PREPLAN

A Pre-assessment (an observation in the labs):

The children entered excitedly with high energy. The little boy in red asks
about alligators while building with blocks with the teacher. He showed little
interest in the blocks. The girl in ponytails walks around the room carefully with her
painting, she already knows that the painting will be messy until dry. When the
teacher asks the little boy in blue, if he can help her rebuild the blocks that have
fallen, he shakes his head and walks away. Looks like a lack of social skills and
manners. All of the kids showed initial interest in the tent that was set up in the
room, they all wanted to go inside, but none of them stayed very long when they
realized that it was boring inside without any toys. I heard a girl yell, “he’s biting
me” which indicates a social skill violation in both children. The little girl in the light
pink dress tried to set up her camp chair, but didn’t understand; this is something
that could be taught to improve motor skills. Another girl keeps yelling, “lets go
outside” so that she can be heard and make it happen. But those that don’t want to
go outside lag behind and keep playing on their own.

Kids are curious about the piñata sheep that the teachers are carrying
around. Elaina is a little selfish and needs to learn to share. She has taken all of the
little lizards. She has given them funny voices, and personalities and plays with them
climbing a tree- she is a creative girl. The other little girl at the snack corner seems
to be perfectly happy to sit by herself eating the orange. She is not at all phased by
the other children and all the other toys. One girl in purple hides her favorite toy
under the table, maybe so that she can play with it later.

In the music center the girls each mimic the music they have heard “boom
chic, boom” There are several hat show interest in learning about instruments and
making music. When the teacher asks what their band names are- they show some
creativity; “Go, go unicorn” and “pop rocks”. All of the children are in a different
stage of learning to be social. Some still enjoy seclusion/ self play and some like to
be with a group. I noticed however that those in groups play still play by themselves
but next to the others, without much interaction among them. Once the teacher
brings toys and books back into the tent they again are excited to be inside and stay
a little longer. In the end the little girl with long brown hair asks kindly to pet the
guinea pig. Once she shows interest in the guinea pig, a few other children gather
around in awe.

The Topic:

There were a few good topics the children seemed interested in from the pre-
assessment: Animals, pets, and music. But, I would like to choose Pets!
