Describe how you would use the Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing

Opportunity in your classroom:
I would use this online collaboration site as a small group activity for students to work together
as they explore their butterflies. During their small group sessions, students view their insects
through a web-based connection to the university’s electron microscope. The kids also propose
experiments, explore insect specimens at high magnification, and discuss what they see with the
scientists who join their classroom via video conferencing.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a
classroom?
• Laptops
• Smart board to demonstrate what students will be doing in their small groups
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them
may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level.):
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often
beyond their school: Collaboration will be done as students work together with
their peers as well as the scientists on the bugscope site
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original data and or
producing original products as a result of engaging in the project): Students will
work collaboratively as they collect data about their butterflies. They will then use
this data to create a presentation highlighting all they have learned about
butterflies (life cycle, types of butterflies, where they can be found)
c. Higher-order thinking: Students will be asked to describe the life cycle of a
butterfly and why the different stages are significant to the butterflies’ lifespan.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their
product: Students will work together to construct a presentation on the life cycle of
a butterfly. They will then publish their presentations on the school website for
others to see.

What Level of Technology Implementation best describes this learning activity and Why?
7. Global Collaborator: Students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich their
learning by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and globally.

How could you implement this proposed learning experience and still comply with your
district’s Internet Safety and Student Privacy policies?
I would first inform administrators and parents about what the students will be doing and how it
will support learning. I would do this to prepare them for what is happening before they
overhear their children talking about it with their friends. I would then inform administrators
and parents on how I am going to protect students’ privacy and safety. During these
conversations I will stay open and ask for parent’s opinions and suggestions. My number one rule
would be to never let individual students speak with other individuals without teacher
moderation.
