In October 1972 a rugby team had to travel to Chile for a game, so due to their limited resources
they rented a plane to the army.
The flight they were on was 571. They took off on a Thursday.
The flight was going to surround the Andes on the south and west to get to Chile, but accidentally
the pilot turned north flying towards the Andes mountain range in Argentina
When the plane started to descend the pilot realized that he had made a mistake and decided to
rise again but the plane did not have enough power to climb so fast, one of the wings hit a
mountain and the plane collapsed leaving only the cabin and a part of the passenger area.
Of the 45 people on the aircraft, 13 died in the accident or shortly thereafter, another 4 died the
next morning and on the eighth day the last woman in the group died.
The tenth day they realize that the rescue teams are no longer looking for them, and also that there
was no food, so they decided to eat those who died.
Unsafely they begin to eat the flesh of their dead friends leaving practically only the bones.
After that, a group managed to survive 72 days in extremely poor conditions and also thanks to
the flesh of their companions.
After that, 3 survivors were encouraged to leave in search of help, until they managed to find a
Chilean farmer who managed to communicate with the Chilean Air Force, two months and ten
days after the accident.
In my opinion it is probably that no one would have survived if they had not decided to go out
and seek help. Never give up.
This is known as the miracle of the Andes
