EXTENSIVE SURVEY PROJECT OLD TANK PROJECT

INTRODUCTION

1.1. OVERVIEW

The Restoration project of an existing tank is proposed. The aim of

the Project is to survey an existing tank and to restore its existing capacity to meet the
required demand by Raising the existing Bund height suitably.

The tank selected for the project is Old tank at Budarashingi

village on the outskirt of Hubballi taluka in Dharwad district. Main beneficiaries of the
project are small and regional farmers of Budarasingi village. There is a high demand
from the villagers which cannot be met with the existing capacity of the Tank.

After the survey of the Tank it is found that the capacity of the Tank
can be increased suitably to meet the required demand.

1.2. SURVEY WORK

For the completion of any old tank project the various works
required to be carried out

1) Surveying and data collection.

2) Analysis of data and survey results.
3) Engineering, environmental, economic and social aspects.
4) Execution and maintenance of the project

The survey work was done for getting relevant details with
Reference to the following,

1) Cross section of existing bund.

2) Capacity contouring
3) Details of existing Bund
4) Details of Sluice gate
5) Design of canal
6) Details of existing waste weir

1.3. LOCATION

The Tank is situated at Budarshingi village on the outskirt of Hubballi

taluka in Dharwad district. The site is located at 11km from Hubballi.

1.4 WATER STORAGE CAPACITY OF THE EXISTING

TANK

The capacity of the tank is finalized from the following considerations

1) Availability of water .(Based on Hydrology)

2) Requirement of command. (Based on Water Planning)
3) Storage capacity at site. (Based on Topography)

Areas of successive contours are measured using autocaed software or by constructing

squares.
If A1, A2, A3 … An, are the areas of successive contours,
H being the contour interval, then by Prismoidal rule. The storage capacity can
be calculated.

1.7. VARIOUS LEVELS OF BUND

Fig. 1.1 Cross Section of Bund

The maximum water level (MWL), to which the water will rise in the reservoir during
ordinary operation condition is called Normal pool level. The normal level is

DEPT. OF CIVIL ENGG, AGMRCET VARUR Page 5

EXTENSIVE SURVEY PROJECT OLD TANK PROJECT

corresponding to the level of the spillway crest, or to the spillway gates. The level to
which water rises during the flood is known as Maximum water level. The lowest
operation to which the water in the reservoir is to be drawn under ordinary operating
conditions is called minimum pool level (MDDL/LWL)
The volume of water stored between the normal pool level and the minimum
pool level is known as the useful storage (live storage). The volume of water below the
minimum pool level is known as the dead storage and is not useful under ordinary
operating conditions. The volume of water stored between the normal pool level and
maximum level corresponding to a flood is surcharge storage, and is usually
uncontrolled. The term bank storage and valley storage are referred to the volume of
water stored in the previous formations of the river bank and the soil above it. Such
storage depends upon the geological conditions of the river banks. The bank storage
increase the capacity of the reservoir above that indicates by the elevation- storage
curve.
Since all RL’S are assumed. After assuming stability check is for the bund is
done for the overturning and sliding by all the pressure acting on the bund like
horizontal and vertical pressure , self-weight of bund, uplift pressure from which
overturning and resisting moment of the bund.

As we done the stability analysis of the bund and we got safe against overturning
and safe against sliding.

1.8. DETAILS OF SLUICE GATE

Sluice has to be designed for the tank to let out the water in the respective canals.
The discharge through the sluice has been fixed. Considering the discharge through
3
canal i.e. 0.20 m /s the sluice is to be designed.

Provided 2 numbers of gated Sluices at the sill level of bund at an RL of

+589.205m and provided pipe of diameter 30cm and the outlet with a tower head is
proposed to be provided.

1.9 CANAL

Canal project is a part of irrigation science which deals with the artificial
carriage of water from the reservoir to the required field.

DEPT. OF CIVIL ENGG, AGMRCET VARUR Page 6

EXTENSIVE SURVEY PROJECT OLD TANK PROJECT

Canal is an artificial channel constructed to carry water from river or reservoir

for various purposes such as irrigation, power generation, navigation etc. in general,
canals are trapezoidal in cross section. The canals are usually designated according to
the purposes for which they are used.

EXTENSIVE SURVEY PROJECT OLD TANK PROJECT

CONCLUSION

In this project, it is proposed to restore or increase the capacity of an existing

tank, thereby increasing the command area. The tank is located near Budarshingi
village. All the necessary data were collected from the site of existing tank. Contouring
of water spread area and proposed submerged area is done.

The tank can be raised to a higher elevation to meet the Irrigation demand of the
d/s command area. Basin has sufficient yield to serve the command area. The design of
the tank is safe in all the aspects.

Hence, it is concluded that the dam height can be raised up to required level.
There is also a scope of extending the canal.
