VAGINA VESTINULAR GLANDS

 Musculomembranous  Aka Bartholin glands

 From ulva to uterus  0.5-1cm in diameter
 Upper portion – mullerian ducts  Inferior to the vestibular bulbs and deep to the
 Lower portion – urogenital sinus inferior ends of bulbocavernosus muscle on
 Anteriorly –bladder and urethra (vesicovaginal either side of vaginal opening
septum)  Ducts are 1.5-2cm long and open distal to the
 Posteriorly – lower portion of vagina and hymenal ring at 5 and 7 o’clock
rectume (rectovaginal septum)  Trauma or infection – cyst/abscess
 Upper fourth of the vagina – the recto-
uterinepouch / cul-de-sac of douglas VESTIBULE
 From urogenital membrane
VAGINAL OPENING AND HYMEN  Almond-shaped area
 Rimmed distally by hymen or its remnants  The external surface of the hymen medially,
 Elastic and collagenous connective tissue clitoral frenulum anteriorly, fourchette
 Stratified squamous epith. posteriorly
 Imperforate hymen – vaginal orifice occlusion  Six openings: urethra, vagina, 2 bartholin
 Hymen is torn at several sites during 1st coitus ducts, 2 skene glands
and tampons used – hymenal caruncles  Posterior portion of the vestibule between the
fourchette and the vaginal opening is called
VESTIBULAR BULBS the fossa navicularis (nulliparous)
 Inferiorly at the midline of the vaginal opening
and upward the clitoris EXTERNAL GENERATIVE ORGANS
 Anterior extensions merge in the midline,  Clitoris
below the clitoral body  Female erogenous organ
 During childbirth – may be injured and may  Erectile homologue of the penis and is located
even rupture to create a vulvar hematoma beneath the prepuce and above the urethra
 Embryologically – corpus spongiosum of  <2cm in length and composed of glans, corpus
penis body, 2 crura
 Almond-shaped aggregations of veins
 3-4 cm long, 1-2 cm wide, 0.5-1 cm  Labia minora
 Beneath the bulbocavernousus muscle on  Connective tissue with many vessels, elastin
either side of the vestibule fibers, and some smooth muscle fibers
 Supplied variety of nerve endings. Sensitive
URETHRAL OPENING  Stratified squamous epith. – outer surface and
 Lower teo thirds of the urethra lie immediately lateral
above the anterior vaginal wall  Medial – stratifiend squamous keratinized
 Urethral opening or meatus Is in midline of
vestibule, 1-1.5 cm below pubic arch, and
short distance above vaginal opening

PARAURETHRAL GLANDS
 Collectively an arborization of glands whose Anterior abdominal wall
ducts open at inferior aspect of the urethra
 Two largest: Skene glands (ducts lie near Innervation
urethral meatus)  Intercostal nerves T7-11
 Inflammation and obstruction – urethral  Subcostal nerv T12
diverticulum formation  Iliohypogastric & ilioinguinal L1
