PRESIDENT’S REPORT
I am very grateful to the people who initiated the present student chapter and the people who
supported the process; they created a real interaction and feedback group of university students
at all levels and graduates.
I have had the honor of leading this chapter for a year learning many things and expanding my vision
in different aspects, representing a challenge to meet each objective embodied in our strategic plan
with a new team.
We start with the idea of doing new things for the chapter and our university based on what we
have already learned in previous periods.
We managed to recruit the largest number of new members in Latin America as a result of
exceptional teamwork and constant support from our advisors.
During the period, emphasis was placed on Peruvian mining at various levels, such as the informative
talks given by UNSA-MEC to schools, technical conferences with the participation of our graduates
who had belonged to the student chapter, and the topics discussed. by the group of studies which
were shared in different years.
The participation of our student chapter in the framework of PERUMIN 33 edition was an
unforgettable experience, also in this period was announced the winners of the "Design and Mining
Planning" contest second edition giving us the surprise and joy of having occupied the second place
at the national level.
Each of the activities carried out in the period 2017-2018 demanded effort and dedication from our
chapter and our advisors.
I see a great change in the processes and the mining industry, new paradigms, new challenges, I am
convinced of the potential of each student in my university, I know that they will face each change
with dedication and effort.
It has really been a privilege to be the President of the UNSA - SME student chapter, I am very
grateful for all the support provided by each person in my period, I know that our chapter and
university will continue to research, grow and improve the academic, social and environmental
level.

VICEPRESIDENT’S REPORT
My name is Samir Morales Morales, student of
the Mining Engineering career at the National
University of San Agustín.
This was the second year being board member of
the chapter of studies SME UNSA as a Vice-
president, one of my best experiences as a
student. Which gave me the opportunity to
develop my interpersonal skills, leadership,
among other tools to improve my professional
training, furthermore, gave me the possibility to
be able to help the members of my chapter and
look for possible solutions to problems related to
the academic field.
As a Vice-president i had to be the right hand of
the president support him in every activity and
lead the team when The President is not present.
We continue with Fridays Sme allowing us to
interact with professionals who provide us with
current knowledge regarding new technologies in
the field of mining. Our participation in the
Planning contest allowed us to have one more
experience

environment, which contributes to my professional training; to have more trust in me, above all, to
work as a team.
I must also thank the support of each of the members of the board of directors, for every bit of sand
they put in to be able to take charge of our chapter.
Throughout the year, we managed to strengthen our capacities as leaders, assimilating new brews
that go in and out of the mining field. We believe we are ready to take on new challenges and be
ambassadors of the new mining for the development of our region, country and why not at the Latin

MINERALS EDUCATION COALITION (MEC)
My name is Jesus Eduardo Mamani Machaca, this was the first year in which, I could develop a lot
of skills like MEC Representative.
I could search my knowledges about mining to the students from some schools.
Peru is a mining country. Mining is the source of growth, development and decentralization in our
country. It represents 60 percent of the total value of exports, mining generates 2 million direct and
indirect jobs and it contributes to the resources with over 35 billion of soles from 2007 to 2014. The
mining industry improves infrastructure, education, health, and promotes the development of other
industries.
Currently, there are so much social conflicts because of the beginning of different mining companies,
disputes arising in different parts of the country, paralyzing major projects like Conga (Cajamarca)
and Tia Maria (Arequipa), delaying thus the private investment in our country and causing a deep
sense of bewilderment and unease in the population.
Many myths and lies about mining are woven, calling it pollutant and harmful. The lack of
information about the economic and social importance of mining projects generated a negative idea
of mining. Such misinformed coupled with environmental considerations and misinformation leads
to powerful social conflicts, leaving aside the very benefits granted to our nation’s mining industry.
The lack of effective communication channels do not allow to have the necessary scope and impact
locations and appropiate to bring forward changes in mentality and information people.
It is important the articulation of an educational program as a MEC Chapter in which college
students can disseminate current practices of responsible mining, the major economic impact that
provides mining and development opportunities for the people involved in performing mining
arises.

We talked about the importance of mining in our life

WAIIME REPORT
My name is Milagros Sabrinna Tuni Román, the last period of the year I had the opportunity of being
WAIIME’s representative of the SME Student Chapter in San Agustin’s University. It’s important to
point that the quantity of women in our chapter has increased notably.
Being part of the project was an amazing experience and I personally think that every event we
realized through the year have had an impact in our professional development.
Since we know, being a woman in this industry is very challenging because we have a common goal
that is to put us at the top. I think that every girl that is part of our Chapter is capable of making it
successfully.
One of the activities in which we had the privilege to be part of was placed in the MINING
CONVENTION PERUMIN where Mrs Susana Palomino gave three scholarships to remarkable
students of different universities in our city.
We’d planned different things in our period of being the board director of the chapter and we are
sure that the new representatives are going to fulfill our expectative by making them true.
This journey is just starting, I’m very proud of the work we’ve been making and I will always be there
to support the new representative of WAAIME. I’m sure she will make a great job.
I want to finish my report by render thanks to the members that put their trust on me and for giving
me the opportunity of being part of this amazing Chapter.

Award to the winners of the WAIIME scholarship
