1) It is required to set out the profile of a cam to give the following motion to the reciprocating

follower with a flat mushroom contact face:

i. Follower to have a stroke of 20 mm during 120° of cam rotation

ii. Follower to dwell for 30° of cam rotation

iii. Follower to return to its initial position during 120° of cam rotation

iv. Follower to dwell for remaining 90° of cam rotation.

2)The minimum radius of the cam is 25 mm. The out stroke of the follower is performed with SHM
and the return stroke with equal uniform acceleration and retardation.

3)The crank of a slider crank mechanism rotates clockwise at a constant speed of 300 rpm. The crank
and the connecting rod are of lengths of 150mm and 600 mm respectively. Determine

(i) Linear velocity and acceleration of the midpoint of the connecting rod.

(ii) Angular velocity and angular acceleration of the connecting rod at a crank angle of 45oC
from IDC position.

4)Discuss in detail about any two inversion of the single slider crank mechanism.(The line diagram of
each inversion is to be drawn).

Discuss in details about

(i) Cylindrical cam with reciprocating follower

(ii) Cylindrical cam with oscillating follower with line diagram

5)An Epicyclic gear train consists of a sun wheel S, a stationary internal gear E and three identical
planet wheels P on a star shaped planet carrier C rotates at 1/5th of the speed of the sun wheel S.
The minimum number of teeth on any wheel is 16. The driving torque on the sunwheel is 100 Nm.
Determine:

i) Number of teeth on different wheels of the gear train.

ii) Torque necessary to keep the internal gear stationary.

6)Two gear wheels mesh externally and are to give a velocity ratio of 3. The teeth are of involute
form of module 6. The standard addendum is 1 module. If the pressure angle is 18o and pinion
rotates at 90 rpm. find (i) the number of teeth on each wheel, so that the interference is just avoided
(ii) the length of the path of contact and (iii) the maximum velocity of sliding between the teeth.

7)The following data relate to a pair of 20o in-volute gear in mesh module = 6mm, Number of teeth
on the pinion = 17, Number of teeth on the gear = 49, Addendum on the pinion and gear wheel =1
module. Find,

(i) The number of pairs of teeth in contact

(ii) The angle turned through by the pinion and gear wheel when one pair of teeth is in contact.
8) Draw and explain the different types of gear trains, stating one practical application for each type.

9) The led screw of a lathe has acme threads of 50mm outside diameter and 10mm pitch. The
included angle of the thread is 29o. It drives a tool carriage and exerts an axial pressure of 2500N. A
collar bearing with outside diameter 100mm and inside diameter 50mm is provided to take up the
thrust. If the lead screw rotates at 30rpm. Find the efficiency and the power required to drive the
screw. The coefficient of friction for screw threads is 0.15 and for the collar is 0.12.

10) A multi disc clutch has three discs on the driving shaft and two on the driven shaft. The OD and
ID of the contact surfaces are 240mm and 120mm respectively. Assume uniform wear and a
coefficient of friction of 0.3. find the maximum axial intensity of pressure between the discs for
transmitting 25kw at 1575rpm.

11) An open belt drive connects two parallel shafts whose centre lines are 4.8m apart. The diameter
of the larger pulley is 1.5m and that of smaller pulley is 1m. The initial tension in the belt when
stationary is 3KN. The mass of the belt is 1.5kg/m length. The coefficient of friction between the belt
and the pulley is 0.3. Take centrifugal tension into the account; calculate the power transmitted,
when the smaller pulley rotates at 400rpm.

12)The pitch of 50 mm mean diameter threaded screw of a screw jack as 12.5 mm .The coefficient of
friction between the screw and the nut is 0.13.Determine the torque required on the screw to raise
a load of 25 kN, assuming the load to rotate with the screw. Determine the ration of the torque to
raise the load to the torque required to lower the load and also the efficiency of the machine

13)Two pulleys, one 450mm diameter and the other 200 mm diameter are on parallel shaft 1.95m
apart and are connected by a crossed belt. Find the length of the belt required and the angle of
contact between the belt and each pulley. What power can be transmitted by the belt when the
larger pulley rotates at 200 rev/min ,if the maximum permissible tension in the belt is 1 kN ,and the
coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is 0.25.

14)Four-bar mechanism is subjected to fully external force. The input line AB makes 60o with the

Find the shaft torque T2 and its direction on the input link AB For static equilibrium of the
mechanism.
15) A horizontal steam engine running at 240 r.p.m. has a bore of 300mm and stroke 600mm. The
connecting rod of 1.05 m long and mass of reciprocating parts is 60 Kg. When the crank is 60o part
its inner dead centre, the steam pressure on the cover side of the piston is1.125 Mpa. While that on
the crank side is 0.125 Mpa. Neglecting the area of the piston rod.

(i) The force in the piston rod

(ii) The turning moment on the crankshaft

16) A single cylinder horizontal engine runs at 120 r.p.m. The length of stroke is 400mm. The mass of
revolving parts assumed concentrated at the crank pin in 100 Kg and mass of the reciprocating part
is 150 Kg. Determine the magnitude of the balancing mass required to be placed opposite to the
crank at the radius of 150mm which is equivalent to all the revolving and 2/3rd of the reciprocating
mass. If the crank turns 30o from the inner dead centre .Find the magnitude of the unbalanced force
due to the balancing mass.

17) A shaft of 100 mm diameter and 1 meter long is fixed at one end and carries a flywheel of mass 1
tone. Taking Young’s modulus for the shaft material as 200 GN/m2. find the natural frequency of
longitudinal and transverse vibrations.

18) Derive the equation of motions and hence the natural frequency of longitudinal free vibration of
spring mass by

(i) Equilibrium method

(ii) Energy method

(iii) Rayleigh’s method

19) Four masses m1, m2, m3 and m4 are 200 kg ,300kg,240kg and 260 kg respectively. The
corresponding radii of rotation are 0.2m, 0.15m, 0.25m and 0.3m respectively and the angles
between successive masses are 45o, 75o and 135o. Find the position and magnitude of the balance
mass required, if its radius of rotation is 0.2m.

20) A cam with 30mm as minimum diameter is rotating clockwise at a uniform speed of 1200r.p.m.
and has to give the following motion to a roller follower 10mm in diameter:

(i) Follower to complete outward stroke 25mm during 120o of cam rotation with equal uniform
acceleration and retardation

(ii) Follower to dwell for 60o of cam rotation

(iii) Follower to return to its initial position during 90o of cam rotation with equal uniform
acceleration and retardation

(iv) Follower to dwell for the remaining 90o of cam rotation.


21) In the four bar chain ABCD . Link AD is fixed and the crank AB rotates at 10 radians per seconds
clockwise. The length of the links are AB=60 mm; BC=CD=70mm; DA=120mm. When angle DAB=60o
and both B and C be on the same side of AD. Find

(i) Angular velocities (magnitude and direction) of BC and CD

(ii) Angular acceleration of BC and CD

22) A multiplate clutch has three pair of contact surface. The outer and inner radii of the contact
surface are 100mm and 50mm respectively. The maximum axial spring force is limited to 1 kN. If the
coefficient of friction is 0.35 and assuming uniform wear, find the power transmitted by the clutch at
1500r.p.m.

23) A mass of 500 kg is mounted on a support having a total stiffness of 100 kN/m and which
provides viscous damping, the damping ratio being 0.4 . The mass is constrained to move vertically
and is subjected to a vertical disturbing force of the type F cos ωt . Determine the frequency at
which resonance will occur and the maximum allowable value of F if the amplitude at resonance is to
be restricted to 5mm.
