PART-A: FUNDAMENTALS OF COMPUTERS
Unit Wise Guidelines
Note: The following contents are needed to be taught under different underlined heads in addition to the contents mentioned in the syllabus.
Unit 1: Basic Concepts
Data Representation: Binary number system and its relevance; Conversion of numbers among Binary, Octal, Hexa and Decimal; Binary representation of integers and real numbers; Sign and magnitude representation; Complement representation; Performing simple arithmetic on Binary numbers; Understanding of data represented by BCD, ASCII and ISCII.
Unit 2: Essential Components of Computer
Operating System: Types of OS and the purpose served by various types. Overview of Operating System: Components of OS: Control program, system service programs and utility programs. Application Software: Classification into General purpose and special (or specific) purpose; Acquisition: Ready-to-use, customized and Tailor-made; Public domain: shareware and freeware.
Unit 3: Information System
Meaning: Meaning of information, information system and its types. Type of Information System: Types of information systems: TPS, DSS, EIS, MIS, OAS. Types from Functional Point of view: Financial and Accounting Information System, Human Resource Development and Management System, Manufacturing or Production Information System, Marketing Information System etc. The purpose, features and cycle of these systems. Basic of Data Arrangement and Access: Data arrangement and access for specific information needs; Data Access methods and their usage.
Unit 4: Database System
Databases- The Modern Approach: Entity-Relationship(ER) Model-Its concepts and ER diagram for an example reality; Relational Data Model (RDM) - Its concepts, constraints and Relational database design using ER-to-Relational Mapping; Normalization of relational databases (up to three normal forms). Use at least two examples realities to prepare ER design and RDM design for each (Refer Annexure III: Case 1 and Case 2).
Unit 5: Networks: LAN, WAN, Wireless Network
Introduction to Networking: Meaning, Features and Types of Networks - by Scale (LAN, MAN WAN etc); by Org Scope (Intranet Extranet, Internet); by Technology - Communication Media (Wireless, Wired), Protocol (Ethernet, Internet Protocol Suit, Asynchronous Transfer Mode(ATM); by Topology: Common layout-Star, Linear Bus, Mesh, Ring etc) and Overlays Network. Types of Servers and their importance in network. Distributed computing, Peer to peer computing and Client-Server computing – Two-Tier and Three-Tier; Basic Hardware of Networks-NIU, NIC, Repeaters, Hubs, Bridges, Switches, Routers, Firewalls etc
Unit 6: Introduction to Internet
Basic Internet Terminology: Modem, IP address, Browser and their types, Proxy Server, Internet Telephony, Routers, Gateways, ISP-different types, Bandwidth, Website, Blog, Telnet, Internet Services - their types and importance. Search Engines: Meaning, Categories and Popular Search Engines. General Guidelines PART – B: COMPUTER BASED INFORMATION SYSTEM General Guidelines Part – B: Computer Based Information System : No Change
PART C: INTRODUCTION TO ESSENTIAL TOOLS
General Guidelines Microsoft Office 2010 or Open Office package will be used for word-processing, spread sheet, and database management system. Part C will be of 50 marks divided into practical examination of 40 marks and work book in the form of Internal Assessment of 10 marks. Marks Distribution for Practical Examination of 40 Marks: Refer Annexure I: Evaluation Sheet Machine Handling : 1 Mark Work Processing : 6 Marks Excel Spreadsheet Functions & Application : 18 Marks Access Database : 15 Marks
Unit Wise Guidelines
Unit 1: Word Processing 1. No Change in contents of Word Processing for Practical Examination. 2. Refer Annexure I: Evaluation Sheet – (Part 1) for Marks distribution of Practical based on Word Processing.
Unit 2: Spreadsheet And Its Business Applications.
1. No Change in contents of this unit.
Unit 3: Generally Used Spread Sheet Functions:
1. Refer Annexure II: For list of generally used spread sheet functions to be covered (Total 42 Functions under different categories). Note: i. Following functions have been deleted from old list: AVEDEV and FACT. ii. Four new functions have been added in new list: NOT, FV, DB and SLN. 2. Refer Annexure I: Evaluation Sheet – (Or Part of Part 3), for Marks distribution of generally used spread sheet functions.
Unit 4: Creating Spreadsheet In The Following Areas
1. Preparation of complex Payroll Statement (Sample Papers will be distributed in scheduled Workshop at SRCC in the Third or Fourth week of November 2011). 2. Refer Annexure I: Evaluation Sheets – (Part 2 and Part 3), for Marks distribution of application part based on Loan & Lease statement, Ratio Analysis, Graphical representation of data, Payroll statements and Frequency distribution and its statistical parameters.
Unit 5: Database Software
1. No Change in contents of Access Database but following points must be covered for Practical Examination: Setting Relation Lookup Properties Validation Rule including constraints across fields Creating a Form Report (Based on Grouping) Query (From Multiple Tables based on 2 to 3 conditions) 2. Refer Annexure I: Evaluation Sheet – (Part 4) for Marks distribution of One Practical based on Access Database.
