Cagayan de Oro is one of the important cities in the country being regional

capital of Northern Mindanao, considered a gateway to the rest of the Mindanao

regions. As it progresses urban issues arises like flood, traffic congestion, fast growing
population, environmental issues and many more. The City planning of Cagayan de
Oro is designed in a conventional way which is short – term, driven by private sector,
existing buildings are concentrated along major roads resulting to inefficient road
extension, and is planned thinking about the building first before its people. These issues
could be resolved with city planning approaches and concepts of Joseph Bagalzette,
Baron Georges Eugene Haussmann, Frederick Law Olmsted and Patrick Geddes’s
because I believe that it can be applied in the local context in the future of Cagayan
de Oro City.

The increasing growth of population leads to a tremendous increase of vehicles

in the area without proper parking spaces resulting to traffic congestion in major and
minor roads, to help decongest traffic, Baron Haussmann’s solution is to create a wider
and tree lined boulevards which beautiful and functional planning met that could also
help reduce pollution because trees absorb carbon monoxide that is harmful to the
environment, it could also boost tourist attraction and uplift the lives living around the
area. Every time heavy downpour of rain falls it floods major roads and because
lowland is relatively flat. Joseph Bagalzette’s idea of designing underground
sewage systems could be used for building bigger drainage system and creating
sufficient flood control requirements. Strict implementation of ordinances regarding
proper waste management disposal should be applied to prevent clogging the
drainage systems that results to flooding which also leads to traffic congestion.

Frederick Law Olmsted sought to advance a feeling communitiveness which is a

sense of shared community, a sense of belongingness. Build large parks within the city
where people could escape city pressure and provide better place for people of
Cagayan.

Like Patrick Geddess I believe that an urban area is like an organism because we
need to depend on each other and work together to enhance our lives and we must
not forget that our past defines our future thus preserving cultural and historical places
in Cagayan de Oro creates an identity and would attract more tourist and
employment could create a great impact in the lives of the people living and visiting in
the area

Cagayan de Oro City is a highly urbanized area rich in people, culture, natural
resources and it is still thriving to become a more developed city in the future. The
synergistic relationship between the people, policy, built environment and sustainability
could create disaster resilient city in the future.
In my opinion the most important consideration to the design of a modern city is
its people because we are the centre of life, we have the ability to grow, to change, to
evolve and develop through time along with our technology followed by the physical,
economic, socio-cultural and political aspects that defines an urban area.
