16. (i) 5 mL of effluent was diluted to 250 mL for BOD determination.
The Dissolved Oxygen for the blank sample = 8mg/L.
The Dissolved oxygen for the incubated sample = 5 mg/L.
Calculate the BOD of the effluent. (5)
(ii) To 100 mL of water containing sulfate, barium chloride was added to

quantitatively convert it into Bariumsulfate (Mol. Wt. of Barium sulfate is 233.3 ). The

weight of Bariumsulfate (BaSO4) obtained was 0.25 g. Express the sulfate content
in the above water sample in ppm. (5)
(iii) Which salt use is recommended, instead of salt obtained from seawater?
Name any four symptoms of thyroid deficiency? (5)
