Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace them

with modern buildings? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

The city where I live has a lot of historical buildings, but many of them were
destroyed or deteriorated by time force. In my opinion the history must be preserved because it
is very important to know our past and the modern buildings sometimes brings some ambiental
issues with them. Both reasons will be best explained in the following essay.
Probably, it is expensive to preserve historic constructions, although, the value of
history is immeasurable. As an 19th century book tells a lot about the people that lived in that
age, an old building says a lot of our past and culture. In the street where I lived when I was a
child, there was a centenary big house with an incredible architecture. Nowadays, houses like
that are not builded anymore. The centenary house was part of the history of city and, speciality,
part of the history of the rich people of old times. Today this house is a big edifice and has no
more past to tell. Above all, it is also necessary to emphasize that the culture and the history of
humanity are protected by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Furthermore, many constructions are being made just because of economical issues
and brings a lot of ambiental and social impacts. Some of the big buildings constructed near to
the beach of my city have being contaminating the water with their dejects since they were
builded. Moreover, the most recognized public policy doctrines believes that high buildings are
harmful for the preservation of the coastal landscapes. I am not saying that the modern
constructions are not necessary, because with the increase of the population more buildings are
needed. As also, the most recent laws are more rigid about this kind of construction.

However, I think that the historic constructions should be preserved, and should not be
replaced by modern buildings, because the preservation of the history and the culture are very
important human rights. As well, modern buildings sometimes brings negative ambiental
impacts. In fact, it is possible to build without so much impact, but, in my opinion, modern
buildings only should be constructed in free areas, without affecting the historic buildings.
