3.1.3 Hardware Architecture

The ZXR10 8900E Series Switch applies a rack-based design and the system architecture
that the forwarding plane, the management plane and the monitoring plane are separated.
The system function is realized with the cooperation between the management plane and
the forwarding plane.
The system uses a large-capacity and high-speed serial bus plane to connect the main
control and switching board with multiple service line cards. The switching fabric is on
the main control board and 1: 1 redundant design are supported. The large-capacity
switching fabric guarantees the switching capacity required by the system wire-speed
running. The main control with high-performance CPU and large-capacity memory
guarantees the storage space required by the high-speed protocol processing and
large-table capacity. Each line card provides wire-speed packet processing ability through
ASIC and provides 10G and gigabit interfaces according to the demands on services. In
addition, the system can support synchronous Ethernet network, IEEE 1588v2 accurate
time synchronous protocol and GPS time synchronization.

The hardware architecture of ZXR10 8912E/8908E/8905E is shown in Figure 3-10.

ZXR10 8900E Hardware Description

According to the function realized by the hardware circuit, ZXR10 8900E mainly includes
the following components:
l Large-capacity and high-speed backplane
The system applies the latest passive high-speed and large-capacity backplane. It
applies 10G cables to connect line cards and MCS , which guarantees the sufficient
switching capacity required by the system running and reserves the enough bandwidth
capacity for the later upgrade. At present, the maximum backplane capacity is 3072
Gbps. It can be upgraded to 7.5 Tbps or higher value in the future.
l MCS

The MCS is the important integrated board with 1:1 redundancy. Each MCS includes
one high-capability CPU, large-capacity storage spaces, one module of switching
and communication between boards, one monitoring module and one clock module.
In addition, each MCS of 8912E/8908E/8905E includes one large-capacity switching
fabric that applies multiple planes independent design. It guarantees the switching
capability and capacity expansion capability in the future. The MCS of 8902E has no
switching fabrics. Line cards realize the back-to-back connection through high-speed
backplane. When ZXR10 8900E is working properly, two MCSs hold the active
connection. At present, the maximum switching capacity of double MCSs is 2048
Gbps.
l Service line card
Service line cards directly process packets, sending the packet to the detailed port
of destination service line cards according to the processing result. Each service line
card has its own forwarding table. Forwarding policies are locally completed, which
guarantees the wire-speed switching ability. Service line cards are various. They
can support the clock synchronization and the intellectual monitoring. According to
demands, the following service line cards can be provided:
Gigabit Ethernet service card
10G Ethernet service card
40G Ethernet service card
l Power supply module

ZXR10 8900E applies new power design. It can support the remote control function
that the main control system takes on the power. The main control system can monitor
the power through RS485, which realizes the intellectual monitoring on temperature,
overvoltage/under-voltage, power-down alarm and current limit.

l Intelligent fan frame

The ZXR10 8900E system applies the intelligent fan frame to realize speed
adjustments, stop alarms and wind speed alarms on each fan. It can adjust the fan
rotating speed according to the temperature state of each slot, which realizes the
energy saving.

3.3 Heat Dissipating System

3.3.1 Heat Dissipating System Overview
The ZXR10 8900E Series Switch applies the heat dissipation of air intake from the left.
Multiple fans are installed on the left of the cabinet (when facing the cabinet) for air intake
within the cabinet. There is an air inlet that lies at the right side of the cabinet, due to
which the heat flows from right to left. Fans inside the device absorb the air from outside
and exchanges it with the heat generated from the single board and the power board of the
device. Major heating chips adopt aluminum/cooper radiator for heat dissipation. The dust
screen is set at the inlet. It can be disassembled from the back of chassis for convenient
maintenance and cleaning. In addition, the ZXR10 8900E Series Switch can support the
separate speed adjustment on each slot fan.

The ZXR10 8900E Series Switch corresponds four fan plug-in boxes:
l ZXR10 8912E fan plug-in box
l ZXR10 8908E fan plug-in box
l ZXR10 8908E fan plug-in box
l ZXR10 8902E fan plug-in box

4.4 Board Usage Restriction

The board usage restriction as below:

1. H2XF8D cannot be used for ZXR10 8902E, nor 5~12 slot of ZXR10 8912E.
2. The bandwidth of 5~12 slot in ZXR10 8912E to switch net is 64GBps, only half
wire-speed is available now. The cross board forwarding in 5~12 slot of S1XF12A for
ZXR10 8912E is converged.
3. The consumptions of H2XF8D and E1GF24A are the largest on ZXR10 8900E, since
they are almost 140W. Please pay attention to the power consumption and heat
dissipation.
