with Robots

DO'S
and
DON'TS
Foreword
Recent advances in the field of robotics have created significant opportunities for
manufacturing companies to perform arc welding processes using this advanced form of
automation. Robots currently produced by the major manufacturers of industrial automation
equipment can be safely and effectively applied to a wide variety of welding and cutting
processes.

Robot automation is not substantially different from other types of automation equipment in
that it must be properly designed and maintained to provide the greatest benefit. However,
robots do exhibit certain special features and characteristics that should be understood by
potential users of the technology.

This pamphlet is designed to provide the novice as well as the seasoned user of industrial
robots with information that can promote and expand successful use of robots in GMAW and
FCAW applications. By utilizing robots for arc welding, manufacturing companies can expand
the use of welding processes in the manufacture of their products.

Proper evaluation of the intended robot application is critical for its success.
An analysis of all manufacturing variables should be performed before the
acquisition of capital equipment.
Robot automation forces additional quality discipline into all upstream
manufacturing processes. Users of robot welding systems have discovered
many part and process characteristics that may not have been evident prior to
automation. Re-examine the following items carefully and thoroughly:

Sub-component fabrication
Part fit-up
Weld process parameters
Assembly sequence
Material handling
