundreds of
landholders, who have helped plant over a million trees in
the Upper Werribee Catchment.
This year, the planting day will be held at Sheoak Hill,
a 552ha former cropping and grazing property nestled
between Brisbane Ranges National Park and Werribee Gorge
State Park, in the Rowsley Valley.
The goal of the Sheoak Hill project is to re-establish a link
between the two parks by managing existing vegetation,
controlling weeds and rabbits and revegetating both the flats
as wells as the shallow and highly erodible hillsides.
Port Phillip and Westernport CMA’s Grow West Coordinator,
Emma Muir, is excited to be teaming up with the Victorian
National Parks Association and other community
organisations for the event.
“We’ve been working with the VNPA for many years now,
so it’s very exciting run our annual community planting day
at a location that will directly benefit a national park.
“With a bit of work from some dedicated volunteers, this
park has the potential to be a significant community asset
and improve the health of the local environment.”
Ms Muir said it is an ambitious project, but with rewards for
everyone that attends.
“By participating in the planting day you’ll be helping to
reform this important corridor for threatened wildlife such
as Swift Parrots and Brush-tailed Phascogales.”
Organisations and local groups volunteering their support
on the day include:
VNPA, Fifteen Trees, Bendigo Bank, Friends of Werribee
Gorge and Long Forest Mallee, Bacchus Marsh Lions Club,
Victorian Mobile Landcare Group and Bacchus Marsh Scouts
and Girl Guides. Special thanks were acknowledged to host
Paul Dettman.
The event has been funded through the Greening the West
– 1 Million Tree program which is part of the Australian
Government’s National Landcare Program. The project
creates a unique opportunity to make substantial, wide
ranging improvements to the liveability and sustainability
of the west.
The Grow West Community Planting Day is on Sunday
15 July, 9.30am-4pm, at Sheoak Hill, 1216 Glenmore, Rd,
Glenmore. Lunch and refreshments will be provided (BYO
cup and plate to help reduce waste).

Under the proposed law,
those who provide shopping
trolleys will be required to
take actions to reduce the
likelihood of them being
taken away and dumped or
left on the streets.
Land owners and occupiers
of land will have responsi-
bility for maintaining the
nature strip in-front of their
property, and new require-
ments will be put in place for
people camping on private
land.
Among other changes, con-
ditions will also be put in
place for shipping contain-
ers and also for the riding
of recreational vehicles in
residential areas.

living with a disability in
Moorabool Shire.
Mr Colgan says the Mar-
veloo unit enables people
with disabilities to visit
places or attend events they
might not otherwise go to
because of inadequate toilet
facilities. The unit has space
enough for one disabled per-
son and two carers to use the
toilet facility with dignity,
ease and hygiene.
At 8 x 3 metres the Mar-
veloo unit is the maximum
length and width allowable
for transporting on Victorian
roads. Without the need of a
power or water supply it can

“It means that events and
festivals in Moorabool and
neighbouring areas can be
truly inclusive events. Peo-
ple with disabilities will not
be limited in the places they
can go to and the time they
spend at an event. It will
broaden their world and
maximise their participation
and inclusion in sporting,
cultural and recreational
events.”
At a cost of $110,000 to build,
while the Shire’s Marveloo
will have a permanent home
at the Andy Arnold Centre,
it will be transported to
events around the shire and
could be hired by adjoining
municipalities.

Lost a snake?

Most people have a cat or dog go missing, but recently an
unusual reptile, for the area, was found.
Carpet pythons are generally found in habitats ranging
from tropical rainforest in the north-east of Australia to arid
and coastal regions, not in the Central Highlands.
When a Buninyong resident contacted the Department of
Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) about a
carpet python found in their woodshed a month ago it came
as a surprise.
DELWP Program Manager of Compliance Operations, Jim
O’Brien said the python was well outside of the natural range
and climate for this species.
“He is healthy and happy being handled, so he must belong
to someone.”
Lovingly named ‘Stanley’ by the DWELP team, the non-
venomous python appears to have been well cared for.
DELWP is hoping an owner will come forward looking for
the nearly three-metre reptile.
“We would love to hand him back to his owner, so ‘Stanley’
can continue to be cared for.”

In numerical terms, re-
gional Victoria population

that of Adelaide’s and nearly
matched that of Perth.
While we can’t be certain
of the direct correlation, we
do know that median house
price in regional Victoria in-
creased by 6.4 per cent over
July 2016-June 2017. When
we look at the annual in-
crease in the 2017 calendar
year, we see that the regional
house price median rose by
10 per cent.
If one looks at those local
government areas where
population increases were
highest, we see Greater
Geelong attracted a net 6195
more residents in 2016/17,
with the median house price
rising 8.7 percent. Ballarat’s
population surged by 1921,
and the house median rose
5.0 per cent. Greater Baw
Baw’s population increase
was 1356, and the median
was up 9.0 per cent, while in
Mitchell, 1163 new residents
saw the median up by 8.6
percent.
In all these cases, the an-
nual median increase meas-
ured six months later rose
again, as it eventually did in
Greater Bendigo, despite the
median price falling by 3.7
per cent during the time that
1834 new people moved into
the area.
Population shift can be a
factor in changing median
house prices, but it is certain-
ly not the only determinant.

Devils, Cobras Derby Preview

Saturday 14 July, 2pm
IT’S the talk of the town,
and why not!
This Saturday marks an-
other chapter in the long and
colorful history between
crosstown rivals Darley and
Bacchus Marsh.
The Devils are the reigning
premiers and play host to the
ladder leading Cobras who’ll
be keen to atone for their dis-
appointing one-point loss at
home, back in Round one.
A monster crowd is expect-
ed to converge on Darley
Park to witness this highly
anticipated Round 12 return
leg of the home and away
season.
While winning is not the be
all and end all for both clubs
this Saturday, bragging
rights are at stake and so too
the crucial four points as the
make-up of the league lad-
der continues to take shape,
en route to the finals.
The questions are circling.
Can the Devils kick a win-
ning score to upset the
Cobras? Will the Cobras
rampant forward line be too
much for the Devils defence?
The answers lie in waiting.
Darley Football Manager
Craig Baker is well aware of
where both teams are at.
“We’ve beaten them the last
three times, that has to give
us some hope,” he said.
Bacchus Marsh coach Travis
Hodgson said the club was
really looking forward to the

game.
“We can bring the best
out in each other, Round
one was probably the game
of the year. They’ve had a
tough week, but we respect
their ability to find some-
thing with their backs to the
wall.”

ables, whose outcomes are
likely to play significant
roles in determining the
result.
1. THE MENTAL ASPECT
DARLEY will need a strong
belief within the playing
group to overcome the form
side of the competition with-
out star midfielders Brian
Graham (knee) and Heath
Scotland (susp). Although
the Devils got the job done
in Round one without Scot-
land, his absence is almost
certain to have an impact
on the group’s belief given
they’ll also be missing Dylan
Reid (hamstring), Dan Roy
(knee), Leigh Spiteri (knee)
and Ryan Closter (retired)
from their opening clash.
BACCHUS MARSH on the
other hand, have their own
set of demons to deal with.
The Cobras have been put
to the sword in their recent
trips to Darley Park. Add a
50-point Grand Final loss
into the mix and the one-
point loss at home in Round
one, they’ve a bit to prove
themselves. The Cobras
coughed up a 30-point lead
from the 20-minute mark of
the third term in that open-
ing round, to snatch defeat
from the jaws of victory.
There can be no denying
that the team who performs
better ‘above the shoulders’
will go a long way to secur-
ing the points.
2. THE MATCH-UPS
The match ups are mouth-
watering. They truly set the
landscape for an unmissable
clash. I’ve listed a few to
think about. Some likely and
some I’d like to see:
Zeestraten (Darley) to
Speight (BM) - can’t wait
for this one. Zeestraten took
the points in their first meet.
Speight (26 goals) has been a
super forward for the Cobras
all year highlighting just
how important Ziggy’s shut
down role was in the Devils
Round one win.
Leonard (Darley) to Owen
(BM) - The Devils #1 key
defender is almost certain
to go to the Cobras #1 target
forward Jake Owen. Leon-
ard and Owen have both
enjoyed excellent seasons.
Owen (26 goals) has been the
go to man for the Cobras all
year and has yet to let them
down. Given the high for-
wards influence this year,
Leonard will have his work
cut out if the Cobras mid-
field gets on top.
Hanson (Darley) / Ellis
(Darley) to Willits (BM) -
Cobras leading goalkicker
Aaron Willits (34 goals) has
been the damaging lead
up forward of the competi-
tion. While Ellis looks the
likely match-up for Willits,
the Devils aren’t bereft of
options. Mark Hanson com-
petes well, runs hard and
could match it with Willits
while Ellis could be used
forward to help post a win-
ning score for the Devils. It’s
six of one, half a dozen of
the other there. Willits plays
deep, when he wins the
footy there’s often a score.
The Devils back six will be
tested, they’ll be needing
plenty of help from each
other and will be counting
on some two-way running
from their midfield.
Angwin (BM) / Owen (BM)
to Edwards (Darley) - This
match-up is huge. Devils
key forward Jake Edwards is
their most experienced play-
er and potentially their most
dangerous. Edwards influ-
ence will be determined on
the effectiveness of his sup-
ply. If the Darley half backs
and mids are able to hit Ed-
wards up on the lead, it could
spell danger for Angwin and
the Cobras. If Edwards gets
off the leash, Owen could go
back depending on the state
of the game.

evitable task of finding the
right match up for Darley
captain Shane Page. It won’t
be easy given Page’s license
across half back. If the Co-
bras are on top of their game,
they won’t have anything to
worry about but if they’re
not and the Devils are in it, I
suspect it will be Page that’s
causing the headaches.

at the hands of East Point in
Ballarat last Saturday.

team, having it drilled down our throat by Trav the boys understood

on their home deck at Mad-
dingley Park last Saturday.
The margin was as little as
four points at the seven-min-
ute mark of the third term in
breezy conditions that tested
the best and worst of both
teams armoury.
Coach Travis Hodgson was
frustrated with the wasteful
Cobras, especially in front of
goal.

portunities, they scored
their goals too easily which
kept them in the contest, “

suggested there may well be

Daniel Burton was again
dominant in the ruck. His
hit outs to advantage to find
Harrison King and Tyson
Shea on the run and the in-
fluence that had, should not
be ignored. It was centre
clearance by definition.
Hamish Coulton (three
goals), Declan Phyland (one
goal) and Billy Griffiths pro-
vided alternate avenues to
goal. Their clean hands, abil-
ity to read the play and un-
selfishness help spread the
forward line and protect the
space. When they weren’t
hitting the scoreboard they
were finding the big three
on repeat, Willits, Owen and
Speight.
The end result put simply...

Cross Country last Saturday was held around the Market Garden Track at Rupert Vance
Moon Reserve, Bacchus Marsh. The icy cold winds and showers deterred many of our
athletes, with only a small group of devoted members in attendance.
Myah Estlick was the sole competitor in the 1000 metre event. The Under 9 & 10 athletes
competed over a 1500m distance with less than one second separating Riley Rodgers and
Nicholas Ide, while Mackenzie Estlick crossed the finish line first for the girls and Sarah
Burton in 2nd place. The Under 11 & 12 athletes tackled the 2000m course with Xavier
Goodman and Elise Cook recording wins. The Open age athletes covered 3kms with Bridget
Henthorn recording the fastest time and Zane Rich, running a big PB, crossing the finish line
first for the boys.
This Saturday, athletes will return to Lady Northcote Recreation Camp, Rowsley for the
Centre Cross Country meet.

Motoring for kids, and their families

In the late 1950s, throughout Victoria,
small boys and girls would race home
from school to watch one of their favourite
programs on the family Black and White
television. The half-hour show, broadcast
on Channel 7 was the Adventures of Ca-
sey Jones and the Cannonball Express Steam
Locomotive. Alan Hale played the Chief
Engineer/Driver and was the lead actor
sharing the limelight with the real star,
the classic black Sierra No. 3 steam train. The
variety of adventures the crew shared as
this train travelled America’s Mid-West,
were a source of inspiration and educa-
tion for these youngsters. Note, Alan Hale
later on, in the 1960s, played the role of the
Skipper on the Gilligan’s Island TV series.
Earlier this year, I was excited and filled
with trepidation and an equal dose of nos-
talgia as I motored up to Maldon, Central
Victoria, to write a story about one of the
special steam trains which carries tourists
on the Victorian Tourist Railway, between
Castlemaine and Maldon. I had put a re-
quest to the Head Office, requesting an
interview with a driver or Head Engineer
and Mick Compagnoni put his hand up.
Mick is the Workshop Supervisor/Chief
Engineer and based at the Maldon Work-
shops. I met him on a quiet day, when his
other three assistants had departed.
Mick’s baby is a J Class steam locomotive,
no. J 549, built 1953 and which entered rail-
way traffic 1954. This is Victoria’s youngest
going steam train and was constructed at
the Vulcan Foundry, Lancashire, England.
Specs: 70ft long, 9ft wide and 14ft high.
Weighs 112 tons, 8cwt, that is fuelled up
and ready to go!
Mick says the loco was the latest 19th Cen-
tury technology, because she was built
after WW2.
Surprisingly to me, the fuel is not wood,
but there are many options of oil (mix-
tures). The best fuel is hydraulic oil with
10% old diesel. Early in the interview Mick
was keen to show and explain a very im-
portant and unique feature: in the many
diverse oilways and channels, twisted

to act as a siphon to lubricate the many oil
journals and in some cases the wool acts as
capillary attraction to pull the oil further
into the oilways. Constant supervision is
needed on these to provide constant lubri-
cation for such often heavy moving parts.
He also explained that the twin red smoke
baffles /directors on either side push the
smoke upwards and away to give the driv-
er a better view of the track ahead.
Mick is well qualified and achieved an
Associate Diploma of Mechanical Engi-
neering, which allows him to be in charge
of such heavy equipment. He is not ac-
tually the Driver, but by necessity, after
having performed routine maintenance
at the workshops will trundle it along the
rails for a short test. When I had made my
appointment with Mick, I had harboured
some naïve thoughts that maybe he would
let me take the engine for a short drive
in the yards. …….. In reality, apart from
that idea probably being illegal, the J 549 Steam locomotive J 549 with some admirers.

some major replacements carried out. We
did, however, climb the steps high into the
cabin and Mick explained in detail all the
controls, the dials, switches and how the
firebox operated. I climbed into the seat
adjacent the right-hand window, picturing
Casey Jones in the TV show, driving the
locomotive and giving the steam whistle
a long warning blast. Only for Mick to ad-
vise me that in the USA, the driver is on
the right, but in Australia the driver sits at
the left-hand window.
We completed the tour of the workshop,
Mick showing me a number of interest-
ing worn out engine parts. Some of these
units were quite spectacular and I asked
for a souvenir but was told that they are all
part of instructional open days for visitor
tours.
Mick has told me that his favourite J 549 is
running and a second steam train, K 190, a
slightly smaller loco, which runs on coal, will
share the journeys. This train built in 1943 is
painted red with yellow pinstriping.
The Goldfields has trains running each
Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, between
Maldon and Castlemaine and return. Mick in cabin of J 549.
