Pre 2017
 Move to context based questions has increased
2017
literacy requirements (not just bare skills)  Flipped
 Focus on number of credits achieved (rather  Student written internal assessment
than deeper understanding) tasks (option)
 Too many topics within courses (insurance)  Variability of externals (esp L1)
 Excellence difficult (key words vs extended  Internal moderation
abstract thinking)
 Interruptions stressful

What do you enjoy about this course?

• The flexibility - I can fit my maths assessment into weeks which I don’t have other assessments which helps
me and I can chose which Standards to do based on what I’m interested in and what will be useful in the
future. I also like that we have the opportunity to do Level 2 and challenge ourselves.
• Freedom/ Independence (overwhelming top answer)
• Going at your own pace I.e. not being 'left behind' so to speak
• I can take my time learning and I don’t feel rushed to finish something I’m not even confident with
• That you can choose when you want to assess and when you want to assess it
• That it is independent learning (driven by ourselves)
• I like how everything is set up so I know exactly how much more I have to learn for the topic
• vidoes much better than being taught in class, writing questions also much better
• Can replay the videos
• Choosing when you want to do the assessments because it is less stressful when you have things due in other
subjects you can fit maths ones in around it
• The freedom to chose what I want to do and that I can go at my own pace. I like how I can do level two maths
over two years.
• I can do what I want, when I want to do it. As long as I finish
What do you find difficult about this course?

• Staying on task

• Motivation

• Time management

• Making sure I am not taking too long to complete the work for an internal

• Keeping my E-Portfolio up to date!

• was hard to write a question at first with not much help as we havent done that before

• Having limited time for test (NOT DIFFERENT TO OLD COURSE)

What improvements would you like to make to this course?
• more teaching and less learning of our own
• Set approximate timeframes for all the standards
• Have written guides as well as the videos
• I would like the old system back
• More mixture between online and offline work
• More videos with examples
• Improve the quality of the online videos
• More encouragement for student to work through the content and sit the assessments as soon as possible.
• Maybe more teachers?
• Have a few more guidelines
• to myself: I should manage my time properly
• Have more teacher teaching, less self directed work, less decisions
• upload more videos faster please
• That all of the resources are on the website so we can do any standard or a mixture at any time.
• Maybe place deadlines on the assessments and make sure the teachers are actively involved with the
students learning, maybe run little sessions on how to approach each assessment and it would be nice to
have a session dedicated to teaching us how to use the very expensive graphics calculator, no one knows
how to fully utilise it and it would be super useful to learn the full capacity of the calculator.

No whole class teaching. Marking much harder. Students still slack off. Still hard to motivate students.
Videos not yet as good quality as we would like.

The main challenges are:

• keeping track of where each student is up to and what they are meant to be working on
• dealing with students who are not organised or self motivated and keeping them on track
• getting to know the really quiet students who never ask for help
• managing the paperwork, when you have multiple classes of students sitting a wide variety of
standards.

Find hard:
• managing the classroom with lots of needs (especially when they all assess near the same time so
making sure I've checked all their work).
• those students that are unmotivated and do nothing
• making the videos ha ha (but I do plan to get better at them... next time it will be awesome! Promise!)
• ensuring I know the content so can help them

Calm atmosphere. No whole class teaching. Talk to students when they are ready. Students learn when
they are ready. Student are getting good grades. Better than what they would have had. Videos great to
rely on.

Some students are very slow starters, but at least they haven’t failed anything.

I get to use my lesson actually spending time assisting students. I know my students far better as a result.
Students who have missed school (for genuine reasons or not) don't have to miss out. Overall I find the
vibe in the classroom more positive and more on task than in a traditional class. Most students are really
enjoying the flexibility.

Like - students working at their own pace (especially allowing those bright students to take-off and work at
their ability)
- ability for one-on-one assistance
- relationship building that this system encourages
- choice for students
- time to spend with lower end students

I think it is particularly good for our Year 11 students as they are essentially doing Level 2 Maths over 2
years, which means they are not rushing through it and have time to get a deeper understanding of the
work. I love the fact that many students are achieving success because they are allowed to sit the
assessment when they feel ready, rather than on a particular date.
It is a very different style of teaching, but I really enjoy the one on one times that I have with each student.
Classes can be very busy, but I find that there is less behaviour management needed than in the past. Most
students are focused and engaged.

When they ask for help it is a very focussed question which can be quickly addressed.

I love it, seeing both the top and bottom students in the same class and being a able to help each other.
Knowing my students better and exactly where each one is at and what they need to work on, so being
able to tailor what they are doing to them. I also love getting to talk to every student each lesson.
