We, Grade 12 students of Caloocan National Science and Technology High

School are privileged to be trained in a science-oriented environment. Being in the
Science and Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand, we have been
exposed to the rudiments of science and research that prepares us to be more
competent and excellent in the said field in preparation for university-level scientific
research challenges.

This school year, our eagerness to contribute in the field of life science research
that would benefit large members of the agricultural sector of our country made us to
deal with a proposed study that would improve the quality of our leading export
bananas. Our proposed study tentatively entitled “In Vitro Evaluation of Antifungal
and Antibacterial Activity Of Pansit-Pansitan (Peperomia Pellucida) Against
Panama and Moko Disease In Banana” seeks to determine if P. pellucida has a
potential antifungal and antibacterial property against Panama and Moko disease in
banana. Our study basically will attempt to isolate and characterize a certain xanthone
glycoside, Patuloside A, and will be treated to R. solanacearum and F. oxysporum f. sp.
Cubense isolates. To isolate the Patuloside A from the plant, column chromatography
will be used and LC/ES-MS then follows for determining the structure of isolated
Patuloside A from the literature’s spectral data.

In our utmost desire to pursue with our proposed research study, we are pleading

seek for further guidance so as to refine our research methodology. You were referred
by Mr. Johnathan Sarines to us, an MS MBB graduate student at your institution; for he
