1.0 INTRODUCTION
Amec Foster Wheeler Environment and Infrastructure (Amec Foster Wheeler) has developed a
two dimensional steady-state seepage model to estimate infiltration rates for a subsurface
Infiltration Gallery at the proposed Lions Gate Waste Water Treatment Plant (LGWWTP) in North
Vancouver, B.C. This memorandum is an update to the August 08, 2016 technical memorandum
prepared by Amec Foster Wheeler (Amec Foster Wheeler, 2016).
The current memorandum includes background information, methodology used and updates
made to the August 8, 2016 technical memorandum. The results of the seepage analysis are
presented in this memorandum and conclusion and recommendations are made.
The modelled underground infiltration gallery is a system of chambers that serves to evenly
distribute stormwater across the designated infiltrative surface. As a consequence of the discrete
nature of precipitation events and depending on rainfall intensity, the infiltrative surface may not
be able to infiltrate all of the stormwater as it is discharged from the chambers. Under this

scenario, some mounding of the stormwater can occur temporarily over the footprint of the
infiltration gallery.
Our understanding is that for the current project a use of infiltration system similar to the
StormTech MC-3500 is considered. Figure 1 shows an underground infiltration system
constructed of StormTech chambers and a technical brochure describing StormTech MC-3500 is
attached to this memorandum as Appendix B.
Based on our understanding the following inputs are to be used for the system design:
The subsurface profile consists of about 2.3 m of fill material, underlain by approximately 5.3 m
of sand and gravel, which in turn is underlain by about 1.3 m of silt and sand. The silt and sand
layer is underlain by a 1.6 m sand layer, which is underlain by approximately 0.6 m thick clayey
silt. Similar to the August 8, 2016 technical memorandum, for the modelling purposes, the clayey
silt layer is considered to form an impermeable boundary. Although, the lateral extent and
thickness of the clayey silt impermeable boundary across the west half of the footprint of the
proposed infiltration gallery is unknown, the model assumes that the clayey silt impermeable layer
is continuous across the footprint of the infiltration gallery.
Figure 4: Interpreted Subsurface Conditions Between Boreholes SH12-02 and SH13-09 (Golder
Associates Ltd, 2013)
It should be noted that based on the 2012 & 2013 geotechnical site investigations the gradation
of the fill decreases with depth (fining downwards). Consequently, permeability of the fill likely
decreases with depth resulting in potentially reduced infiltration rates from the gallery.
Ground elevation at the borehole locations (at the east half of the footprint of the infiltration gallery)
ranges between approximately +2.6m to +2.8 m. The groundwater table is at an average of +1.0m
elevation (estimated from a measured range of 0.7 m to 1.4 m above mean sea level).
4.0 SEEP/W
The seepage analyses for the current study were conducted using two-dimensional finite element
software SEEP/W, developed by GEO- SLOPE International, Ltd (GEO-SLOPE 2007). SEEP/W

is a general seepage analysis program that models both saturated and unsaturated flow using
soil water characteristic curves and user defined boundary conditions.
A single MC-3500 chamber geometry taken from the technical brochure (Appendix B) is shown
on Figure 5. This geometry was replicated in the CAD format.
Using the chamber geometry, both design alternatives listed in Section 2.0 and interpreted
subsurface conditions shown on Figure 4, two models representing four rows of chambers and
seven rows of chambers were developed in SEEP W. Figure 6 shows resultant geometry for the
seven rows of chambers infiltration gallery.

Conductivity functions were utilized from the SEEP/W library to approximate seepage in the
unsaturated upper gravel and fill layers.
It should be noted that in the absence of actual (measured) hydraulic conductivities, the values
shown in Table 1 were approximated based on Hazen empirical estimates and published typical
values. No in-situ site-specific data was available at the time of this seepage analysis, Hydraulic
conductivities estimated from the Hazen empirical relationship are order of magnitude estimates
and only be used for a first order estimate of the infiltration rates. Field permeability testing should
be completed and the seepage model should be revised accordingly during the final design.
The range of hydraulic conductivities assigned to the fill (1x10-5 to 1x10-6 m/sec) reflects the fining
downward gradation of this material. Therefore, the upper bound hydraulic conductivity (1x10-
5
m/sec) is considered to be an estimate of the hydraulic conductivity at the top of the fill and the
lower bound hydraulic conductivity (1x10-6m/sec) is considered to be an estimate of the hydraulic
conductivity at the bottom of the fill.
There are two fundamental types of finite element seepage analyses, steady-state and
transient. In the steady-state seepage type of analysis, it is assumed that water pressures
and water flow rates reached a steady value and will be in that state for a long time. This
type of analysis does not consider how long it takes to achieve a steady condition. In many
cases where the geotechnical problem is exposed to nature with its cyclical conditions, it
is possible that a steady state will never be reached.
The rainfall events usually have more of transient nature unless they last long enough to be
approximated with the steady-state solution. It is reasonable to assume that the steady-state like
conditions are likely to develop under the following conditions:
For the current model, the chambers are assumed to be filled with water and remain saturated
such that steady-state seepage is on-going. This does not necessarily accurately represent the
actual seepage conditions that would develop during or after a specific rainfall event. If a more
accurate characterization of the infiltrative capacity of the fill or underlying sand and gravel to
infiltrate rainfall events is required, a review of rainfall intensity and runoff records is required.
9.0 RESULTS
The total head contours and water flow directions for the long-term seepage conditions for the
seven row of chambers infiltration system are presented on Figures 7 and 8 corresponding to fill
hydraulic conductivity of 1x10-5 and 1x10-6 m/sec respectively. A full set of the graphical results
for all conditions analyzed is provided at the end of this memo as Appendix C.

The total flux measured at the base of all chambers (per metre length of the gallery) is summarized
in Table 2.
Table 2: Model Results Summary
The results of the analyses suggest that the estimated infiltration rates are sensitive to
permeability of the fill. Considering that this fill layer becomes more silty and clayey with the depth,
it is likely that the infiltration rates obtained with fill permeability of 1x10-6 m/sec are more
representative of actual conditions.
To obtain more accurate estimate of infiltration rates, a thorough investigation of the stratigraphy
at the footprint of the gallery and particularly the in-situ hydraulic conductivity of the materials
(especially fill) below the infiltration gallery is recommended. This investigation may not
necessarily result in more favorable infiltration rates and other measures to increase these rates
may still have to be considered.
• Remove the fill completely and backfill the excavation with a clean gravel as schematically
shown on Figure 9; or
• Partially remove the fill only beneath the infiltration chambers and back fill with clean gravel
as schematically shown on Figure 10.
It should be noted that the existing fill may need to be removed to deal with environmental
contaminant issues.

Each of these scenarios were run in the SEEP/W model. The total steady-state infiltration rates
of about 2.2 x 10-4 m3/sec and 2.0 x 10-4 m3/sec were estimated per metre length of the seven
rows of chambers and four rows of chambers galleries, respectively (regardless of the fill
permeability and whether the fill was removed partially or completely).
On the basis of the modelled flux rates and assumptions presented above, the infiltrative
capacities of each design alternative are presented in Table 3.
Table 3: Infiltrative Capacities (m3/min) for Each Design Alternative
It should be noted that the infiltration rates presented above are also affected by fluctuation of the
groundwater level. For the modelling purposes an average elevation of +1.0m was assumed;
however, as mentioned in Section 3.0, the actual groundwater levels range from +0.7m to +1.4m.
Preliminary seepage checks were carried out to determine the possible effect of the groundwater
fluctuation on the infiltration rates. The results of these preliminary checks suggest that a raise
of groundwater to an elevation of +1.4m (which represents the maximum groundwater level
elevation recorded during the earlier Golder Associates site investigations) will result in about
35% decrease of the infiltration rates presented above. If groundwater falls to an elevation of
+0.7m, this will result in a 25% increase of the infiltration rates presented above. Establishment
of groundwater monitoring program is recommended to evaluate the fluctuation of groundwater
level more accurately and to update the seepage model.
- Seven chamber infiltration rates ranged between 1.3 x 10-4 m3/sec and 3.1 x 10-5 m3/sec
(per metre length of the gallery);
- Four chambers infiltration rates ranged between 1.0 x 10-4 m3/sec and 2.0 x 10-5 m3/sec
(per metre length of the gallery);
- Estimated infiltration rates are sensitive to the hydraulic conductivity of the upper fill layer.
Considering that this fill layer is fining downwards, infiltration rates at the low end of the
ranges presented above are considered to be more representative of actual conditions;
- In absence of measured hydraulic conductivities, the values used for the current study are
approximate based on the Hazen empirical relationship and published typical values.
Hydraulic conductivities estimated from the Hazen empirical relationship are order of
magnitude estimates and only be used for a first order estimate of the infiltration rates;
- To obtain more accurate estimate of infiltration rates, a thorough investigation of the
stratigraphy at the footprint of the gallery and determination of the in-situ hydraulic
conductivity of the fill and underlying sand and gravel is strongly recommended. It should
be noted that this investigation may not necessarily result in favorable greater infiltrative
capacity, but this detailed field investigation will provide the basis for appropriate design
considerations and greater confidence in the predictive capacity of the SEEP/W model;
- If the fill below the footprint of the infiltration gallery is excavated and the excavation is
backfilled with a clean gravel, infiltration rates of 2.2 x 10-4 m3/sec and 2.0 x 10-4 m3/sec
per metre length of the seven rows of chambers and four rows of chambers galleries,
respectively, are expected;
- It is understood that the existing fill may need to be removed to deal with environmental
contaminant issues;
- The infiltration rates presented above are affected by fluctuation of the groundwater level.
For the modelling purposes an average elevation of +1.0m was assumed; however the
actual groundwater levels may range from +0.7m to +1.4m. Preliminary seepage checks
show that a raise of groundwater to an elevation of +1.4m will result in about 35% decrease
of the infiltration rates presented above. If groundwater falls to an elevation of +0.7m, this
will result in a 25% increase of the infiltration rates. A groundwater monitoring program is
recommended to evaluate the fluctuation of groundwater level more accurately and to
update the seepage model; and,
- The current model assumes that the chambers are filled with water and remain saturated
in a steady-state condition. This is not representative of seepage conditions that would
develop during or after a rainfall event. If a more accurate characterization of the infiltrative
capacity of the fill or underlying sand and gravel to infiltrate rainfall events is required, a
review of rainfall intensity and runoff records is required.

Update of Infiltration Gallery Preliminary Seepage Modelling
August 2016
Appendix A
Amec Foster Wheeler Environment and Infrastructure Ltd. (Amec Foster Wheeler) has prepared this
technical memorandum to summarize the preliminary results of two dimensional (2D) seepage modelling
performed in order to estimate infiltration rates below the Infiltration Gallery at the proposed Lions Gate
Waste Water Treatment Plant (LGWWTP) in North Vancouver, B.C. The analysis was requested by Rick
Piccolo of Dialog Design on behalf of the Architectural Design Team.
Background Information: The Infiltration Gallery is a permanent storm water retention pond that is part
of the infrastructure that will be constructed for the LGWWTP. The geotechnical conditions in the vicinity
of the pond were characterized during 2012 & 2013 site investigations conducted by Golder Associates
Ltd. The results of these investigations are summarized in the reports contained in Appendix 8B and 8C
of the LGWWTP Project Definition Report Volume 2 Appendices (February 2014). The 2012 and 2013
Testhole Location Plan appended to this memo provides the locations of the geotechnical boreholes.
Figure 1, below, depicts the approximate location of the Infiltration Gallery in relation to the existing
boreholes.

Methodology: A seepage model was developed in SEEP/W (Geo-Slope International Ltd., 2012). First,
a 1D model examining vertical infiltration was developed, then this was extended to include 2D lateral
flow. The model stratigraphy was based on the two boreholes in close proximity to the Infiltration Gallery
(SH12-02 and SH13-09). These borehole logs, as well as the stratigraphic cross-section A-A’ (location
shown on the Testhole Location Plan) are appended. The model stratigraphy is presented in Figure 2.

Model assumptions:
• The subsurface profile considered consists of 3.1 m of fill, underlain by 5 m of sand and gravel,
which in turn is underlain by 2 m of silt and sand. The silt and sand layer is underlain by a 1.5 m
sand layer, which is underlain by clayey silt.
• The clayey silt layer encountered at a depth of approximately 11.6 m is considered to form an
impermeable boundary for the purposes of this model.
• Ground level (the top of the fill) is at 4.1 m elevation.
• The initial groundwater table prior to construction is at an average of 1 m elevation (estimated
from a measured range of 0.7 m to 1.4 m).
• The pond depth is 2 m.
• The pond is impounded horizontally by a relatively impermeable barrier (represented in the model
by the pond embankment), but the pond is not lined (i.e. there is no barrier at the bottom of the
pond).
• All materials are fully saturated.
• Horizontal hydraulic conductivity is equivalent to vertical hydraulic conductivity.
The saturated hydraulic conductivities (ksat) for the sand-gravel, silt-sand, and sand units were estimated
based on the grain size distribution curves using the Hazen Equation (Hazen, 1892) and by a study
performed by Kenney et al., 1984. Grain size distribution results used are appended to this memo. The
ksat values estimated from these methods are shown in Table 1. The ksat values for the fill and pond
embankment were estimated using engineering judgement and considering the soil descriptions provided
in the borehole logs. Table 2 presents the ksat values used in the model. A sensitivity analysis was
performed using two different values of ksat in the fill material.

The total flux was measured at the base of the pond and at the base of several of the stratigraphic units,
as well as in a closed rectangle at the base of the fill in order to obtain the overall flux both vertically and
horizontally through the fill. A vertical flux section was also taken across the whole stratigraphy in order to
observe lateral flow. Figure 3 shows the flux sections and the total flux rates obtained with a ksat of
1E-5 m/sec in the fill. The flux sections were used to obtain long-term infiltration rates, which are
presented in Table 3.

Table 3: Estimated long term Infiltration rates (10m wide and 1m long pond section).
Considering the approximate dimensions of the pond (120 m by 23 m), the infiltration rate at the base of
3 3
the pond is between about 0.25 m /min (for ksat of 1E-6 m/s in fill) and about 1.3 m /min (for a ksat of
1E-5 m/s in the fill). Table 3 shows that the long term infiltration rates are sensitive to the magnitude of
the hydraulic conductivity of the fill material. It is also anticipated that the results are sensitive to the depth
of the pond. In order to obtain a more accurate estimate of the infiltration rate below the pond, this
analysis should be re-conducted after a thorough investigation of the stratigraphy and particularly the
hydraulic conductivity of the materials below the pond has been performed. Pond depth and the hydraulic
conductivity of the pond containment system should also be confirmed.
