This document pertains to HP and Compaq Notebook PCs with Windows 10, Windows 8, or Windows 7.

The maximum capacity of a battery changes over time. Because of this change in battery capacity, the charge level indicator in Windows might not
show 100% charged. To know the condition of your battery, use the steps in this article to test your battery and calibrate it if necessary. Calibrating
the battery resets the battery gauge to accurately display the charge level in Windows. In this document, two methods of testing and calibrating
the battery are explained. Also, a manual method for calibrating the battery is presented.

   NOTE:

Depending on which version of Windows or Diagnostics you are using, the information and graphics in this document might vary slightly.

Video overview
This video shows how to test and calibrate your notebook battery. The screens you see in Windows 10 look similar, if not identical, to the screens in

Test and calibrate the battery using HP Hardware Diagnostics (preferred

method)
HP provides diagnostic software you can use to test hardware components on your computer and confirm hardware failures. The Battery Test
checks your system to make sure the battery is functioning properly, tests the batteries, and allows you to run calibration if needed.

To download the Hardware Diagnostics for Windows, go to the HP Hardware Diagnostics  website. In the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows
section, click Download Diagnostics Windows, then follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for
Windows.

Use the following instructions to test the battery:

1. Turn on the computer.

If your computer does not start normally, press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second until the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
UEFI menu displays, then continue to the next step.

If your computer starts normally, search for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows, right-click on the app in the search results, then
select Run as administrator.

2. Click Component Tests in the main menu.

3. In the list of Component Tests, click Power.

4. In the list of Power Tests, click Battery Check or Battery.

5. On the Battery Test, click Run once.

The Battery Test begins. The Battery Test takes about two minutes. The Battery Calibration, if needed, requires 2 to 4 hours. You can cancel
at any time by pressing the Escape (Esc) key.

6. When the testing is done, review the first line on the Battery Check page that displays for the status or condition of the battery.

If your battery passed, click Main Menu or click Battery Details for more information.
If your battery failed, continue with these steps.

7. If your battery failed, check the table below for suggested actions, then write down the battery status and Failure ID. Keep the battery status
and Failure ID so you have them available if you need to contact HP Customer Support.

The information in the table is also available in the Test Logs section on the main menu.

Calibrate the battery manually

Manually calibrating the battery requires four steps: fully charge the battery, discharge or drain the battery, recharge the battery, then run the
battery test. Calibrating the battery improves the accuracy of the battery gauge software so that it more accurately displays the current level of
charge. The following instructions work with most battery types.

Step 1: Charge the battery

Use the power cord to charge the battery to a full charge.

1. Plug in the power cord.

2. Charge the battery to a full charge, 99% to 100%. To check the battery charge, mouse over the battery icon in the system tray on the
Desktop.

3. When the battery is fully charged, proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Discharge the battery

After the battery fully charges, use the extensive Hard Drive test in the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI to discharge the battery.

1. Unplug the power cord.

2. Press and hold the Power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

3. Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second until the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI
menu displays.

4. Click Component Tests in the main menu.

5. In the list of Component Tests, click Hard Drive.

   NOTE:

The purpose of the Hard Drive test is to drain or discharge the battery, not get the results of the test. The battery discharges and the
computer turns off before the test results display.

6. Click Extensive Test.

7. Click Run to start the test. Let the test continue until the battery is completely discharged and the computer shuts down.

   NOTE:

This test only discharges the battery and does not impact the hard drive.

Step 3: Recharge the battery

Recharge the battery fully before you calibrate the battery.

   NOTE:

If you run the HP Battery Check before the battery charges fully, you might get a false battery failure result.

1. Plug in the power cord to charge the battery.

2. Charge the battery to a full charge, 99% to 100%. To make sure the computer reaches a full charge, keep the computer attached to the
power cord for at least 3 hours.

   NOTE:

The battery continues to charge with the computer on or off.

3. Check the battery charge. Turn on the computer and start Windows normally, click to go to the Desktop, and then mouse over the battery
icon in the system tray to view the battery charge percentage. Make sure the battery charge percentage is 99% or 100%.

   NOTE:

If you plug in your power cord and immediately run the HP Battery Check, you might get a false failure showing the battery is bad. If
the battery is in a low-charge state (at less than 3%) you might also get a false reading.

Step 4: Run the battery test

After the battery charges, discharges, then recharges to a full charge, you can calibrate the battery.

1. Unplug the power cord.

2. Press and hold the Power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

3. Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, once every second until the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI menu
displays.

4. Click Component Tests in the main menu.

5. In the list of Component Tests, click Power.

6. In the list of Power Tests, click Battery.

7. On the Battery Test, click Run once.

The Battery Test begins.

The Battery Test takes about two minutes. The Battery Calibration, if needed, requires 2 to 4 hours. You can cancel at any time by pressing
the Escape key (Esc).
8. When the testing is done, review the first line on the Battery Check page that displays for the status or condition of the battery.

If your battery passed, click Main Menu or click Battery Details for more information.

If your battery failed, continue with these steps.

9. If your battery failed, check the table below for suggested actions, then write down the battery status and Failure ID. Keep the battery
status and Failure ID so you have them available if you need to contact HP Customer Support.

The information in the table is also available in the Test Logs section on the main menu.

Battery Warranties
In HP notebooks, standard and long-life batteries are covered under separate warranties from the notebook without exception. While the battery
warranty might match the duration of the notebook warranty, they are in fact two separate warranties.
