Southern Hemisphere Forest Industry Journal Online news briefs

SOUTHEM Online - Issue 252 – 30 September 2010

Hi and Hola - Welcome to this edition Southem Online. When the UK-based
The Economist puts forests on its front page and devotes a 14-page special
report to them you know things are getting serious. Entitled “The World’s
Lungs – Forests, and how to save them”, the report is previewed by a Leader
the utmost importance of saving the world’s forests. “Without a serious effort
to solve [ways to fund forests to tackle carbon emissions] the risk of climate
change will be vastly increased and the planet will lose one of its most
valuable, and most beautiful, assets. That would be a tragedy.” Quite emotive
stuff for The Economist, which is not renowned for coming over sentimental
but is famous for its dry, dry, dry approach to matters, well, economic. The
difficulties are immense but recognition by The Economist of the role forests
must play by effectively putting them into a central role in solving climate
change is great. We love forests; nice to know the suits in London are
catching on too.

Cheers and Saludos from Down Under

For decades, some university endowments, pension funds and other big
investors have put part of their money to work in the woods. They’ve bought
large tracts of timberland, viewing them as an asset class separate from
stocks, bonds and other forms of real estate, The New York Times’s Tim Gray
writes

UGA’s Center for Forest Business professionals and invited speakers will
provide you insight in the resilience of forest resources and how timberland
values have been impacted by the financial markets. The conference should
meet your timberland questions as well as provide you the information
necessary to make the most prudent timberland investment decisions
involving the process of purchasing, management and divesting a tract of
timberland.

The Center for Forest Business integrates the latest academic research and
sound financial methods to provide education and service to forest industry,
investors and landowners throughout the world.
