With this letter, I would like to express my interest in joining the ESMO-ESO courses on medical oncology this upcoming July in Spain. I am currently studying Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at University Technology Mara (UiTM) in Malaysia as a final year student. Today, I was informed by Dr Marfuah the Head of department for oncologist from UiTM that there will be a program held by ESMO-ESO.at first I was like what is this ESMO-ESO , until I did some research regarding it and for me the course was quite promosing as it give the opportunity for medical student to join it and we will have a better picture about Oncology field. So I am very delighted to grab this golden opportunity in order to get better insights in and out about Oncology because for me, it is a very interesting field where I can explore to new medications, technologies and surgical technique on how to treat cancer. Oncology also one of the field that can provide immeasurable reward by saving or prolonging lives. In my estimation, this program will be a lot more useful to us since the incidence of cancer patients is increasing day by day and it was quiet worrisome. The occurrence of cancer can be mostly contributed to our lifestyle. In this era there are lot of risk factors to have cancer such as overconsuming fast food which was proven to bring more harm than benefits to us even though the fast food was a lot cheaper than nutritious food. I had been in situation whereby the doctor breaking the bad new to the newly diagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma patient which was quite young about 50+ ,that he only have few months to survive and palliative care is the only hope for him. If only he came earlier the prognosis will be a lot more different. I also had seen Chinese lady aged about 40+ been admitted to the hospital Selayang with chief complaint of worsening shortness of breath for 3 days prior to admission only to be find out that that she already had right breast lump which already been rapidly growing associated with skin ulceration since the past 6 months but was not keen to seek medical attention because she was scare that she will die like her late mother which also been diagnosed with breast carcinoma. That patient is currently on palliative care as the cancer already metastize .I believed that if she seek the medical attention earlier the prognosis will be better. I think our community are not really aware that we can treat cancer if it is still in early stage. Nowadays, having cancer is not the death sentence since there are lots of modalities available to treat it. Our community will only go to seek medical attention only in advanced disease which making the prognosis poorer. I think it is part of oncologist’s job which hopefully to be my future profession to educate the public regarding this issue. So I hope that by learning everything about oncology, in future, I will be able to instill awareness regarding the cancer and treatment for it to the public. My ultimate goal is to be a surgical oncologist. I hope that by joining this program it will broaden my knowledge and it will be a blast to learn more about Oncology. I also believe that understanding about human body and diseases are quite challenging yet it is interesting when you explore it in more details. The other reasons why I am looking forward to join this course because it will teach us on how to approach cancer patients, staging, prognosis & therapy, principle of medical therapy and I believe this is very crucial as in medical profession to treat the patient as a whole not only treating the illness itself. Besides that most of the session during the course will be handled by experts. Hence, I can gain a lot of knowledge from their expertise. Other than that, I hope that I can further improve my soft skills by interacting with international students during the course. I am a fast learner, very motivated and I have proven to be able to work independently or as a part of a team. I am also good listener whereby I think it the most vital part for being a doctor to acknowledge patient’s problem. I would like to further elaborate on my motivation and competences during the upcoming course.
