2 Overview
2.1 Background
Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a self-interference system, in
which uplink capacity can be increased by reducing uplink interference or improving uplink
data transmission efficiency over the Uu interface.
UMTS and LTE co-site scenarios are becoming increasingly common with the fast
deployment of LTE networks. The 4-Way Receive Diversity by Inter-Band Assistance feature
implements 4-way receive diversity for UMTS networks using the antennas of LTE networks
in UMTS and LTE co-site deployment scenarios. This feature maximizes uplink capacity and
coverage performance of UMTS networks without increasing capital expenditure (CAPEX).
2.2 Introduction
The 4-Way Receive Diversity by Inter-Band Assistance feature allows a radio frequency (RF)
module to receive and transmit signals at a frequency band and receive signals at another
frequency band, as shown in Figure 2-1.
Figure 2-1 Working mechanism of the 4-Way Receive Diversity by Inter-Band Assistance
feature
The RF module supporting this feature can work in the following modes:
l Common mode
The RF module receives and transmits signals at a single frequency band.
l Inter-band assistance mode
The RF module receives and transmits signals at a frequency band and receives signals at
another frequency band.
The types of RF modules supporting the 4-Way Receive Diversity by Inter-Band Assistance
feature are listed in Table 2-1.

NOTE
Currently, only the AAU3911 can be configured with the RU3952m. For more information about the
AAU3911, see AAU3911 Hardware Description in 3900 Series Base Station Product Documentation.
For details about radio access technologies (RATs), frequency bands, RF specifications, and
engineering specifications of the types of RF modules supporting this feature, see technical
specifications of these RF module types in 3900 Series Base Station Product Documentation.
2.3 Benefits
l By replacing uplink 2-way receive diversity with uplink 4-way receive diversity on
UMTS networks, this feature increases uplink capacity by about 30% to 60% and
enhances uplink coverage by an average of 1 to 2 dB.
l This feature requires fewer external combiners or antennas, reducing deployment costs.
3 Technical Description
3.1 Introduction
When UMTS and LTE cells are deployed at the same site, the azimuths and tilts of UMTS
antennas differ from those of LTE antennas due to different networking plans. Therefore,
UMTS and LTE networks have different coverage areas, which presents a great challenge to
the use of LTE antennas for UMTS data transmission.
l The 4-Way Receive Diversity by Inter-Band Assistance feature helps flexibly configure
assistance sectors based on which 4-way receive diversity is achieved in the uplink of
UMTS networks, regardless of different antenna parameter settings on UMTS and LTE
networks. For details, see 3.3 Configuration Management for the Assistance Sector.
l This feature adaptively manages the assistance radio links (RLs) in the assistance sector
and identifies UEs in the co-coverage area. For details, see 3.4 Assistance RL
Management.
Figure 3-1 A coverage example when the NodeB and eNodeB have the same number of
sectors but different antenna parameters
When the NodeB and co-sited eNodeB have different numbers of sectors, this feature
implements 4-way receive diversity for UMTS UEs by flexibly configuring inter-band
assistance sectors. In the example presented in Figure 3-2, two UMTS cells are configured
with the same assistance sector to implement 4-way receive diversity for UMTS UEs in the
co-coverage area.
Figure 3-2 A coverage example when the NodeB and eNodeB have different numbers of
sectors
NodeB automatically stops uplink data reception on the antenna corresponding to the
assistance sector equipment and clears the assistance relationship.
One assistance sector corresponds to one RX channel and therefore occupies the resources of
a local cell in the resource group. For example, if a resource group can accommodate a
maximum of six local cells and is already configured with three local cells, a maximum of
three sets of assistance sector equipment can be added to the resource group.
A local cell can be configured with a maximum of three sets of assistance sector equipment.
In addition, the same set of assistance sector equipment can be shared between two local cells.
If the two local cells sharing the assistance sector equipment belong to the same uplink
resource group and have the same receive frequency, the assistance sector equipment occupies
the resources of only one local cell in the uplink resource group.
The configuration management for the assistance sector varies depending on the base station
type.
Assistance RL Deletion
The NodeB adaptively determines whether to delete an assistance RL based on the quality of
signals received on the assistance antenna. When the uplink SIR measured on the assistance
antenna is less than the SIR of the best cell minus the RL deletion threshold, the NodeB
deletes the assistance RL. The RL deletion threshold is set to 9 dB.
After the assistance RL is removed, the NodeB monitors the quality of uplink signals received
on the assistance antenna in real-time. If the uplink signal quality improves and meets the
requirements of the assistance RL quality threshold, the NodeB adds the assistance RL for the
purpose of 4-way receive diversity.
Revocation of 4-Way Receive Diversity for UEs with Asymmetric Coverage in the
Soft Handover Area
When an uplink RL for a UE in the soft handover area becomes out of synchronization, the
RNC adaptively determines whether the power on the assistance RL decreases. If the power
decreases, the RNC automatically revokes 4-way receive diversity for this UE, and boosts the
power through outer loop power control to ensure smooth handover.
When a UE leaves the soft handover area, the NodeB starts again to measure the quality of
signals received on the assistance antenna in the cell serving the UE. If the quality of signals
received on the assistance antenna meets the requirements of assistance RL addition, the
NodeB adaptively adds an assistance RL for the UE for the purpose of 4-way receive
diversity.
NOTE
To enable the revocation of 4-way receive diversity for UEs with asymmetric coverage in the soft
handover area, the NodeB must be able to identify the soft handover status of the UE. Therefore,
PC_FP_MULTI_RLS_IND_SWITCH under the PcSwitch (BSC6900, BSC6910) parameter must be
selected.

NOTE
When all the three features WRFD-181219 Adaptive Interference Rejection, WRFD-140225
Narrowband Interference Suppression, and WRFD-190210 4-Way Receive Diversity by Inter-Band
Assistance are enabled, long delays are introduced as antennas in the primary sector perform both
adaptive interference rejection and narrowband interference suppression, causing failures of adding
assistance RLs. In this case, the benefits of 4-Way Receive Diversity by Inter-Band Assistance cannot be
obtained. It is recommended that either WRFD-181219 Adaptive Interference Rejection or
WRFD-140225 Narrowband Interference Suppression be disabled based on external interferences on the
network.
5 Network Impact
System Capacity
By replacing uplink 2-way receive diversity with uplink 4-way receive diversity on UMTS
networks, this feature increases uplink capacity by about 30% to 60% and enhances uplink
coverage by an average of 1 to 2 dB.
Network performance
l Assistance RLs consume uplink CE resources. The increase in uplink CE resource
consumption depends on the number of assistance RLs.
l One assistance sector corresponds to one RX channel and therefore occupies the
resources of a local cell in the resource group. For example, if a resource group can
accommodate a maximum of six local cells and is already configured with three local
cells, a maximum of three sets of assistance sector equipment can be added to the
resource group.
l Assistance RLs increase the CPU load of the main control board. For example,
assistance RLs increase the CPU load by less than 10% for the WMPT board and by less
than 5% for the UMPT board.
NOTE
When the CPU usage of the main control board exceeds 70%, the NodeB performs flow control on
assistance RLs and no longer establishes new assistance RLs to avoid impact on network access. If the
original CPU usage of the main control board is high, you are advised to replace the main control board
with the UMPT and then enable this feature.
6 Engineering Guidelines
NOTE
The 4-Way Receive Diversity by Inter-Band Assistance feature improves the uplink demodulation
performance to improve the uplink throughput and coverage. The throughout gains are determined by
the uplink traffic volume in the cell. Whether the uplink service requirements are suppressed in the cell
can be observed in the scatter chart that uses VS.CellDCHUEs (BSC6900, BSC6910) as the horizontal
coordinate and VS.HSUPA.MeanChThroughput (BSC6900, BSC6910) as the vertical coordinate.
As shown in the following figure, the HSUPA single-user throughput decreases significantly as the
number of users increases, specifically, the HSUPA single-user throughput decreases by 30.7 kbit/s each
time the number of users is incremented by 10 in a cell. The uplink service requirements are high but the
air interface resources are insufficient for the cell. In this situation, enabling 4-Way Receive Diversity by
Inter-Band Assistance can greatly improve uplink throughput and increase uplink traffic.
Therefore, if the HSUPA single-user throughput decreases by more than 3 kbit/s as the number of users
increases in a cell, it can be determined that the cell has high uplink service requirements but insufficient
air interface resources.

Other Features
For details about the prerequisite features, mutually exclusive features, and mutually
exclusive features, see 4 Related Features.
Hardware
l 3900 series base stations support this feature. The uplink resource groups configured for
the 3900 series base stations must contain the WBBPf or UBBP board, and the downlink
resource groups must not contain the WBBPa board.
l The BBU3910C does not support this feature.
l The RF module must be RRU3952m or AAU3911. If AAU3911 is used, the RU must be
RU3952m.
NOTE
Run the NodeB MML command LST BASEBANDEQM to check the baseband processing units
contained in the uplink and downlink resource groups and run the NodeB MML command DSP
BRDMFRINFO to query the type of each baseband processing unit.
l Only multimode base stations support this feature. The multimode base stations can be
co-MPT multimode base stations or separate-MPT multimode base stations.
License
For details about how to activate the license, see License Management Feature Parameter
Description.
If RAN Sharing or MOCN is enabled, the licensed value is allocated among the primary and
secondary operators according to the value of "License Allocation for Multiple Operators".
Method 2: Some license control items, such as UL CE Num, can be allocated through both the
common group and private groups. In this case, the licensed value specified by the private
group is preferentially used, and the licensed value specified by the common group is used on
a first-come, first-served basis. For NodeB license allocation in multi-operator scenarios, see
License Management Feature Parameter Description.

6.3.2 Precautions
l When the value of RXFREQBANDMUTUALSW is modified, the RF module is reset,
and services carried on the RF module are interrupted. Therefore, modify this parameter
value when there are no online users in a cell.
l For separate-MPT base stations, the RXFREQBANDMUTUALSW parameter must be
set to the same value for all modes.

NOTICE
l For separate-MPT base stations, the Receive Frequency Band Mutual Aid Switch
parameter for the added RF module must be set to ON(ON) for all modes.
l When an existing site is reconstructed to support this feature, set the Receive Frequency
Band Mutual Aid Switch parameter for the LTE mode to ON(ON) if this parameter is set
to OFF(OFF). When this parameter value is modified, the RF module is reset, and
services carried on the RF module are interrupted. Therefore, modify this parameter value
when there are no online users in a cell.
NOTE
When the assistance sector equipment is added, the feature takes effect 30s after activation.

b. Area capacity gains = (Area capacity after feature deployment/Area capacity before
feature deployment - 1) x 100%
The area capacity is calculated using the following formula:
l Method 2: Compare the throughput before and after this feature is enabled by creating
two scatter diagrams based on the assumption that the user number remains the same.
The throughput after this feature is enabled is expected to be higher than that before this
feature is enabled.
Create two scatter diagrams using the value of the VS.CellDCHUEs (BSC6900,
BSC6910) counter as the horizontal coordinate and using the values of the
VS.HSUPA.MeanChThroughput.TotalBytes (BSC6900, BSC6910) and
VS.HSUPA.MeanChThroughput (BSC6900, BSC6910) counters as vertical
coordinates. Compare the throughput before and after this feature is enabled, and
determine the throughput gains.
The 4-Way Receive Diversity by Inter-Band Assistance feature improves the uplink demodulation
performance to decrease the uplink TX power of UEs to maintain the same data rate, thereby
increasing the uplink traffic volume and throughput or decreasing the RTWP, or both.
6.6 Troubleshooting
When a local cell is configured with 4-Way Receive Diversity by Inter-Band Assistance, but
the cell does not support the feature or the configured capability exceeds the capability limit,
ALM-28206 Local Cell Capability Decline is reported.
The assistance sector equipment status can be checked by running the NodeB MML command
DSP ULOCELL with the local cell ID specified.
