END SEMESTER EXAMINATION
B. E. (3rd year)Semester-VI (2017/18) Course Code: UCH601
Course Name: Chemical reaction
Engineering-II
May, 22nd, 2017 Monday, 02.00 - 05.00 p.m
Time: 3 Hours, M. Marks: 100 Name Of Faculty: Dr. Sanghamitra

Note: Attempt all questions
Assume missing data, if any, suitably

Q1. Derive and discuss dispersion model for non-ideal flow. I

Q.2 A large tank (1020 litres) is used as a gas liquid contactor. Gas bubbles up through the
vessel and out the top, liquids flows in one part and out the other at 5 litre per sec . A pulse of
tracer (M=150gm) is injected at the liquid inlet and measured at the outlet as shown in the
figure, and Cpuise = 75% of C
15
a) Is this a properly done experiment?
b) If so find the liquid fraction in the vessel.
c) Determine the E curve for the liquid.

Q3. The catalytic reaction A 4R is run at 3.2 atm and 117°C in a plug flow reactor which
contain 0.01 kg of catalyst and uses a feed consisting of the partially conver -d product of 20
litres/h of pure unreacted A. The results are as follows: 15
Run 1 2 3 4
CAin,mol/liter 0.100 0.080 0.060 0.040
CAout,mol/liter 0.084 0.070 0.055 0.038

Find a rate equation to represent this reaction.

Q4. In hydrodemethanation of toluene, toluene is adsorbed on the surface and reacts with the
hydrogen in the gas phase to produce benzene adsorbed on the surface and methane in the
gas phase. Benzene is then desorbed from the surface. Consider the reaction as surface rate
controlling find the mechanism and rate equation. 15

Q5.Discuss the steps for designing a Fluidized bed reactor using K-L model for BFB. 10

Qb. A batch of spherical solids of uniform size is treated by gas. Solid is converted to give
nonflaking product according to the shrinking core model of unchanging size. Conversion is
about 7/8 for a reaction time of 1 hour. Conversion is complete in 2 hours. What mechanism is
controlling?
10

Q7. Derive the time-

conversion-radius relationship for shrinking-core model for spherical
particles of unchanging size when diffusion through gas film controls.
10

Q8.
Calculate the time needed to burn to completion particles o graphite (Ro=5 mm, pi3= 2.2
gm/c.c, k= 20 cm/sec) in an 8% oxygen stream. For the high gas velocity used assume that film
diffusion does not offer any resistance. Reaction temperature is 900°C.
