Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Creating graphs to show linear relation between height and weight.
Content Area: Statistics Lab
Grade Level(s): 11- 12 Grade
Content Standard Addressed: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSS.ID.B.6.C - Fit a linear function for a scatter plot that
suggests a linear association.

Technology Standard Addressed: Standard 2: Teaching, learning, and Assessment

Element 2.3 Authentic Learning

Selected Technology Tool: Microsoft Excel

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Microsoft Excel is available to use on any platform. As long as the
student has access to a computer with UDL adaptations, then there are options for closed captions, adapted
keyboards for those with cognitive processing disorders, and large screens for visually impaired. There can be
noise cancelling headphones available for those who work best without distractions.

Lesson idea implementation: Students start off as a class and then break off into groups. First they will
measure and collect data of height and weight of students in class as a class. Data is recorded and analyzed in
Microsoft Excel. The teacher is on hand to step through the directions of the labs as the students work in
groups. The students will graph the height versus the weight of each student as a coordinate pair on a graph
and make a best-fit linear line. This lab should take approximately 45 minutes.
This data gathered in this lab can be used for a variety of extension exercises in Statistics. First, scatter plots
and proper graphing techniques. Next, best-line fit and positive or negative correlation. Later, exploration
into regression and equation writing is added. All of these lessons are built upon each other and are utilized
from one data set. Since each lesson builds upon another, it will be necessary that the students have check
points in their work so that they have correct work to start the next lesson.

Reflective Practice: Microsoft Excel is used in college and the workplace. By starting the students learning
Excel and understanding graphs and data manipulation with this technology tool, they are prepared for future
tasks. Students will continue to use MS Excel to make connections between data points and construct
analysis of mathematical relationships throughout the year.
